Show Announcement:
We're very excited to host a performance by the Brazilian quartet PASSARIM who are touring Canada for the first time!
PASSARIM is comprised of four musicians and songwriters who share a love for Brazilian music, especially the Bossa Nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto.
The project started in 2017 celebrating the 30 year anniversary of Jobim's first gold album Passarim (1987). From São Paulo's intense indie music scene, João Leão, Tika, Kika and Igor Caracas carefully adapted the album's original vocal and orchestral arrangements into a reduced formation with unique style, arriving at a renewed Bossa Nova vibe with vocal effects, electric guitars, synths and a touch of psychedelia. The performance is classy, captivating and magnetic.
The group has showcased with great success through the main jazz venues and theatres in and around São Paulo (Brazil) since 2017, also releasing two official singles in 2020.
The year of 2024 marks 30 years since the passing of our beloved Jobim, and to celebrate his life and art the group will present a very special performance in São Paulo featuring Jaques Morelenbaum and Paula Morelenbaum, two of the original members of Jobim's ensemble during the Passarim phase. The group will also have their first international tour performing in Canada in July.
PASSARIM | July 12 | Charlotte Street Arts Centre | 7:30 p.m.
Tix and $20 in advance (https://www.zeffy.com/ticketing/ce812962-0da4-4a8f-9d14-dd58a362fdc2) and $25 at the door.

'Sleeping On / The Present' rolled through the Arts Centre last night. A big thank you to the team for brining such a powerful and unique piece to Fredericton! 🌞
Sleeping On / The Present is an experimental music show featuring prepared video installments. From the artists:
"Sleeping On / The Present is the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between percussionist Noam Bierstone, trombonist Weston Olencki, and composer/media artist Sam Salem, combining two new, ambitious long-form solo works for instruments, objects, live electronics, and video. Sleeping On / The Present explores time, distance, and the psychogeography of memory, reimagining the relationship between performer, electronics, media, and audience."
Admission is by donation. Join us Tuesday evening at 7:30pm!
Sam Salem, Weston Olencki & Noam Bierstone present Sleeping On / The Present at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton, as part a tour of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia!
‘Sleeping On / The Present’ is the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between percussionist Noam Bierstone, trombonist Weston Olencki, and composer/media artist Sam Salem, combining two new, ambitious long-form solo works for instruments, objects, live electronics, and video. Sleeping On / The Present explores time, distance, and the psychogeography of memory, reimagining the relationship between performer, electronics, media, and audience.
‘The Way Up & The Way Down’ (2023) explores and reinterprets Salem's own archive of materials and associated memories, repurposing a 12-string acoustic guitar as an augmented percussion instrument. Bierstone navigates a delicate and volatile setup of the work in an intimate, devotional space, drifting in and out of timelessness in a world where dreams of the past have replaced visions of the future.
In ‘Bury Me Deep’ (2022), Olencki forms a duet, a kind of seance, between their present self and an AI model created from a comprehensive database of over 3000 recordings of their performance techniques made specifically for this project. A suspended trombone reincarnates the disembodied acousmatic sound world of the piece, which moves from the present to the past, from snapshots of South Carolina to AI-mediated footage of a Drum Corp competition. A ghostly choreography, Bury Me Deep is Southern Gothic in the age of the Machine.
