HISTORIC PIECES OF MONT-BLANC RECOVERED WHILE DREDGING HALIFAX HARBOUR!

HISTORIC PIECES OF MONT-BLANC RECOVERED WHILE DREDGING HALIFAX HARBOUR - Earlier this year, Irving Shipbuilding workers dredging Halifax Harbour uncovered significant pieces from the SS Mont-Blanc, the French ammunition ship at the center of the Halifax Explosion.

On December 6, 1917, the Mont-Blanc collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo, caught fire, and exploded with catastrophic force. The blast leveled an area of Halifax, killed over 1,700 people, and injured an estimated 9,000 others. Debris from the Mont-Blanc's explosion was scattered across the area, with one of the ship’s cannons landing as far away as North End Dartmouth. The SS Imo, which was heavily damaged in the explosion, grounded in Dartmouth. At the time, the Halifax Explosion was the largest human-made blast in history, a record it held until the use of nuclear weapons.

Despite the significance of the discovery, it remains unclear whether the artifacts recovered from the harbour bottom will be preserved or displayed for public viewing. The find has sparked interest among historians and local enthusiasts who believe the artifacts hold historic significance and should be preserved.
