I have never been a big trend follower in photo editing trends over my 8 years of professional photography…

But…..

I’m so in it’s not even funny!
I’m letting all my wedding couples know this year that so long as they’re okay with it, I’ll do a portion of their wedding photos in this style. I really love the nostalgic feel it brings to my photos and it’s a ‘trend’ I’m admittedly getting on the bandwagon for ❤️

For the bride that wants her girls to ‘pick their own dress’
First of all- you rock! Giving bridesmaids autonomy over this decision is exceptionally kind and thoughtful and will surely help your girls feel their best on the day.
A couple tips I suggest to execute this vision well:
1. Find a perfect inspo image online. Not a ‘it’s perfect except this colour, or this design’ this would leave room for misunderstanding so do your best to find a picture that is exactly the aesthetic you envision.
2. Make a digital swatch grid online with each colour you’re open to
3. If you are going for an equal assortment (ie. 2 blue, 2 green, 2 floral) tell the girls in the group chat that its first come first served so after the first two girls have purchased and confirmed their dresses- the colour is no longer on the table!
4. Let them know if there are certain styles or fabrics you are not okay (ie. no strapless, or no chiffon)
5. The more the bridesmaids the more room for variety! This is a great plan for groups of 6-12 bridesmaids because there is more room for variety/error in the plan. If you have four or less bridesmaids this might be a decision you would like a bit more say in and that is totally okay!

Wedding mornings from a brides perspective have so many ‘should do’ photo moments. These include:
✨Details Photos
✨A photo of just the dress
✨Mom or MOH helping the bride in to the dress
✨Reading a letter from the brides fiancé
✨First Look with her bridesmaids
✨First Look with Dad
Ect. Ect. Ect.
Do you need to do all these? No!
Is it okay if you want to anyways? YES!
Most of these ‘should’ photos present the opportunity for real connection and real memories to be made. So while yes we are ‘setting up’ these first looks, the actual moment is very authentic and very precious. At this wedding, Rachel’s father here put both Austin and I in to a flood of tears, him seeing his daughter as a bride still gives me goosebumps- so cute!
I’ll never pressure any of my brides to complete this full list, I just want you to know that they are not mainstream for no reason- you may in fact really enjoy seeing these moments come out of your wedding day 🤍

My name’s Dani, Danielle, Daarssen ect.
And I, like everyone else tells me about themselves, feel very awkward in front of the camera.
However- these are photos one of my best friends took of me, we were laughing and having a great time and eventually taking these photos became very fun!
That’s exactly the kind of experience I hope I leave everyone I photograph with. I want to get to be your photographer, but it’s fortunately not rare that we also become friends. I do believe the best photos come from that totally at-ease, guard down, and relaxed place we find ourselves in when we’re amongst our friends.
I still look super goofy in these photos- but I think it’s an accurate representation of my true self, and that makes me happy to see!

My top tips for making sure your wedding day is actually FUN for the two of you:
1. Never ever leave your new spouse’s side. Talk to everyone and experience everything at the wedding as a team
2. Give yourself a little break away from everyone (even your photographer) so you can regroup and catch your breath together. The best time for this is right after your ceremony or right before your reception entrances
3. Select a bridal party that is full of good energy. I mean it, the Debby downer will really hone in on any aspects of the day that maybe aren’t ’picture perfect’ and we don’t need that!
4. Pick music for your ceremony, reception, first dance, ect. That the two of you actually like listening to together. Ie. If you blast Zach Bryan on every road trip and then he’s playing over your DJ’s speakers during dinner, it will feel comforting and sweet that this is the music you’ve memorized together and it’s now being played at your wedding day.
5. Select vendors that like to have fun! The best way to figure this out is to follow them on social media and pay attention to how they seem in their BTS wedding content- or go off of personal recommendations and google reviews! Certain vendors (photographer, videographer, planner, ect) are with you all day long! If they have a light and fun loving attitude towards their work you are sure to feed in to that energy.
6. Plan the day for fun! Hire entertainers, a great DJ, or plan games for your MC to facilitate.
7. Remove all notions of ‘weddings are supposed to be like x’ and traditionalism. If something traditional causes you to be bored or worse- stressed! Don’t do it
8. Hire a planner- this will save you from stress, late nights planning, set up and take down stress, and more!
9. If there’s something cute or funny you could surprise your spouse with at the wedding- do it!
An extreme version of this would be to surprise your spouse with a puppy (if you’re already on that wavelength and were planning on getting one after the wedding ofcourse!). A less extreme version might be to serenade them or orchestrate a ‘flash dance’ with your bridal party for them. An even less extreme version would be a gag gift!

Some things to keep in mind for your engagement session :
⚡️ If you want your wedding trial and engagement session to all line up on the same day- you need to check with all vendors early about their availability and lock a date in. If you reach out about availability but don’t actually book until 3 weeks later this may not be possible in the end due to a busy booking season.
⚡️Yes you do want to think about outfits and coordinating (I suggest two outfits!) but no you do not necessarily need to go buy all new clothes. You should wear clothes that are comfortable and activity appropriate for your session (if you’re hiking a steep trail there is nothing wrong with wearing hiking boots instead of heels!)
⚡️Your photographer (hopefully me! 🙊) can make a huge list of suggestions for beautiful locations but some of my favourites are when we go to the location you met, redo your first date, or take lifestyle homey photos of you making pasta in your kitchen or playing with your dog in your backyard, ect.
⚡️Book in a season that isn’t the same season as your wedding date. Ie. If your wedding is in the fall maybe take spring engagement photos. This is because hopefully both your engagement and wedding photos will make it to your walls and it’s so nice to see a variety of seasons between the two. Otherwise the photos may translate as though you got engaged and married all within the same month.
⚡️if you’re worried about ‘being awkward in front of the camera’ - EVERYONE IS. I swear to you I almost never photograph an engagement session where the couple doesn’t express this sentiment in some way. Within the first ten minutes of taking photos you will grow more comfortable and if you are still finding yourself feeling awkward try and focus on your partner as much as possible. Whisper in their ear while photos are being taken and tell them how you’re feeling, close your eyes while your hugging them and block out the sight and thought of the camera, ect. Eventually I promise you are going to grow more relaxed and present with your partner which is all we want for this session!

After the ceremony procession made its way down the aisle I noticed everyone was booking it for the trees… so naturally I followed them, only to find at the top of the hill there were a few coolers waiting! I thought this was such a nice touch for the new Mr and Mrs to have a moment with just their besties away from the rest of their wedding where they could crack a cold one and toast their best friends and the second (even more fun) half of the wedding day!

Hamilton has countless beautiful locations for photo sessions but golden hour setting over Lake Ontario is definitely a favourite. Unplugged ceremony signs and why you shouldn’t even bother… Quiete honestly if you had to remind half your guests of the rsvp deadline, there’s a high chance they’re not going to notice, read, or abide by a sign. This is my unpopular opinion but I don’t care if people take photos during the ceremony on their phones- they just absolutely cant not be taking them from their aisle or second seat in from the aisle seat- those will get in the way of the photos I’m trying to take. I genuinely want to take your engagement photos prior to your wedding, so much so that I’ve made it totally free for all of my wedding couples. It does happen that people choose not to take me up on it- and I understand the year you get married is a super busy one! The reason it’s so important however is because I genuinely believe you will have a better experience and better photos from your wedding if you give me an hour of your time to hang out prior to the wedding so I can understand your dynamic and values and you can get a sense for how I work and why I work in a certain way. Lastly- I think you deserve to enjoy every aspect of being a fiancé and having engagement photos is just part of it. Whether your wedding is at the family cottage, farm, or your backyard- these are the things you very well may be forgetting! 1. Is there enough parking for everyone? AND are you okay with vehicles being left overnight. If there isn’t enough parking- the best thing you can do is arrange for a shuttle to pick people up from a local hotel, arena, or other location with an abundance of free parking. 2. Blankets, bug spray, fans, umbrellas, flip flops- all of these items will help make your guests most comfortable no matter the weather you get even 30 degree days can get chilly in the evening so it’s great to have all of the above 3. Bathroom emergency caddy’s- assuming you are renting washrooms, it’s very considerate to have a caddy of washroom essentials such as hair spray, mints, bandaids, fem hygiene,ect. for your guests 4. If you want to get epic golden hour photos- is the area where you see the sun set the best cleared and going to be available to use for photos in the later evening? If not- I’d highly recommend some rearranging 5. Edison bulbs, citronella candles (stakes), and other lighting. Especially if you’re far from the city, nighttime will be surprisingly dark so if you want the party to go late-plan to light the party/dance area well! 6. Liquor license from your province! (I hope this ones obvious) 7. A shuttle or cab service available and posted for your guests- or welcome them to camp/bring a trailer and make it a weekend event! 8. A rented dance floor! Dancing on a deck or grass yard sounds possible until you try it. Investing in a rented dance floor is in fact worth it! 9. A smoking area- in open air weddings some people will assume they can smoke anywhere. For many reasons from safety to your other guests comfort- you should designate an area for smokers. If you want to be especially cut throat you can also just say it can’t be done on your property but you’ll want to consider the safety of this ofcourse as well. 10

To be extra clear- it’s awesome when the MOB can help the bride with planning, hosting a shower, and doing the ‘pre-wedding’ tasks. My advice is just to keep her ‘to do list’ empty on the day itself. Try to outsource any day of tasks to aunts, friends, groomsmen, ect. Okay here it is! While budget is important for any wedding couple planning their day, these are considerably as, if not more important questions to be asking! 1. Have you photographed a wedding at my or a similar style wedding venue/location before? How do you light photos after the sun goes down? Can I see a real wedding gallery with similar elements as my wedding from day to night? 2. Do you have backup gear and backup support if your equipment or yourself run in to something unforeseen right before my wedding? 3. Do you deliver sneak peeks? What is the turn around time I should expect following our wedding to recieve our final gallery? If these things aren’t discussed and included in your wedding contract, you should run! But, if your dream photographer does check these three boxes you can rest assured they’ve got you and you can check this item off of your list! • • • • • • •
Everyone warned me about this and were so sure I’d fall in to due to how EXCITED I was while planning our wedding. However, I 100% avoided it and this is how I think I managed to do so 🤍 Additionally, I planned our day over 18 months. In that time I was training my rehomed dog, renovating my first studio, and getting to know my spouses family and friends better as the restrictions lifted. Neither of us missed out on any element of pre-wedding events we looked forward to our whole lives. I had time to find and alter my three wedding gowns and my husband got to go on the bachelor trip his friends planned for him. Our wedding day certainly had a few hiccups but nothing that could disturb the joy and happiness that we felt. Two days after our wedding we left on our honeymoon and I am absolutely biased by my own experience that our whole wedding experience would not have felt the same if we didn’t have that trip planned for immediately following the wedding- it was so special. If you are planning on postponing your honeymoon to when it’s cold in Canada but hot in your destination- that makes sense! But still plan a few nights away somewhere relaxing- Ie. NOTL, Huntsville, Collingwood, ect. If you’re local to Ontario. This was my BIGGEST regret, and money wasted on my own wedding and it is so avoidable. I offer the two best options for a wedding photobooth solution at the end of this video. Please don’t be like me and think that you can pay half price for a wedding service and still recieve the full value- it unfortunately doesn’t work like that. We’re all human, and I am more than willing to share my missteps if it helps you save money and/or have an even better experience at your wedding. I got so much heat for this! And I’m still not sorry ;) Bridesmaids should be your ‘ride or die’ people, period. There’s no certain number, look, or set of rules when it comes to your wedding- it is literally your wedding! Have 0 if you want! A few additional details on how I managed a 12 person bridal party and what the costs were for me and my bridesmaids: 1. My bridesmaids picked and paid for their own dress. I believe the lowest priced one was $15 and the most expensive was $240- it was their call at the end of the day and one of my bridesmaids was even able to use hers again soon after for another wedding! 2. I paid for everyone’s bouquets but kept the costs down with mini bouquets from @sugarbloomfloral using pampas and a few spray roses 3. I bought us all matching pajamas and booked a large photography studio to all get ready in. Having hair and makeup done professionally was optional for everyone. 4. My bridesmaids were soooo helpful! One of them (@sab_joy_bridal) did both of my hairstyles on the day for me. Another (@elizabethingold) did all of my social media content by using my phone to take clips and photos throughout the day. The girls were so helpful from steaming my dress, to making sure I always had a drink and teeth check before photos.
