Ever since we announced that the 20th NeuroMusic Conference is running for three days this November, we've had NeuroMusic on the mind.
So we're taking a break to stream the dance duet from the 2021 NeuroMusic keynote lecture and performance!
See you at NeuroMusic November 1 to 3!

It's summer at LIVELab and we are up for some R&R.
We're not taking it too easy, though! Here in the Psychology Building, R&R stands for research and rhythm!
There's ALWAYS something happening at LIVELab.

For a lot of high schoolers in the area, they are in exam season ... even grad season. So we're throwing it back to a school visit from this spring!
A student was hooked up to a heart rate monitor. We put the spotlight on the student and asked him to give a speech – we could see that his heart rate projected on the video wall spiked! Measuring physiology such as heart rate is one of the features we can do in the LIVELab. We can measure heart rate variability in audience members during a concert.
Heart rate can provide insights into your physiological response to various stimuli, including attending a concert. Here are a few things your heart rate might indicate in such a setting.
Excitement and Enjoyment: A higher-than-resting heart rate can suggest that you are excited, engaged, and enjoying the music and overall concert experience. Music has the power to evoke strong emotions, and an increased heart rate might be a sign of a positive response.
Connection with the Music: A synchronized or rhythmic heart rate might suggest that you are feeling a strong connection with the music. Research has shown that music can have a profound impact on heart rate, influencing it to synchronize with the tempo and emotional content of the music.
Also ... let's give a round of applause for our brave speaker!

Have you ever wondered how you can tell whether the person you’re dating is interested in you or not? Can body movement reveal romantic interest as early as a first date?
To answer this question, we traded the LIVELab’s concert seats for café tables. Volunteers went on a series of short dates with other singles while we recorded their body sway with motion capture. After each date, each participant confidentially recorded their level of romantic interest in their partner.
What did we discover? Read all about it: https://livelab.mcmaster.ca/speed-dating/

One of the most unique features of our lab is the ability to measure the brain waves (EEG), heart rates, breathing rates, and skin conductance (GSR) of up to 32 audience members or performers at the same time. This allows for studying physiology en masse in response to stimuli.
Our lab’s Noraxon Wireless DTS can capture muscle activity from up to eight separate channels, as well as biological activity (heart rates, breathing rates, body temperature and in up to four people.
Simple, unobtrusive, and lightweight transmitters are attached to participants quickly and easily allowing for new research innovations.

The weekend calls for a good concert and we have a small sample from a great concert to share!
In September of 2022, Alex Whorms and her band performed for a concert experiment on audience motion and emotion. Lead researcher Dana Swarbrick, doctoral researcher at the University of Oslo's RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion, delivered a Science Snapshot presentation on the research experiment.
The live audience's head motion was measured with the LIVELab's motion capture system and both the live and livestreaming audiences had their body motion measured with MoCap hats and the MusicLab App. Both audiences filled surveys that measured their emotions.

Bayview Glen Concert Band visited the LIVELab in early March and were the very first users of our brand new eye trackers in a pilot study.
Students enjoyed a LIVELab tour and learned all about the different technology we use to answer research questions about music and health.
In the afternoon, 30 band members set up on our stage and tested out the eyeglasses in preparation for The Innocents documentary and performance – which was the first use of eye tracking technology in the world of this scale.
One of the first songs they played was the theme from Star Wars.
May the 4th be with you!

LIVELab is buzzing with hundreds of Grade 1 students from the Hamilton Music Collective’s 'An Instrument for Every Child' program this week!
Students will tour the space and will be introduced to the concept of sound, technology, music and science. The interactive sessions will be run by LIVELab staff, undergraduate and graduate students.
We're looking forward to working with HMC on this event to bring together music and science in a fun, engaging way!
Check out this clip from last year's visits and watch this space for cool stuff from this week!
