We're getting excited for this summer's Downtown Gallery Hop! Be sure to include the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on your list of destinations on July 10 between 5-8 p.m.

Enjoy light snacks and refreshments as you explore current exhibitions featuring new work by Stephanie Weirathmueller, Sarah Eddie and Gill Salmon. Artists Guy Vezina, Milda Titford and Matt Watkins will have their individual studios open to welcome visitors, discuss their work and their creative processes. Open Your Art will also be open and welcoming visitors for a tour of their studio.

Visitors can also see the second instalment in Connexion Artist-Run-Centre's 40th anniversary exhibition series, made up of a wealth of archival material spanning the centre's history. Once known as Gallery Connexion and once located in the rear of the Justice Building, this organization has been helping push the boundaries of contemporary art in Fredericton since 1984.

Our friends at Capital Art Sale will be joining us to host an outdoor, pop-up show and sale (weather permitting) with all art $100 or less.

Last but not least, artist, NBCCD grad and friend of CSAC Emily Chase will be doing live sketching throughout the event.

It should be a great evening of art and community. Mark your calendars and make a plan to stop by CSAC on July 10. And be sure to visit our friends at Gallery 78, Gallery on Queen, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the George Fry Gallery, and The Artisan District.

We wanted to take a minute to honour our good friend Tim Boreland who is celebrating 16 years at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre!

Tim is an essential part of our family. He is kind, caring, generous, helpful, and regularly goes above and beyond to make sure our 140 year old home remains standing and functioning as it should. No one knows the ins and outs of our building better than Tim. He puts the "super" in superintendent every single day.

Thanks Tim. You're the best!

We're honoured to welcome new work by Fredericton artists Stephanie Weirathmueller, Sarah Eddie and Gill Salmon to the Charlotte Glencross and Penny Galleries later this month.

Stephanie's exhibition "Presence" is a visual reminder to appreciate each moment, and the people and places that feel like home.

Sarah's exhibition "To Stick Your Neck Out" is a reflection on the act of deep introspection, solitude, and finding solace in the pursuit of unity within the self.

Gill's A Calamitous Compendium in Cotton emphasizes the beauty of what can be seen under a microscope but that is so often overlooked.

We'll explore each of these three diverse collections in greater details in the weeks to come. But for now, save the date and join us in celebrating these artists, their work, and their contribution to our city's thriving visual arts culture.

Exhibition Opening: June 20, 4:30-6 p.m.

We’re honoured to showcase the work of 11 photography/videography students from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design through their exhibition, The View Finders, currently on display until June 14 in both the Penny and Charlotte Glencross Galleries here at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

Over the course of the exhibition we have been profiling some of the artists involved on our social feeds and encourage you all to stop by and experience this impressive collection in person.

This week we are sharing work by Alex Bustard who has a variety of images in this current exhibit.

“In 2023, I started developing this series of images that define the province of New Brunswick to me. Growing up in a small rural area with nature in my backyard I learned to really appreciate the land we live on and to see beauty in it. I shot on Polaroid 600 film to create playful and colourful images. I want people to see this work and be excited by the sights and life in New Brunswick.”

Artist Biography:

Alex Bustard is an emerging visual artist/photographer based in Fredericton, NB. Her process is extremely hands-on and exploratory - she often makes prints or shoots on instant film, then manipulates images or makes analogue collages. She is also passionate about painting, drawing and mixing mediums. Her work often incorporates loud colours, dramatic light and themes of nostalgia. She’s most inspired by cinema and spends most of her downtime enjoying films.

Show Announcement:
We're very excited to host a performance by the Brazilian quartet PASSARIM who are touring Canada for the first time!

PASSARIM is comprised of four musicians and songwriters who share a love for Brazilian music, especially the Bossa Nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto.

The project started in 2017 celebrating the 30 year anniversary of Jobim's first gold album Passarim (1987). From São Paulo's intense indie music scene, João Leão, Tika, Kika and Igor Caracas carefully adapted the album's original vocal and orchestral arrangements into a reduced formation with unique style, arriving at a renewed Bossa Nova vibe with vocal effects, electric guitars, synths and a touch of psychedelia. The performance is classy, captivating and magnetic.
The group has showcased with great success through the main jazz venues and theatres in and around São Paulo (Brazil) since 2017, also releasing two official singles in 2020.

The year of 2024 marks 30 years since the passing of our beloved Jobim, and to celebrate his life and art the group will present a very special performance in São Paulo featuring Jaques Morelenbaum and Paula Morelenbaum, two of the original members of Jobim's ensemble during the Passarim phase. The group will also have their first international tour performing in Canada in July.

PASSARIM | July 12 | Charlotte Street Arts Centre | 7:30 p.m.
Tix and $20 in advance (https://shorturl.at/ec3s7) and $25 at the door.
