IMBOLC is an ancient festival (February 2nd) to CELEBRATE THE SEED and Nature as they considered it to be unconditionally sacred, an expression or manifestation of deity and divinity. Druids do not worship nature; they give reverence to deity that is expressed within nature. It is the time of Blessing of the seeds and consecration of agricultural tools. It is the festival of the Maiden, for from this day to March 21st, it is her season to prepare for growth and renewal. Brighid’s snake emerges from the womb of the Earth Mother to test the weather, (the origin of Ground Hog Day), and in many places the first Crocus flowers began to spring forth from the frozen earth. Another traditional symbol of Imbolc is the plough. Pieces of cheese and bread are left by the plough and in the newly turned furrows as offerings to the nature spirits. It is considered taboo to cut or pic plants during this time. We can attempt to try to understand this power, this energy that we feel and see all around us, or we can simply accept that it is beyond our full comprehension whilst acknowledging its power over our lives, that it is deity, that it is sacred. To a Druid, the term ‘supernatural’ has no meaning; nothing can be above Nature. Another view would be that the universe had no beginning, it is a continuing, ever changing wonder that we can’t hope to fully comprehend. Within our society it has become normal to think of nature as something linked to the countryside, or that which might be observed outside of ourselves other than that which is beyond the physical. Perhaps we can learn from their knowledge. Food for thought

Todays Veggie Seed Spotlight:
Pea – ‘Blue Pod Capucijners’

https://seedsofimbolc.ca/product/blue-pod-capucijners-pea/

The Blue-podded Capucijner (cap-ou-SIGH-nah) is a hardy pea first grown by the Franciscan Capuchin monks in Holland and Germany during the early 1600s, who ate it as standard fare in soups, stews and casseroles.
Beautiful, bi-colour lilac/pink and wine-red/purple blooms, fading to blue as they wilt. Pods are deep inky purple/blue.
Best used to make delicious, full-bodied soups.
An edible-podded sugar pea by harvesting before peas have developed.Great long term storage food.
Beautiful heirloom pea that is pretty enough to grow as an ornamental for the edible gardening fans, even if you don’t like peas.
The dark coloured pods really stand out against the background of the bright green leaves making them very easy to pick. It is a good choice for children and the elderly.
Soaring, vining plants are smothered in the most striking dark purple pea pods.
A rich eggplant colour, these shelling peas are as delicious as they are beautiful; pick early for best flavour.
The vining stems make a wonderful and unexpected addition to summer flower arrangements and are a real conversation starter.
A must grow heirloom.
Harvest when pods are brightly coloured, taking care when handling delicate vines. Expect a vase life of 5-7 days if using in floral work.

It is best used by picking the pods when full of large olive -green to brown seed which make delicious, full-bodied soups. It can also be grown as an edible-podded sugar pea by harvesting before peas have developed.

Apparently, there is no food more typically Dutch, that you can grow in your garden, than the purple podded capucijner pea. When cooked they stay whole, make their own rich gravy, and have a distinctive pea taste. Some people believe some strains of this pea came from the Mennonites in Pennsylvania, as the seeds were likely brought over with the early German settlers by way of Holland. It seems all roads lead back to Holland and the Capuchin Monks for the origin of this delightful vegetable.

Tall vines grow 5-6’ which require support. Plant 1″ deep, sprinkle them in a trench (they don’t seem to mind company) but don’t overcrowd for air circulation 70-100 days

Todays Flower Seed spotlight:
Nicotiana – Flowering To***co ‘Grandiflora’
https://seedsofimbolc.ca/product/flowering-to***co-grandiflora/

Nicotiana alata One of the most fragrant flowers!
This stunning plant is a must-have for every gardener and is ideal for the mixed border.
Flowering for many months, it fills the air with a sweet, jasmine-like scent. Showy white flowers open during the cool of the evening with oblong shaped leaves and an erect branching form. Hummingbird moth magnet!
aka Jasmine to***co produces tall, graceful stems of pale, nodding flowers with starry faces.
Its soft, sweet perfume peaks at dusk on warm nights; their pale, luminous flowers often open in the evening, so tuck plants near a window to get their Jasmine-like perfume indoors.

Recommended variety by Erin at Floret.
The genus Nicotiana consists of more than 60 species, including the plant notorious for producing smoking to***co.
Nicotianas are named after Jean Nicot, a 16th century Ambassador who is credited with introducing to***co to the French court, where it gained popularity in the form of medicinal s***f.
Ornamental Nicotianas aren't grown for this usage, but for their uniquely beautiful flowers, wonderful fragrance, and graceful appearance in the garden.
They are also deer-resistant!
Members of the Solanaceae family: nightshades, their relatives include tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants.

Tomato – ‘Green Giant’

A Green-when-ripe tomato you say??

Try it – you’ll love it!
Gorgeous, large emerald-green fruit is over a pound in weight, uniform, very smooth and blemish-free.
Colour turns slightly lighter green, slightly yellow when ripe.
Very few seeds; outstanding, complex flavour—very sweet and juicy.
Loved this one!
Looks fabulous sliced on a plate with different coloured tomatoes and makes a delicious sauce. Everyone who tries it loves it.
https://seedsofimbolc.ca/product/green-giant-tomato/
The most productive and best tasting Green-when-ripe tomato I have tried! Very few seeds; outstanding, complex flavour—very sweet and juicy.
The flavour is fascinating because it combines just a slight bit of the richness of the black tomatoes in with a bright, tropical fruit note and some citrus.
Sugar is certainly present, which was a surprise given the green and the size.
Fruit is dense enough to please a beef-steak lover. Think the best fried green tomatoes ever.
Delicious green pasta sauce! Mix with darker tomatoes for a more traditional colour.

Todays Seed Spotlight (Veggie Style)
A RARE tomato variety I have offered for many years now:
Cherokee Purple - INDIAN STIPE aka “Indian Zebra”
https://seedsofimbolc.ca/product/indian-stripe-heirloom-tomato/

A very old heirloom that is thought to be a distinct strain of Cherokee Purple. This highly recommended variety bears large brick red fruit with occasional green striping.
Exquisite taste with the richness and complexity of fine wine.
Delicious!
Compact indeterminate, regular leaf foliage. 75 days
Flavour is best when fully ripe.
One of the best all around tomatoes for me!

The fruit gets its name from the faint green stripes that fade as tomatoes ripen -compared to Cherokee Purple, bears more heavily and the fruit is a bit lighter in colour.
It is productive, fruits are oblate, a bit smaller than ‘Cherokee Purple’, shoulders not as dark.
It stands up to heat, humidity, bugs, diseases, wilt, poor soil, lack of irrigation, abuse and inattentiveness, and still pumps out large, dense, sweet, tomato-y fruit with a meaty core.
(ALTHOUGH THAT TREATMENT ISN’T RECOMMENDED)

Plants will grow in containers – the larger the better ie. 5-10-gallon pots

“This variety was grown by Clyde Burson, who was in his 80’s, for as long as he could remember. Large fruit are purplish with green shoulders and occasional green striping. (The green striping is not present on most of the fruit produced.) One of the most delicious tomatoes that I have ever tasted..”

Todays veggie seed spotlight:
Cucumber – ‘Salt & Pepper ‘.
https://seedsofimbolc.ca/product/salt-pepper-cucumber-seed/
(Cucumis sativus)The most delicious crunchy cucumber I’ve eaten! The sweeter, smoother little sister of Silver Slicer, Salt & Pepper has Powdery Mildew as well as Angular Leaf Spot resistance, best suited for eating fresh and pickling. Small, squat, and cylindrical, roughly 7-12 cm long. Its outer skin is thin and white (pale green) with bumps and black spikes.
Cucumber seed is very easy to plant & grow. If you are just getting into growing, give them a go! They will need a support (fence, trellis, netting etc) to grow up.
I'm always thrilled to received feedback from you. Here is a lovely review from one of my customers:
"I bought several packets of these cucumbers for 2023 & grew them in both ’23 & ’24. (I’m ordering a few more packets today, for 2025.) These “Salt & Pepper” cucumbers are absolutely amazing. They started producing as early in the season as any other (non-hybrid) cukes I’ve ever grown & they stayed disease free even during the heat of mid August. Not a sign of powdery mildew or mosaic virus.

The fermented dills turned out as crisp & delicious & any green pickling variety I’ve used in the past (which includes Wisconsin SMR, Sumter, National Pickling, Chicago Pickling & Morden Early). ***But with the added bonus that the pickles are a lovely, pale, barely-a-hint-of-soft-green colour.***
NB. The black spines rub off when you wash them, before processing, so the pickles are a pure, creamy colour with no black specks. (Despite the name “Salt & Pepper” , there’s no “pepper” specks on the finished pickles.)

This year I’m going to try adding some beets to one batch of pickles. And turmeric to another batch…..hopefully the resulting pickles turn out pink & yellow, respectively.

I didn’t save seeds because I also grew slicing cucumbers both years (cross pollination is almost guaranteed). But since this variety is so mild & crisp I don’t feel the need to grow slicing cucumbers, anymore, so I’m going to start saving my own seeds because this is a variety I don’t want to lose. They’re the best.

NB: These white cucumbers are a LOT easier to find under the vines than green cucumbers.

NB #2: I’ve been growing cucumbers & fermenting pickles since the early 1990’s. This is a truly excellent variety & my new favourite.'
"Your Salt & Pepper cukes lived up to your description! Chunky little white cukes with tiny black spines are juicy, crisp & delish as well as very prolific & disease resistant!!! We grew 2 plants at our community garden (neighbourhood rabbit got the rest of the seedlings!) that produced 70+ cukes & flourished all season long!! Amazing germination, too! Thanks, Kat!! ❤️ ❤️"

Seed Spotlight:
Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa)

https://seedsofimbolc.ca/product/figwort-scrophularia-nodosa/
A hardworking perennial herb that will flower the first year from seed if started early.
Great for medicinal use, cut flower filler and pollinator magnet! Recommended by Erin at Floret
Branching plants produce an abundance of long stems smothered in rather inconspicuous, chocolate and green hood-like blooms, similar to snapdragons, which ripen into egg-shaped seed capsules and those seed pods are just the perfect bouquet filler for interest and movement!
Figworts are among the most prolific nectar producers in the plant world!
The whole plant is used to make medicine as it contains chemicals that might decrease pain and swelling (inflammation), fight infections & help wounds heal; typically prepared in topical applications, as an extract, or steeped as figwort tea. Here is a short IG video.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce_h4fwF8wc/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Leathery, long-lasting flowers have a bitter smokey scent, but attract more pollinators than any other plant around.
In addition to being a great textural bouquet filler, figwort is a must grow for the bees, wasps, flies, and hummingbirds – especially when planted in large clusters. Attracts beneficial predatory wasps.

Figworts are given a special rating by the Xerces Society because of their value to insects: "Special Value to Native Bees: recognized by pollination ecologists as attracting a large numbers of native bees." and "Supports Conservation Biological Control: A plant that attracts predatory or parasitoid insects that prey upon pest insects."

Figworts are among the most prolific nectar producers in the plant world. “Simpson’s honey plant” as it was known in the 1880’s when it was mass-planted in parts of the Midwest where beekeepers claimed a single acre could produce 400 to 800 pounds of honey that was prized for being light, clear, and aromatic.

Interesting Imbolc Lore IMBOLC is an ancient festival (February 2nd) to CELEBRATE THE SEED and Nature as they considered it to be unconditionally sacred, an expression or manifestation of deity and divinity.
