Rhododendrons are one of my favourite flowers due to their sheer varieties and depth of colours. This first post will serve as an appetizer for the true colours I will share later on. Hang on to your hat, lest it blown off by the radiance of yellows, pinks, oranges and reds that I will soon share.

This first set of photos I captured in early June after a light rain, giving these Rhodos a tear kissed quality that sparkles in the lights. I reflect back on these beauties on late rainy April day, praying that the old proverb proves true that April showers will soon bring May flowers

At the twilight of Spring and the dawn of Summer blooms one the sweetest shrubs, the genus Syringa, or Lilacs. These beautiful blooms have been naturalized all over the world by gardeners and have hundreds of cultivars.

Lilac flowers come in a large variety of colours from creamy yellows and silvery whites to a vast array of violets. These cultivars bloomed as sweet pink flowers which mellowed into a melancholic purple as they aged, content to rest in the shade of their own leaves.

The beauty of lilacs goes far beyond their colours, for when they are in blooms an unmistakable and enchanting perfume fills the air. The scent of lilacs is similar to that of daffodils, sweet, crisp and refreshing, but more powerful, wafting far on a windy summer day. Lacking the headiness of rose, the perfume of lilac is lighter and sweeter, like the scent of rose reflected through water.

This May and June keep your eyes and noses open and you might just be delighted to find Syringa nearby!

Forget-me-nots and dandelions are among the first heralds of Spring. Their cheerful blue and yellow flowers adding a vibrant splash of colour to the dreariness of recently thawed lawns. While many people think of these flowers both as weeds, as early bloomers their pollen provides a valuable food source for the first pollinators to emerge.

While spring is still a few weeks off in this part of the world, when you see humble dandelion and forget-me-not take a second to appreciate their small, often overlooked beauty.
