Trancecultural Frequencies: Tocani with ShaaMaa live at the Mule Spinner
Tocani is a contemporary fusion band formed in 2017 and based in Toronto/Tkaronto, Canada/Turtle Island. Its members—Luis Rojas, Guillermo López, Alfonso Galicia, Jesús Mora, and Camilo Giraldo—all have their roots further south in the Americas.
With Tocani (a Nahuatl term that means “the one who plants the seed” or semprador in Spanish), this group of friends seeks to explore ancient, pre-Hispanic traditions and re-interpret them for the present day, interweaving Nahuatl language, mythology, urban legends, popular stories, and the sounds of everyday city life to both connect them to their ancestry and to use traditional ways of knowing and doing to gain a fresh perspective on today.
ShaaMaa is an improv-based music collective and friendship that came together in spring 2023 at the Mule Spinner. Willy MacAulay (guitar), Cesar Cordoba (keys, synths, accordion), and Gurpreet Chana (tabla, percussion) were each immersed in their own music in neighboring studios at The Cotton Factory in Hamilton when their sounds began to connect in unexpected ways. Following an introduction by Glen Marshall the groups recordist ShaaMaa has been exploring an evolving instrumental soundscape, letting the music take them wherever it wants to go in both live performance and in the studio.
Come join us for a mesmerizing night of Trancecultural Frequencies featuring the talented artists Tocani and ShaaMaa live at The Mule Spinner. Get ready to immerse yourself in a unique blend of music that transcends cultural boundaries and takes you on a sonic journey like no other. This in-person event promises to be an unforgettable experience, so mark your calendars and don't miss out!

Our old friend, Daniel Lanois, stopped by to record a live set the other night. It's hard to properly express the gratitude we feel toward Dan and his band for bringing their amazing talent to the Mule Spinner.
Join us this coming Saturday August 24th for a special evening with dub poet, Michael St George. See comments for ticket link.

Rising Hedons are: BRADLEY TINDALL (guitar & vocals), TIM TURVEY (double bass) and MATT WELBANKS (Violin)
Rising Hedons are South-Western Ontario’s original psychedelic folk experience. Founded in Taichung City, Taiwan in 2007 by bandleader Bradley Tindall, the ensemble has been heralded as a genre-twisting phenomenon by media and fans alike, and have performed hundreds of concerts all over the world; from the Yi-Lan Folk Festival in Taiwan, to the Bowery Poetry Club in New York & Spring Scream in Kenting, Taiwan. The Taipei Times proclaimed that "It’s hard not to admire the indie musician ethic of Bradley Tindall and his band Rising Hedons." and Highway 11 magazine declared that "Bradley sings with a passion known to few. The audience is awed. This is no ordinary gig, no ordinary band.”
Equal parts thoughtful storytelling and reckless abandon, Rising Hedon’s live shows are a truly captivating experience - ranging from the mesmerizing to the exhilarating, and all points in between - and they have expertly captured that unique blend of musicianship and passion in their ongoing series of live-off-the-floor videos filmed by the acclaimed cinematographer Mitch Fillion of Southern Souls fame. Their unique brand of entertainment fuses soaring gypsy violin, earth-shattering percussive guitar & the unpredictable soul of a Rock & Roll band.
