VALLEY FIRST NEW YORK NEW YEARS EVENT POSTPONED TO 2022

(December 21st, 2021 Kelowna, BC) - Following the announcement by the Province of B.C. introducing further restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of COVID, Kelowna’s annual "Valley First New York New Years" celebration has been cancelled for 2021.
Scheduled for December 31st in Stuart Park from 5:00 – 9:00 pm, the event will now be held in December of 2022.

"Well, we were hopeful and planned a fun, family celebration for our community on New Year’s Eve but it was not to be. COVID had other plans,” confirms Renata Mills, Executive Director of Festivals Kelowna. “After cancelling last year, we’ve been holding our breath this last week as we saw Omicron expand across the Country. Even though our event is held outdoors and we built in some COVID safety measures, given the really large numbers that usually attend it wouldn’t be responsible or appropriate to proceed as planned.”

One of the few all-ages friendly New Years Eve events in Kelowna, ‘Valley First New York New Years’ is free to attend and typically features a variety of activities including skating on the outdoor ice rink, live bands on 2 stages, games and interactive demonstrations in the “Kid’s Snow Zone”, SWAG courtesy of sponsors, food trucks, and fireworks at 9:00 to ring in the “early” New Year.

“Despite this disappointing announcement, we again thank our sponsors and partners for their tremendous support,” explains Mills. “I hope you will join me in acknowledging the efforts of the City of Kelowna, Valley First, Government of British Columbia, Kiwanis Club of Kelowna Downtown Kelowna New Horizon Productions and Kelowna's Move who stepped up to bring the community together”.

Hi folks. As you have heard by now, the Province just announced this afternoon a return to restrictions related to public gatherings and events. The new PHO is in place from this Sunday at midnight until January 31st, 2022.

Based on Dr. Henry's comment that "New Years Eve parties are suspended no matter the size”, I am in discussions with City of Kelowna to determine how this will affect our event and the most appropriate move forward.

We aim to have a decision made by early next week and will make an announcement via our social media channels and website. Hi folks. Just a quick update that things are looking good for holding our annual family-friendly event on December 31st in Jim Stuart Park. We are working with our key partners First and City of Kelowna to develop safe yet fun plans to include live music, games, fireworks, and more.
