Happy International Women’s Day to all of the beautiful and dynamic women we know and love and also to the ones we haven’t met yet.

Sticks and Stones is only the most recent iteration of Kate’s floral passion which started in 2010 when she had a flower and coffee shop in the east end of Toronto.

A couple of moves and children later she’s still slinging blooms motivated by the beauty of the natural world and supporting her family through her creativity.

On this day and everyday, especially in this political climate, it’s important that we champion all those who identify as women and support them, love them and honour them.

Tried to post this on Saturday but the instagram gods wouldn’t let me and kept deleting my captions…. Aaanyways!

We’re happy to announce that the webshop is once again active. We have ordered blooms and I (Kate) am back in the studio at the end of this week.

I am not fully recovered by any means but we must march forward and keep our heads up because the world keeps turning and we have two very cute babies to take care of.

We’ve had lots of folx ask how they can support our small business and Harry and I can’t thank this community enough for holding us in your thoughts and supporting however you can.

I have renamed my favourite bouquet the “Fresh Start”. If you need a pick me up like so many of us do right now, this is for you. Not only is it pretty as heck and locally grown but the profits help us keep this business going and keep our family in a safe and secure place financially.

Flower pickups and deliveries will start Saturday.

We have changed the delivery times to the evenings to make life a bit easier for us and to make sure there aren’t flowers left outside in the cold. If you need them delivered at a different time you can always just call and order directly.

** Trigger warning - trauma, illness, coma **
But this is a happy post I promise 🫶

Hey! Kate here 🧚🏻‍♀️

I have wondered how to write this post for a couple of days. Party due to the content and partly because my brain is still trying to piece together what happened. To say that I have endured some psychological and physical trauma is putting it lightly.

I have had a lot of hallucinations during my 9 day coma and I’m struggling with piecing together what is real.

The point is that I’m alive and home. 🏠

I CANNOT thank this community enough for their ongoing support of our family. Hamilton, you have stood up for us over and over again and our appreciation and love for you will never falter.

As for our little business there is a bit that is up in the air but my intention is to return to the studio next weekend.
This business is my baby and while it’s obvious that I need to physically slow down, I am determined to find a way to work smarter and not harder.

I have always been a very ambitious person and this recent health crisis has demanded that I reevaluate how I operate this business and my own life so that something like this never happens again.

The truth about floral design is that it’s an extremely labour intensive job. I’m not a weak person but I need to be careful about how I use my body.

The other truth about this business is that it’s struggling, like most small businesses in this brutal economy. So I ask this with the utmost sincerity. When we reopen please do what you can to support us. Like and share our posts. Tell your friends and let us know when you need flowers. We completely understand that flowers are a luxury and that our offering is not the least expensive option. If you saw the overhead costs involved I think you’d understand. What we do here isn’t what they do at the grocery store so I hope you can appreciate the difference.

I’ll wrap up by thanking Harry, I don’t know if we’ve mentioned but he recently went back to funeral directing but he pulled off Valentine’s Day and took care of our kids and me like I knew he could. I’m so sorry he had to. I am so lucky to have you Harry.

Content warning: mention of digestive medical trauma

Hi it’s Harry here with an update:

Kate, as many of you already know, suffers from a rare digestive condition called Hollow Viscous Myopathy which she’s had since birth. It’s sort of a muscular dystrophy of the digestive tract meaning the smooth muscle is unable to contract and pass food and fluids through effectively, she also receives IV nutrition nightly through a port in her chest.

Along with all her usual symptoms of chronic nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and distension, inability to tolerate oral feeds, and rapid weight loss she occasionally gets GI bleeds which can often be serious, and this is one such time :(

I don’t need to say much more other than to thank the staff at for their tireless work keeping Kate stable and comfortable despite the complications involved.

Thank you also to those who have reached out and given help in the varied ways you are all able. It’s humbling to be held in this way and Jude, Elphi, and myself are struck by your generosity.

At this time I am keeping Valentine’s Day orders open with all tips counting as help towards Kate’s recovery. More to come as I figure a few things out 🌹

It’s like building miniature environments, little gardens on tabletops.

Gifting flowers isn’t just giving flowers, stems cut from their roots and displayed for a few days before they’re gone.

Gifting flowers is, or at least it should be, transporting someone back to nature, bringing them out of this world and into another. Flowers remind me of all the cycles that I’m part of, flowers are the embodiment of defiant beauty.

It doesn’t matter what’s happening out there, now and for the moment all that matters is texture and colour and shape. What does it remind you of? Where does it take you?

Looking at flowers is rest for me. I hope our flowers bring you that kind of bliss. 🧘‍♀️🕊️🍃

Today a friend came to the studio to help me learn how to take photos on something other than an iPhone.

These are not the photos we took-lol-sorry, they’re for a special project for January 2025 but my brain already hurts from trying to understand something new.

My dad was a photographer and I learned when I was young but I’m not young anymore and learning is tough.

Never too old though right?

I’m excited to show you what I’m working on though, it’s got the potential to create a very bright future for this little business and I really hope that it works out.
