Good morning friends,
Six and a half years ago I purchased a logo from Etsy and announced that I was opening a small shop making wreaths. What began as a hobby, quickly turned into a part-time job. Many nights I spent at my kitchen counter designing and creating, burning my fingers on hot glue and packaging faux floral items to ship all over North America. I clearly remember when I received my first order, I had been almost asleep when my phone went “Ka-Ching”. I jumped out of bed, screaming. I couldn’t sleep that night, I was SO thrilled.

In 2018, my business peaked. I was packaging up multiple orders a day while caring for my baby girl and her three older brothers. We moved and I finally had a room to myself where I could create to my heart’s content. My floral backdrops were a huge hit and were featured in magazines, and when Etsy posted a picture of one on an instagram post, it got the most likes of the year for them. I was on top of the world.

2020 rolled around, we had a little boy in February and then … Covid. I was thrust into homeschooling while caring for 5 kids under 8. I had to close my business for some months, and when I reopened, another Canadian shop had started selling backdrops similar to mine with much success. This was a disappointment but I was determined to continue. However, it became more and more clear that what had once been a hobby became a huge stress in my life. I tried to be a good mother, homemaker, designer, creator, and social media queen. Yes, I could do it all, but I wasn’t doing any of them well.

With inflation and skyrocketing shipping prices, this past year I wasn’t able to make the sales I once was. I had a huge stock of wreaths, but nowhere to ship them. All this work, with a loss? I couldn’t see how it was worth it.
