Perfecting your garden soil is an art fueled by science. The first step in perfecting your soil is figuring out what type of soil you have. This simple at-home test will help you determine your soil type.
Fill a large jar one-third of the way with soil and the rest with water. Shake the jar until the clumps are dissolved and set on a windowsill.
π±After waiting two minutes, all larger particles will have sunk to the bottom of the jar; mark this level on the jar; that's your sand content.
π±After two or three hours, smaller particles will have settled on the sand, mark this on the jar, and that is your silt content.
π±Leave the jar undisturbed overnight; your clay content will be the final layer of settled particles.
After sitting overnight, you will also see the organic content floating on the water's surface or suspended in the water column making the water murky. If your water is clear after the particles have settled, then that is a good indication that your soil requires more organic matter.
