Tulips are (almost) planted... 2500 total, 1900 of them in the ground!

I have a few more varieties to go, several bags of daffodils to plant, and then this job is complete.

Today was a good day ☀️

Special delivery yesterday. Zinnias and marigolds were the star of the bouquet, with snapdragons, feverfew, frosted explosion, ammi and cosmos added in to round out the arrangement.

Summer colours are bright and happy.
Two more weeks left of summer vacation before kids go back to school. Hope you mommas out there are soaking in the magic of unscheduled days.

Calmer fall days are right around the corner.

Thank goodness for the flowers I planted in my old veggie beds. They are growing beautifully and the flowers that are blooming there are keeping this small little business chugging along.

To the person who ordered two custom flower bouquets from my website yesterday: thank you for making my day. It was the first order I've generated from my website and it absolutely lifted my spirits.

Just a reminder that you too can order from my website. I am in Orillia/Gravenhurst often and am happy to deliver a bit of sunshine to your kitchen table!

(Please don't judge the meager quality of the site —it's a work in progress 😂)

Summer flower bouquets!

I mixed zinnias with a few dark purple cosmos, bright orange marigolds, ammi (a cultivated variety of queen anne's lace that you see growing in ditches all over) and frosted explosion, which is the feathery spray in this mix.

Summer bouquets are bright and happy and make a statement.

Why buy flowers?

In 2005, a 10 month study on participants behavioural and emotional responses to flowers found that not only were participants happy to receive the flowers (duh), but that this didn’t only occur for the initial gift-giving; the study also recorded that the participants were less depressed or anxious for three days afterwards, too.

Another study by Dr. Hamilton-Jones found that those giving the flowers felt 88% happier too, and that flowers have been found to make office spaces 15% more productive for employees.

The science:

🌸 When we look at or smell flowers, they stimulate the release of dopamine, often referred to as the "feel-good" chemical. Dopamine is responsible for feelings of happiness and pleasure, and by triggering its release, flowers can instantly boost our mood.

🌸 Flowers also increase levels of serotonin in our brains. Serotonin is known as the "happy hormone" and plays a crucial role in regulating emotions and promoting overall well-being. This means you'll be less anxious and stressed. Seriously.

So why buy flowers? Well, have you complained about being anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, or just generally unhappy lately?

Buy yourself the damn flowers. You will feel better—I promise.

(This bouquet is giving all the wildflowery vibes and I just adore it. Lots of these available so please reach out!)

'Antique Rose' Stock from Johnny's Seeds.

While I am significantly (underline and bold, please) struggling to grow things in my new flower beds, these beauties grew in my old veggie beds with gusto.

OH MY GOSH I wish you could smell them. Cinnamon mixed with nutmeg, with a hint of something spicy I just can't identify. I can't stop inhaling them!

If you'd like a sniff too, head over to Scoopz in Washago. I have a small drop of flowers heading there today and these cuties will be part of the mix.

How do we feel about marigolds?

I am sitting on the fence with these. I don't love the smell. The blooms are ok I guess. Yellow and orange are not my favourite colours for a flower bouquets. But they are blooming (yay!) and the stem length is longer than I expected.

Do you agree?

Some thank you bouquets headed out early tomorrow am. Featuring roses, peonies, sweet peas and yarrow!

While roses have a shorter vase life than other cut flowers, and are therefore typically reserved for wedding use only, these ones have several partially opened buds right underneath the main bloom so they will put on a show for several days at least.

Peonies are coming to an end and it makes me sad but snapdragons and summer flowers are on deck so it will be ok 🤪

Lilacs smell like heaven on earth.

One thing I am struggling with in this business is figuring out the seasonality of different flowers. In other words, how do I get multiple different types of flowers to bloom at the same time in order to make a bouquet? In summer it is easy, but in spring, not so much.

My current challenge is that I don't have actively blooming flowers. Tulips are finished. Nothing else is ready (peonies are soooo close). People are asking for flowers but I've had to turn them away. And while I realize that lilacs are in bloom, since nothing else is blooming I figured that there was nothing I could do with 'just' lilacs.

Then I wandered around outside at 5:30am this morning and cut a bunch of stems and made this bouquet of 'just lilacs' and realized that these are gorgeous and that I missed something somewhere in my thinking process.

Oops.

Anyone want some 'just lilac' bouquets?

I'll be over here making notes and learning things. Like how not to disregard flowers that are blooming because it is just one thing and nothing else 🤦‍♀️

Week 3 spring flower subscription: the last of the tulips.

Two final varieties for my subscribers, Salmon van Eijk and a single tulip called Purple Prince.

I thought the salmon would be my favourite but purple prince stole the show for me.
