Happy second day of spring! The weather has been back and forth between wind and rain to sunshine today. A little guarantee of sunshine are these sweet specialty narcissus!
Essentially fancy daffodils, we grow around 15-20 different types, all with ruffles, unique colourings and uncommon petal shapes. They all have their own unique bloom period so there are new types blooming every week.
Did you know that narcissus ooze a sap from their cut end when harvested? This sap is toxic to other flowers so there are a few rules around mixing them in arrangements.
First, put your freshly cut stems in their own water. Let the sap drain out for at least 3 hours before combining them with other types of flowers.
Secondly, don’t recut the stems again unless you want to repeat the first step!
We harvest ours in bud stage so that they’ll open for you once you get them home. That way you’ll get the longest vase life and they’ll travel more safely without getting damaged on the way.
We’ll have a couple bunches at the on Saturday as well as bunches of beautiful anemones in blues and purples. They are our first flowers to share with you this year!

Heads up! We’ll be stocking the on Westham Island this weekend for the first time this year.
We’ll have a few bunches of anemones, a small amount of specialty narcissus, as well as a few seeds and ranunculus corms for your garden.
We thought we might have enough flowers to attend our first this weekend but the flowers are not quite prolific enough yet. We’ll be there soon though.
Have you been out to the farmstand before? Any Qs about it?
It’s about 35 minutes from Vancouver, down a quiet country lane, set between two big cedar trees. At the moment it’s open 10:00-3:00 on Saturdays only but is open daily in the main growing season.
The farmstand is stocked full of certified organic veggies all grown here at the farm by . This month there are beets, carrots, potatoes, several types of greens, parsnips, leeks, cabbage, radishes, shallots and more.
Visit the Reifel Bird Sanctuary and go for a walk or stop in at another neighbourhood farmstand while you’re here. We have some wonderful views of Vancouver Island, Mount Baker and the local mountains.
I think I’ve just appointed myself head for the Westham Island Tourism Board with all this! Just saying it’s a cute spot and worth a little day trip. Especially if you take home some flowers. 😉

Ready to get in the garden? Official spring is only a week away and since the time change this weekend the daylight hours do feel longer.
It’s the perfect time to get some spring bloomers started so they can enjoy the cooler temperatures before the summer kicks in.
We have sweet pea seeds and ranunculus corms for you to get in the soil and start growing now and dahlia tubers that can be ordered for pick up next month.
Pictured are some scabiosa seedlings that have just germinated, ranunculus corms sprouted and about to be planted, a narcissus in bud about to bloom and young sweet pea plants just after being transplanted.
There’s lots of good green growing things all over the farm at the moment. There’s a lot of beauty right around the corner!

Look who’s here! Our very first flower to bloom of 2025. In a few weeks we’ll have enough flowers to share, but this one is coming home with me.
Anemones and narcissus are usually in a race to be first and this year the anemones take the prize by a long shot.
We’re going into our ninth growing season this year and it feels like it’s all gone by so fast. I can’t wait to see what this year brings!

Is 21 zinnia varieties too many? 🙈Asking for a friend…
But really, it’s been deeeep zinnia crop planning today. I’m trying to be strict and not grow too many kinds as it gets complicated keeping them all straight with all the types and successions we sow. But it’s so hard to say no!
I love all the forms and colours they come in and I know our customers do too. But my spreadsheet is getting a bit out of hand. I have a few absolutely must-grows every year and am trying to let a few go to simplify. This Zinderella Peach is on the cutting block but maybe we should we grow it for seedling sales?

We’ve just started waking up our outdoor ranunculus for late spring blooms. Folks have been asking for years and we finally have some extra corms that we grew right here on our farm to share with you.
Check out the growing guide for all the details on how to start and grow these fabulous spring blooms. They need a little more attention than chucking some seeds at the soil, but it’s well worth the effort.
Ranunculus are long lasting flowers with fluffy layers of petals. They prefer the cool temperatures of late winter and early spring to grow and will die back by late June when it really warms up.
Not up for growing your own? Our first ones should be blooming in less than two months!

We’re now taking orders for 2025 DIY bulk buckets! Here’s one of the few beautiful custom colour palette orders that I actually remembered to take a photo of this past year.
We harvest the flowers, obsess and fine tune the contents of the buckets and then before we know it they’re picked up and off living their best life at someone’s special event. Often before I get a minute to snap a decent photo.
I love knowing that the flowers we’ve tended for months are out there making someone’s day more beautiful, whether it’s an ordinary day or a special once-in-a-lifetime kind of day. And then there’s all that beauty and love that these flowers have been silent witness to as well.
It’s all pretty magical!
Anyways, if you or someone you know is getting hitched, throwing a special party, or just needs an excuse to buy flowers to play with for a get together, check out our DIY flower buckets!
I’ll be (over)sharing some pics from this year and years past for the next little bit. Sorry/not sorry!

Happy Solstice! We’ve now passed the shortest day of the year, every day will get longer and brighter for the next six months.
The farm is just now orbiting into a much slower and quieter time. We’ve spent the last several weeks tackling lots of fall tasks and now that they’re complete the whole team is taking some well earned time off.
There are lots of spring blooming plants sinking their roots in and growing slowly. As the days get longer and longer they’ll grow faster and faster until we’re harvesting piles of buckets of flowers again.
Us humans are also sinking our roots in for the coming year: resting, planning, organizing and dreaming for a floriferous 2025.

We made ya some wreaths!
We made the bases from ninebark branches on the farm, sourced some greenery and berries from both off farm and around the farm’s hedgerows and gardens, rustled through some dried flower stashes, and gleaned some interesting crunchy botanical bits from the frosted flower field, and then topped them off with ribbon.
They’re a mix of big full wreaths, some smaller ones, as well as some partials and half moon ones like this. Find them and the very last of the eucalyptus at the this weekend from 10:00-3:00 both days.
Come grab some seasonal magic for your doorstep!

These blooms are not in season! We’ll be waiting almost 6 more months till the peonies bloom again. But if you want to make sure you don’t miss em, (they’ll be here for a good time, not a long time) you can join our Peony Club!
It’s our new CSA (community supported agriculture) program. We’re shaking things up a bit for 2025 and are only offering ONE CSA program next year. I’m telling you all this now because we’ve just launched sign ups for the Peony Club. I figure it’ll make an excellent treat for a flower lover or for you if you are gaga for peonies yourself.
It’ll get ya a big bunch of luscious blooms for three weeks in a row, starting sometime in May when Mother Nature decides its go time for this bodacious crop.
Can you wait till May? It’s a practice in patience!

Saturday is our last market of the year!
We’ll have heirloom chrysanthemums, eucalyptus, a few other blooms and our natural dye flowers.
Thank you for coming out rain or shine to support us week after week. It’s been a whirlwind of a season and we’re looking forward to a shift in pace for a few months.
There’s still a few key tasks to wrap up in the next few weeks at the farm and into the new year but the flower harvest is pretty much finished for the year.
See you at Riley Park market on Saturday or in the spring!
