Bonsai Creative

Bonsai Creative We're a husband-wife team of wedding cinematographers based in Waterloo, Ontario. Weddings are emotional days. Possibly the most emotional day you'll have.

We love not only capturing all the little details you've put so much time into planning, but also the emotions and memories of your day that you will cherish forever. Laughter, tears, butterflies, and so much love fill your time. In the hustle and bustle of such an incredible time, we forget so many details. This is why we do what we do. Not only do we aim to capture the details and moments of your day through video, but also all the feels that make your day so memorable.

As you dive into wedding planning, it’s easy to get swept up in the endless inspiration flooding your feed. Before you know it, you might find yourself making decisions based on what you’re told a wedding “should” look like instead of what truly resonates with you and your partner.

If there’s one piece of advice we can share to help you plan a truly authentic wedding, it’s this... Throughout your planning, ask yourself, “Does this feel like us?”

Here’s the truth... there are no rules. No right or wrong choices. No traditions you have to follow. The most meaningful weddings are the ones that reflect you, your personalities, your love story, your values.

So as you choose everything from your vows to your venue, your guest list to your colour palette, take a moment to pause and ask:
💛 Does this bring us joy?
💛 Does this feel like us?

If the answer is yes, go for it. If not, give yourself permission to let it go.

Your wedding is about celebrating your love, in a way that feels right for you. And that’s what will make it truly unforgettable. ✨

What I love about weddings…

I’m going to be real for a second, and I’m often hesitant to share this opinion because I know my industry, and it feels a little hypocritical.

I hate how consumeristic weddings are. Yes, I heard myself… that’s quite a thing to say for someone who charges five grand for their wedding films. The thing is, I love weddings for the rich commitment they celebrate. I love weddings because they bring together families and friends. I love weddings for hosting loved ones and showing your personality through your unique event. I love weddings for the party, the fun, the dancing. I love weddings for the words shared. I love weddings for being the milestone in relationships you can look back on and celebrate the years as they pass.

But man, the things we “need” to do for a wedding to be a “good wedding” - I hate that crap. If you hire us or spend time around me when planning your wedding, you’ll hear me say, “If you don’t want to do it- then don’t!”

But also, sometimes, even if you want to do the thing, I’ll ask, “Is it wise?” “Is it going to matter in fifty years?” “Are you even going to like that trend next year?”

I don’t believe in going into debt over a wedding or buying or doing things to impress people who may not even be a part of your inner circle. Plan a day that suits you and your partner! You’re the two planning this life together and setting the precedent for your marriage ahead.

So I guess that went from why we love weddings to what we hate about them? Chime in: what do you love and hate about weddings? No shame on people who do things differently - that’s the beauty of individuality - you pick what works for you!!

Hiii! Just a quick life update from your friendly neighbourhood filmmakers...

We have moved and settled into our new home since we got it a week before Christmas. We stayed in Elmira, in a cute little century home with a big backyard right near the hustle and bustle of downtown. LOL. I often watch horses and buggies drive past our home, and it is a quiiiiiet street.

We’re officially in our off-season, where we like to focus and figure out our goals for the coming year (and years because we book so far in advance). Jon has been taking on a handful of corporate and commercial jobs and loving that while I (Meg) have been planning my gardens. That’s work, right? 🌱 We’re both prioritizing our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health in new ways, which feels friggen good.

Our three kids are spicy and energetic, as always. Our youngest, Cosmo, recently sang the classic song this way:
“Eenie, meenie, minie, moe. Cut a tiger’s foot so many times. Cut cut cut.”

And Chester recently asked Nasa while working on an art project: “What’s your favourite object?”
Nasa: “you.”

Kids, man, they’re wack.

Once again, we’re filled with gratitude at this charmed life we’re so fortunate to live.

Who you think is editing your film vs who is really editing your film… 😜

We do our best work when we’re comfy & in our best creative element 😂

The end results are always stunning (if we do say so ourselves), our editing state on the other hand… well that’s a different story lol

On your wedding day, you want to be surrounded by those who want the best for you, and are going to support you and your significant other as your embark on your journey together... the same should go for your vendors!

After all, you spend a lot of the day surrounded by your videographer and photographer. We are there to capture your memories, but also to hype you up, support you, and celebrate along side you as you step into your new chapter of life.

If you are currently in your wedding planning stage, we encourage you to book the vendors that jive with you & your style, not just creatively but personality wise too.

They should be just as invested in the vision of your day as you are!

That’s one of the reasons we love working alongside JD Photography. Not only do our dynamics compliment each other in many ways, but we always have so much fun creating alongside them too.

We have some availability left for 2025 & offer savings to couples who book us alongside JD Photgraphy. Send us a dm to discuss our availability!

Hi, I'm Meg, & sometimes I get SO into the shot, I don't realize I'm IN the shot 😜

Really good days make really good wedding films.
When you’re planning your wedding, think about how you want the day to flow. You want to be able to be fully present, enjoying the celebration of your relationship- not worrying about the details of the day.

Hire or designate someone you trust to handle these details on the day of, allowing you to completely relinquish the management role, and be present enjoying the day you’ve worked so hard to plan.

On your wedding day of course our main goal is to capture the beauty of your day, but we’re also here to help you!

Whatever we can do to help you relax, have fun, and be present, we’ve got you. Sometimes this means we’ll get in a shot or two 😉

Writing your own vows can feel like a lot of pressure... how do you express all your love for your partner in a matter of words?! If you’re looking for some vow writing tips, keep reading...

# 1 – start by listing out things you love about your partner. Physically, spiritually, emotionally, anything and everything counts.

# 2 – next, think about what marriage means to you. is there a piece of scripture, advice, or qualities of a relationship that frame it for you? write it all down.

# 3 – what makes you sure about marrying your partner? was there a moment that you knew they were the one? describe it in detail

# 4 – lastly, what kind of spouse do you desire to be to your partner? what promises or commitments do you want to make? in 50 years, what promises do you hope to still be making and keeping? this can help you have perspective for the weight of this commitment

# 5 – once you’ve got all these things written down, its time to format. have a conversation about how formal or casually structured you want them to be. use phrases and language that are familiar and natural to you, so they feel like your words.

We find that stories, details, and personal elements are where the meaning is found, while also balancing it with the promises you’re committed to keeping for your lifetime together.

Married couples, what are some things that you found helped you when you were writing your vows to your partner? Share in the comments!

Little October recap… a few days late. 🙈

Wrapped up our final wedding of the season, shot a handful of glorious engagement sessions, watched a bunch of sunrises and sunsets, kept our house pristine to sell it, many forest and neighbourhood walls with the kids, ate all the cozy soups, snuggled babies, edited while watching live play D&D, and snuggled the kids a load.

This season has been way more full than anticipated with the sale of our house and buying a new one. We’re pretty wiped, to be honest, but we’re plugging away and celebrating every win along the way.

About us

We specialize in emotional, vulnerable, and raw highlight films for couples who are crazy about each other. No two films are the same, since we are eager to get to know our clients and tell their love story. We are always striving to create films that break through the surface beauty of a wedding day to show the personalities and histories of each couple. Offering full day documentary capture of weddings as well as proposals and engagements, we'd love to tell your story!

If you’re wondering about us, and not just what we do, we’re a husband-wife pair who really love to work together. We’re a mix of sensitive and particular, quirky and focused, and adventurous and careful. We live in small-town Elmira, Ontario and will happily travel throughout Canada for the right project.
