Good news - I harvested the first little handful of winter tulips on this chilly January day! 2025 blooms have begun 😊. There is something very special about harvesting fresh flowers with snow outside and a fire in the fireplace.

It will be another week before they really get going and the Tulip subscription begins but I will thoroughly enjoy each little handful I pick until then!

I have a lot to say about tulips and winter growing over the next year but for now let's just savour these fresh January blooms 🤍

Tis the season for perusing seed catalogues and dreaming big for the 2025 gardening season - don't let a small growing space shrink those dreams! You would be surprised at the number of blooms you can grow per square foot of ground with the above tricks. Happy seed cataloging!

Creating beautiful bouquets for your table can be effortless when you have the right mix of flowers at your fingertips. When growing in a tight space, I would recommend the following for each the cool and warm seasons:
*1-3 types of focal flowers
*2-3 types of spike
*3+ types of secondary
*3+ types of filler
Then look about for foliage in your perennial and herb gardens.
Besides creating beautiful bouquets, a variety of flowers in the garden creates a biodiverse ecosystem in your garden which will attract pollinators and other beneficial microbes, insects and wildlife to your garden and that will be the biggest win!

Planning that cutting garden part 2! Considering colour - not going to lie this was something I didn't always pay as much attention to as I should have when I started out. When you are flipping through seed catalogues you see a lot of flowers that just grab you and look fun to grow or unique colours that catch your eye. However when you put them all together sometimes they lack cohesiveness and its certainly not the end of the world - you are going to have a beautiful garden but it can make creating bouquets you love a little more difficult. I don't know how many times part way through the season I wish I had more of a particular colour scheme or I have a flower in a pretty colour that really doesn't fit in with anything else! So it's definitely something to consider when choosing seeds and tubers etc.
I have a few palettes I tend to stick with and I find they all fit into the season better at different times. I love the pastels in spring and then get brighter over the summer and then find myself getting a little moodier in fall which actually really is combing a couple of my earlier season palettes.
Experimenting and playing with colour is one of my favourite parts of working with flowers so it certainly isn't something to stress over, just to consider 😊

Daydreaming about gardens filled with beautiful flowers and a vase of them in each room of your house all summer long? It may be awhile until we can really get our hands dirty here in the northern hemisphere, but you can plan now for a bloom filled summer!

When it comes to a cutting garden a little planning can go a long way in terms of giving you a longer season to enjoy and a great mix of ingredients for your bouquets.

Over my next few posts, I am going to help you plan out your cutting garden whether you are planting in a few pots on your patio or a large garden space.

Grab a calendar, your seed catalogues a pen and a cup of tea or coffee and let's get you started on the 2025 garden season!

How do you feel about January? In this stage of life I actually enjoy it - in our house it is busy with skiing and snowboarding and night skiing is one my favourite things to do. I enjoy a bit of quieter time to catch up on things around the house and work on hobbies like crochet and baking and doing a bit of reading and planning for the year ahead.

I also love my little seedling nursery and indoor tulip "garden" - they are a little oasis of freshness while the rest of the gardens lie sleeping.

I made this little "cloud" before Christmas and I think I will keep it up all winter - I love the way it catches the light in the evening.

Mechanics for cloud: chicken wire

Ingredients of cloud:
* dried cress
* dried baby's breath
* dried hydrangea
* dried hops
* bunny tail grass
* dried citrus slices

The first seeds of 2025 were planted today (Jan 3rd)! I did a pretty detailed stories series detailing what I am starting and how I start my seeds if you are interested. Here are the cliff notes:

* I divide everything I grow into either warm season or cool season - right now I am only focused on cool season

*cool season is the early season beginning while night time freezing temps are still happening

*cool flowers thrive in cool temps and some shut down innthe heat

*I use my tunnels to help give some protection so cool flowers start entering the ground here in late Feb or early March

*anything I planted today needs to spend a minimum of 8 weeks in the seed room before I transplant out

*planting seeds at the "right" time is critical for strong healthy transplant that thrive once in the ground

*I use plug trays and seed starting mix and reuse my trays and inserts year after year

*read your seed packets - they have lots of useful info for planning and successful germination 😉

Well that's it for now but tomorrow I bring the first round of tulips into the grow space which means the first blooms of 2025 are just 3 weeks away -Yay!!

Happy New Year! I hope you all have enjoyed the holiday season and are feeling ready for 2025. My family and I have had a wonderful week in the snow reflecting fondly on 2024 and what a great year it was. As a family it was our busiest year yet but it was also one filled with adventures, fun, a few quiet moments and memories that will last a lifetime.

I have spent some time over the holidays putting together my garden plans for 2025 - so what can you expect from LBB in the coming year?

*armfuls of beautiful locally grown blooms

*three subscriptions featuring the best of what Kamloops can offer in flowers

*an abundance of Spring blooms

*loads of dahlias and other late summer favourites

*less event work and workshops

*more Grab n Go Bouquets

*more wearable flowers

*a Deck the Halls workshop in November

Over the last number of years I have gained a lot of knowledge about growing and working with flowers and it is something I would like to share more of this year but I haven't quite decided on the best avenue to do this but stay tuned...it's something I am working on 😉.

Wishing each and every one of you a year ahead filled with good health and happy adventures and peaceful moments in between. Thanks for following along 😊

The Biggest Thank-You!
Over the past month, between holiday workshops, meeting people randomly in coffee shops or on the ski trails, I have run into many of my flower subscribers, brides and friends. I have had the opportunity to hear stories about how my flowers have impacted their lives and the events they helped to celebrate or commemorate and honestly it's been touching.
Changing from a mix of veggies and flowers to all flowers was a tough decision for me and sometimes when the world feels crazy I wonder to myself, is there really a need for flowers? Hearing your stories makes me see the smiles they can bring and the happiness they can spread and that's a pretty special feeling.
Growing has its ups and downs and isn't always easy, but I do love growing and sharing the flowers and I am truly grateful you all enjoy them as well.
So as 2024 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who purchased my flowers or attended a workshop over the past year - I truly appreciate each and every one of you.
Flowers might look a little different in 2025 but I am planning hard and I am excited to share many more blooms with you all ❤️

While Christmas 2024 is not complete yet, I am already looking toward the 2025 holidays as a lot of the planning for winter workshops and offerings actually happens now!

Running my wreath workshops over the past few years has been a lot of fun and I am thankful for how well attended they have all been and I have enjoyed seeing them on people's doors and gateways as I have driven by over the last few weeks!

In 2025 I am thinking of changing things up again and offering just one workshop called "Deck the Halls" where we create a more advanced wreath, make a garland and a centerpiece for our homes all in one afternoon! I am also considering a small 3 week Christmas subscription where each week you get another piece of fresh decor for your homes.

I would love to hear thoughts on this as I will be ordering all my supplies over the next couple of weeks.

Happy Solstice! The shortest day has arrived which for me is always a cue to take time to start reflecting on the year that was and take time to rest and rejuvenate while the days are short.

I did my last delivery of the year to Amplified yesterday, wrapped the final Christmas presents this morning and readied the house for Christmas.

Just after New Years I will sow the first seeds of 2025 and bring tulip bulbs into the grow room for the first blooms of the season but for the next couple of weeks, it is time to focus on family, fun, good food and the festive season! Lots of days outside and cozy nights by the fire.

Wishing you all a happy and peaceful solstice evening.

Sad endings and new beginnings...

Our ducks have become a bit of a feature on here and anyone who picks up at LBB always says hello to the ducks as they are never ones to miss out on the action and are full of personality and cheeky "commentary".

While we do our best to keep all of our animals safe from predators, sometimes new predators arrive. On Friday night a raccoon entered our property and got our sweet Chocolate Mocha. To our knowledge we haven't had any raccoons in our place to date but do know there have been some in the area.

We were all very sad to find Chocolate gone yesterday and his partner in crime Harriet was devastated as I am not sure they were ever more than 3 feet apart at any given moment. Ducks are very social animals and don't do well on their own, so we decided we better get him a companion. My good friend came to the rescue and provided two new companions for Harriet.

We will truly miss that little brown duck waddling at full speed across the pasture to say hello every time someone came home and his forever dirty beak as he was an amazing forager. I will also miss all of the shenanigans between he and our dog Arlo as they were very good friends too.

We welcome Banana & Pineapple to the gardens and I am sure you will all get acquainted with them soon on here as ducks are truly entertaining little souls who love to be in the action. Harriet is happy to have ducks but also still not completely sure he's ready to share his space (he has the worst case of little man syndrome ever!)

The hardest part of animal husbandry is letting them go. We have revamped the duck run and hopefully it is raccoon proof. To Chocolate - thanks for many smiles and hopefully you are getting your fill of worms and Roly pollies ❤️

"It's coming on Christmas..."

The busyness of the festive season has definitely hit me and our calendar today! I spent a couple of quiet hours in my studio this morning creating holiday centerpieces and I truly love them ❤️

Now, for the rest of the afternoon my kitchen will look like a tornado hit as I prepare a bunch of freezer food to take to a biathlon race next weekend and use over the holidays. I love to cook but over the holidays I like to be doing things with family more so I have learned some great dishes that freeze well that I can prep ahead of time and the just heat up on the fly. Does anyone else have any make ahead recipes they love to have over the holidays? I am always looking for some fresh ideas 😊

The final offering of 2024 - "Woodland Centerpiece"

This unique centerpiece will feature a glorious amaryllis that should bloom just in time for Christmas in elegant white, merlot or candy cane striped. Along with the amaryllis, tucked into the moss is a handmade aspen candle holder. The centerpiece is surrounded with locally foraged greens, dried florals, nuts, cones and dried citrus. While I don't usually add anything I don't grow to my arrangements, you might just find some fresh magnolia leaves or eucalyptus popped in there as well.

Pick-up of these centerpieces will be December 20th at Amplifed or at Little Blue Barn. You can preorder yours today at https://my-site-107892-107250.square.site/product/amaryllis-woodland-centerpiece/217
