Hunting Course Questions:

Is this course mandatory for hunting?
A valid alberta conservation and hunting education license is required for all new hunters in Alberta. We offer this live class along with the online exams and onsite licensing to all passing participants.

How old do you need to be to take this course?
-10+ years old
-10 year olds can hunt birds in Alberta. At 12 years old, they are able to apply for draws and hunt all legal animals

What does the course include?
-Full instruction on hunting and conservation in Alberta
-Manual
-Exam for license

Are dates, times and location flexible?
-Absolutely! Email us to set up a private group or location that will work for everyone.

Do you do courses for homeschoolers?
-Yes. For homeschoolers, we accommodate different group sizes and times. We also adapt the course for these accommodations and price will be adjusted for what is being offered.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

Melissa Uhlman | Kitchen Witchery Instructor | Hide Tanning Apprentice |

I always felt I was a soul born out of time; that I somehow was not meant to be in this world, at the time I found myself in it. I was born and raised in central Alberta, in an oilfield family. I had a wonderful childhood, with all the freedoms a rural small-town existence afforded me, but I longed for simpler times. Times when the work was physically hard but emotionally and productively rewarding. A time when people had a closer connection to the food they raised, cooked and ate. A time when we had more connection to the ecosystem and our place in it. I longed for a life where the solutions to our problems came from nature, and not the store.

I felt there was a disconnect between people and their environment, which led to a disconnect between the people themselves. So, I lived my life, quietly feeling there was a better way, despite all admonishment that I was not being practical or realistic, and was determined to find a way back to that better way for me, and my children.

It did not happen overnight, and certainly not all at once, and I am most definitely not finished growing and learning, but I have managed to build a life that works for me. A life that allows me to place value in the skills and practices that fulfill me. I live a life that allows me to feel connected to the environment and the people around me. I am a fierce believer that knowledge is most powerful when shared and I am excited to share the knowledge I have gained in my quest for my own authentic existence.

Giulia has been a certified hunting and fishing educational instructor since 2006, specializing in the conservation and education aspect of hunting in Alberta.

Her passion for hunting has been passed down to her through her family and has been shared with her husband and their two young daughters. Her desire to learn excelled her into wanting to teach and share her knowledge about her outdoor enthusiasm with others.

She strongly believes in sustainable living where she is also passionate about land to table food, harvesting her own meat to nourish her family. Giulia hunts with a rifle as well as bow and loves to inspire people of all ages to try and hunt with both.

Certified Conservation and Hunting Education (government required licensing) to get you started in Hunting in Alberta.

Live lambing clinics to guide you with hands on experience in how to successfully navigate lambing season and all the unexpected challenges that can arise.

Field to Freezer clinics showing you the basics of humane slaughter and basic butchering of grown out lambs with a focus on whole animal use, following on farm slaughter legislation.

Tallow Rendering and soap making teaching you the many ways to safely render tallow to be used in a variety of ways such as cooking, soap, candles, balms and more.

Traditional Hide tanning workshops that guide you in how to skin, prep and tan soft leather hides from any animal and produce a variety of materials such as hair on furs and rugs, leather and rawhide.

Moccasin making classes from a Metis maker will give you the skills to work with tanned leathers and furs in making moccasins and other wearable items.

Wildfibre Shearing Day Clinics to learn how to shear your flock yourself with multiple techniques and tools, with a focus on keeping the fleeces and guiding you on how to process raw wool and even felt some dryer balls, setting you ahead in making the most from your Fibre producing animals.

Beginner Carpentry & woodworking classes with a Metis female instructor that builds your confidence with using a vast array of tools and proper techniques to get you going on planning and building your own functional pieces from decorative items, furniture and even high efficiency hay feeders.

In addition, we also offer special guest instructors for classes such as blacksmithing to round out skills like custom tool and knife making and even axe making with many more exciting opportunities coming in 2024.

The knowledge and skills you gain from these classes are second only to the confidence you build. Our instructors come from many diverse backgrounds and are passionate in empowering you through sharing skills, knowledge and building community.

Traditional tanning experiences range from a 3 hour introduction to full weekend instructional workshops. All experiences encourage participants to get hands on with tools and hides.

You might have already seen her frequently over at Wildfibre Tannery and we are so excited to finally announce that Melissa Uhlman will be teaching natural soap making classes this fall. Melissa is nothing short of a Kitchen Witchery master. Her knowledge is ever evolving on best practices to use ingredients most already have on hand and find uses for the fats that are too often tossed aside, without fully understanding their valuable benefits.

Traumatized women have the potential to become the most powerful people in this world.

The most ignorant members of society call this type of woman “damaged.” But she is the most powerful type of woman there is.

What they forget is that survivors have the most dangerous advantage of all: resilience.

When you try and you try but you can never bring a woman down, you’ll know there is no going back.

Don’t fool yourself. You could never defeat her. You never will.

This is the woman who will always rise from the dead; Lady Lazarus, after going through hell and back.

This is the woman who has burned her feet in the flames time and time again and always lives to tell another tale – even if she has to crawl back to life. . . .

When someone tells her, “You can’t do it,” she says, “Watch me.”

She is fiery light birthed out of wintery darkness. Brought into the underworld by Hades, Persephone brings forth spring and rebirth when she reemerges finally from the cold.

She owns her shadows and seamlessly weaves them into the fabric of her freedom, creativity, imagination and independence. . . .

She lived all of her nightmares in high definition. She was given every reason to give up, handed every justification to never believe in herself or anyone.

But there is raw magic in the ways in which she cultivates a faith in herself, to manifest the dreams her soul was meant to bring forth.

Despite it all, she still conquers.

She still survives and thrives.

The “damaged” woman is capable of immense manifestation not just in spite of, but because of the traumas she has gone through.

There is no one more motivated than a woman who has constantly been told what she cannot do or who she cannot be throughout her lifetime.

There is no one more determined to succeed than someone who has nothing left to lose.

The “damaged” woman doesn’t sign up for the hardships of her journey – but she plays the hell out of the cards she’s been dealt.

The “damaged” woman is not damaged at all – she is wounded, and abundance and change.

She possesses the power to use her wounds for the greater good and her highest good.

She builds her own success and becomes her own rugged hero; tends to her own scraped knees.
She uses every stone thrown at her to build the foundation for her empire.

Brick by brick she builds – and despite every attempt to tear her walls down, she rescues herself again and again.

Despite it all, this type of survivor may still face hatred, envy, greed from those around her. . . .

As a result, she becomes the survivor of countless witch hunts, the target of many persecutors. Yet when they try to burn her at the stake, she does what comes naturally: she resurrects herself. . . .

Now when she creates, she creates new worlds and transforms and manifests on a level that cannot be recreated by someone who never had to struggle to survive.

When you hear the voice of a powerful survivor and the will of a warrior – there is nothing you can do but to stop and listen.

She is the voice of a million lifetimes lived.

She is the voice of the hopeless and the powerless when the fire is brought back to their eyes. She is the harbinger of the justice that the voiceless have longed to hear and feel and touch.

Regardless of how much you try and how it may seem, you can never truly bring a survivor like this to her knees; she already knows the value her scars bring.

She knows how to fill the cracks between her wounds with gold.

She knows how to transform each bitter word cast upon her into an iron-clad will that will set her and other caged birds free.

You can’t ever defeat a “damaged” woman, because she knows exactly how to save herself.”

Since starting Wildfibre Organic Tannery TM, I have overcome adversity and discrimination that I never thought would be so prevalent in the modern world we are in. Where we are told we can achieve anything we work hard for. In a world that preaches women's rights, gender equality and supportive memes are the icons of trendy inspiration.

In 2020, I took a leap to stand on my own and separate in marriage at the peak of a global pandemic and uncertainty. I would find many opportunities to bring my passions to life and share freely without shame, but each would come at a cost that broke me a little more each time...
