Cozy snow days with date squares and Bready White (2.0, we won’t ask about 1.0, k thanks byeee). Grateful to the snow for the forced rest, though animals still need care, food, and water. Everyone is cozy, warm, dry, and happy despite the chilly weather!

Spring is coming and so is your desire to garden! Grow your own food this year by starting with these veggies that are SO EASY to grow from seed!

Pumpkins and winter squash - need space and a lot of good manure 💩 and they will reward you with heaps of fruit in the early fall. Bonus is many varieties of winter squash keep for MONTHS if you store them in a cool dry place! My favourites are galeux d’eyesines, Boston marrow, and red kuri. Bonus is they also look fantastic as fall decor!

Kale - literally throw some seed at the ground, water it once, and they’ll sprout. Plus, if you let your kale go to flower and seed, you’ll never not have kale again! Cover with a sheet or mesh cloth to protect from aphids and cabbage moth if it’s getting bad. Fav varieties are lacitano and red Russian.

Cucumbers and zucchini - also super easy to grow and productive! Sow indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost or direct sow seed once all the threat of frost is gone (that’s mid May for us in Zone 8b) and watch as these plants literally grow inches every day. 6-8 weeks later you’ll be up to your neck in cucumber and zucchini! You can grow cucumbers vertically to save space in the garden, too! Fav varieties are long white of Palermo and Muncher.

Garlic - the most LOW MAINTENANCE plant ever. Dump a whole bunch of manure and compost, plant garlic cloves in the fall (Oct-Nov is best), put a layer of leaf or straw mulch on top and forget about them entirely until May. Water only if it’s dry and stop watering about 2-4 weeks before harvest in July. So much better than store bought and SO EASY!

Peas - chuck seeds in the ground in March (a little bit before the last frost) and a few weeks later you’ll have your perfect garden snack! Peas love cool temps, can be grown in containers, have beautiful flowers and are super tasty! My favourite varieties are any of the sugar snap peas!

Beets and turnips - Again just chuck seeds in the ground, water once, and you’ll get delicious sweet beets and purple top turnips a few weeks later! We sow seeds directly in the garden in April and harvest late June and into July! Both the roots and the tops are edible! Fav varieties are Detroit golden beets and purple top turnips!

Lettuce - so many varieties, so much fresh flavour and so easy to grow. Start indoors 4 weeks before last frost or direct sow in late March early April. Lettuce prefers cooler temps and can be harvested slowly leaf by leaf or by removing the whole head. Washed lettuce directly from your garden stays good for WEEKS in the fridge and can easily be grown in containers on a patio! Fav varieties are Merveille de quatre saisons and Great Lakes!

Happy gardening!

Our girls have slowed wayyyyyy down this winter. Age and less daylight have done a number, so between our wonderful subscription customers and our family, we haven’t had any to spare for the farm stand.

Hopefully as the days gloriously get longer and with our planned flock refresh to move towards a more heritage breed heavy flock, we’ll have more eggs to offer this spring on the farm stand!

Because, who doesn’t love eggs! They are one of the most perfect foods. Fat, protein and wonderful nutrients like choline and vitamin D, who could ask for more?? This breakfast was jammy eggs mashed with cottage cheese, served on toasted sourdough with avocado and (of course) sriracha. Delicious, nutritious, and protein packed!

Soaking sweet peas and making sourdough starter with flour…the things that brighten the depths of January grey. Only 5-6 months before these flowers grace our lives with beauty and that perfectly sweet old fashioned scent 🌺 🍞

Looking for tips about keeping ducks. Specifically breeds that are dual purpose such as Pekin, Silver Appleyard or Cayuga (not Muscovies). Also any good breeders or reputable places to purchase ducklings or off-heat ducks on Vancouver Island.

Also if anyone has any experience keeping and raising peafowl……🦚

Merry Christmas, from our family to yours! Hope your day is full of rest and joy! We have had a wonderfully busy year and are taking time to rest and celebrate with family. Farm sales are closed until the new year. But mamma got an automatic egg washing machine for Christmas so hopefully the hens pick up production in the New Year! 🎄 🐓 🥚

Last night was a true celebration. A celebration of our cows and the nourishment they did and will provide to our whole family. A celebration of family and the concert that was delivery, preparation, cooking, and serving this wonderful brisket and sausage from our cows. A celebration of the joy animals can bring to us while alive, and after. What a privilege to be able to provide for this celebration.

All our beef is currently spoken for, but if we have any availability pop up we’ll let ya’ll know. ✌🏼

Quince butter! Recipe adapted from an online blog called “Autumn Makes and Does”. Never tried quince? Most people haven’t and it is an INCREDIBLE fruit. Like guava, passionfruit, lemon, honey, and pears had a beautiful baby. It’s so good!

3-5lbs of quince (I used 5 med/large quince)
2 cups white sugar (up to 3 cups depending on how sweet you like your fruit)
Juice of 1 large and juicy lemon
Water

Core and chop quince into 1-2” pieces (peeling is not necessary). Add to a pot with the rest of the ingredients and enough water to cover the quince halfway up. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the quince are soft and the mixture turns from yellow to a guava Tropicana sunset glowing orange/pink colour (about 45-60 mins). Puree with a plunge blender, in a normal blender, or in a food processor. I’m unsure about water bath canning safety for this recipe so I froze mine in jars (if you freeze in glass jars it is important to use STRAIGHT SIDED mason jars as jars with shoulders may break).

Absolutely delicious on toast, granola, yogurt, served with pork or chicken, or simply off a spoon at 12AM (I won’t tell anyone 😉).

Recipe made about 4.5 cups of quince butter.

And just like that, we have waterfront property again. Over the weekend the west coast was inundated with rain. Some places experienced severe flooding, flash flooding, landslides, power outages, and road washouts, so we feel very grateful that our farm has been spared from the external chaos. Perhaps the universe thinks we have enough internal chaos going on and thought it best not to mess with us. The start of typical fall weather felt really abrupt, with 20° weather just one week ago turning to 12° weather with chilly overnights this week. The sun is peeking out today, though, and still feels a warm on our backs. Projects are changing from outdoors to indoors. Though the garden needs a fair bit of tidying and mulching to prep for next spring. Bulbs need planting. Christmas turkeys, cows, and layer hens need daily tending. But it feels like we can breathe, again, ever so slightly, and the rain gives us an excuse to slow down. 🍁 🌧️

Plant your garlic on the full moon in October for the best harvest 🌕

Impromptu tomato tasting this Thanksgiving holiday! I needed to know which varieties to grow again next year so I polled my family. The big winners? For paste, most people preferred san marzano and speckled Roman. For cherry tomatoes, the big winner was snowhite! Their sweet flavour just couldn’t be beat.
