This is why we keep up with the news! Our own LIVELab Technical Director Dan Bosnyak shared his impressions of an apocalyptic art piece in the Toronto Star!

For a self-proclaimed first-time art critic, we think you nailed it. Dan!

Do you know any little ones who are at a musical camp?
Did you know that music training is associated with better reading skills in children?

When looking at word decoding and reading comprehension skills in 6 to 9 year old normal-achieving readers, the length of music training predicted reading comprehension.

This association may be due to musical training that affects auditory abilities involved in word decoding.

Have the melodies of popular music gotten simpler between the days of Nat King Cole and Taylor Swift?

A new study shows decreasing complexity and increasing note density in popular melodies over time since 1950, with specific "revolutions" in 1975 and 2000 delineating three specific musical eras. In each era, melodies got less complex.

Register today to be part of the 12th annual McMaster Conference on Education and Cognition, July 11 and 12!

This year's theme is: “Motivated to Learn: The role of motivation in the science of learning.“

Cognitive scientists have been systemically studying processes such as attention, memory and learning for more than 150 years. This rich resource of knowledge has been only recently applied to developing evidence-based interventions in education. The speakers in this Conference will explore how cognitive principles can inform instructional design and critical issues in education to bridge the gap between the lab and classroom.

Get all the details and plan to be there in person or online: https://edcog.pnb.mcmaster.ca/

Did you know that the LIVELab's trademark windows at McMaster's Psychology Building are abstract representations of musical notes from John Lennon's masterpiece song 'Imagine' and the Beatles' classic 'Across the Universe'?
What's your favourite Beatles song?

For a lot of high schoolers in the area, they are in exam season ... even grad season. So we're throwing it back to a school visit from this spring!

A student was hooked up to a heart rate monitor. We put the spotlight on the student and asked him to give a speech – we could see that his heart rate projected on the video wall spiked! Measuring physiology such as heart rate is one of the features we can do in the LIVELab. We can measure heart rate variability in audience members during a concert.

Heart rate can provide insights into your physiological response to various stimuli, including attending a concert. Here are a few things your heart rate might indicate in such a setting.

Excitement and Enjoyment: A higher-than-resting heart rate can suggest that you are excited, engaged, and enjoying the music and overall concert experience. Music has the power to evoke strong emotions, and an increased heart rate might be a sign of a positive response.

Connection with the Music: A synchronized or rhythmic heart rate might suggest that you are feeling a strong connection with the music. Research has shown that music can have a profound impact on heart rate, influencing it to synchronize with the tempo and emotional content of the music.

Also ... let's give a round of applause for our brave speaker!

Have you ever wondered how you can tell whether the person you’re dating is interested in you or not? Can body movement reveal romantic interest as early as a first date?

To answer this question, we traded the LIVELab’s concert seats for café tables. Volunteers went on a series of short dates with other singles while we recorded their body sway with motion capture. After each date, each participant confidentially recorded their level of romantic interest in their partner.

What did we discover? Read all about it: https://livelab.mcmaster.ca/speed-dating/

Looking for something cool to stream this weekend?

‘The Art of Science’ takes you behind the scenes and into the minds of our researchers and scientists.

It’s all about telling the stories behind LIVELab research studies.

This series shows that our scientists and researchers are artists themselves,
just as much as the artists they research.

Sounds you can’t hear might actually make you dance more! Very-low frequency (VLF) bass (8-37Hz) is outside of the human ear’s natural range to perceive sound, however, in a live concert study it was found that when VLF bass was playing alongside music, audience movement increased from baseline an average of 12%!

You probably have lots of questions about this – and so do we! Stay tuned as the research team on this project tries to pinpoint exactly what causes this effect, using techniques such as vestibular situation, subpacks and more to narrow down the cause of this phenomenon.

One of the most unique features of our lab is the ability to measure the brain waves (EEG), heart rates, breathing rates, and skin conductance (GSR) of up to 32 audience members or performers at the same time. This allows for studying physiology en masse in response to stimuli.

Our lab’s Noraxon Wireless DTS can capture muscle activity from up to eight separate channels, as well as biological activity (heart rates, breathing rates, body temperature and in up to four people.

Simple, unobtrusive, and lightweight transmitters are attached to participants quickly and easily allowing for new research innovations.

Check out EEG in action below and watch the whole video on our YouTube channel!

The weekend calls for a good concert and we have a small sample from a great concert to share!

In September of 2022, Alex Whorms and her band performed for a concert experiment on audience motion and emotion. Lead researcher Dana Swarbrick, doctoral researcher at the University of Oslo's RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion, delivered a Science Snapshot presentation on the research experiment.

The live audience's head motion was measured with the LIVELab's motion capture system and both the live and livestreaming audiences had their body motion measured with MoCap hats and the MusicLab App. Both audiences filled surveys that measured their emotions.
