What started as a hobby, became a life-long passion! Jim & Marie Hopkins established Holiday Ranch on Crooked Creek in 1960. As their 1967 centennial project they purchased Moose Mountain Hall at Jimmy Wotherspoon’s estate sale. The hall, with it’s beautiful maple hardwood floor, was relocated to Holiday Ranch, via Garrington Bridge, the following year.
The Hub became known as the hub of square dancing & round dancing in Central Alberta. Wandering Squares annually booked Holiday Ranch for the July long weekend, with over 100 enthusiastic families arriving with their tents, campers & trailers for dancing, trail riding, & walks along Crooked Creek.
The extension for indoor plumbing was added in 1971.
Holiday Ranch summer weekend dance camps began in 1972, with Jim calling square dances, & Marie & Jim teaching round dancing. Guest callers & instructors added variety, as did Clogging & Swing Dances in later years. Following Jim’s untimely death, Bev (Hopkins) with her husband Phil Hansen ran the dance camps for Marie until Phil passing in 2009, at which time friends continued organizing dance camps.
Jim & Marie danced beautifully & joyfully shared their talent & love of dancing as wholesome, family.
The rich history of Holiday Ranch continued to open the gates for many different events. Jim & Marie's son Kent assumed ownership of Holiday Ranch in 2018, he along with Lise will continue with the traditions of Holiday Ranch and help share in this rich history.
