Hello sunshine! I’ve been hibernating for awhile now, how about you? Although we’re still smack in the middle of winter, the sunny days are lasting a little bit longer and the cold will soon have a little less bite. We’ve made it through January, friends, and soon the world will be pulsing with colour and life again! Yay!!!

I love this time of the year for all of it’s graceful decay. I put this garden grown euonymus on a grapevine wreath in the middle of summer and hung it outside. Since then it has bleached to a grey white and morphed into a cool sculptural shape. With the addition of a couple of deep pink hydrangeas for colour, I think it looks great!

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely bride and groom, Melanie and Angel, when they modeled for a styled wedding shoot I did last October. I was honoured that they chose me to do the flowers for their wedding for real this past weekend. I also loved that they wanted to include as much rich colour as possible. They really chose the right time of year to make that happen!

Now that I am working with flowers "professionally" I don't tend to have bouquets for myself. I just have lots of "vase life tests". But sometimes they turn out pretty too! This one even made it into a cool vase I got from .collective

I don't think this apple tree blossomed quite so gloriously last year. This photo doesn't really do it justice!

The beautiful bonus of my flower foraging adventures this weekend were these marvelous morels! Probably the first foragable crop I ever learned to gather, they are just as magical to find today as when I was 5.

Happy Mother's day! The only items in this bouquet that were not foraged were the lilac from my garden and, fittingly, a spike of lovely, pink, manchurian cherry blossom from my mother's garden. Thank you mum, for everything you do and for helping me make my dreams come true. 🌸🌿💗

I didn't really intend to become to become a flower grower, but what with a global flower shortage and local farmers oversubscribed, whatcha gonna do? I am by no means a gardening expert but one rule I've learned and follow to the best of my ability is: Do It Now. Think your plants might need some water? Do it. Now. Suddenly remember that the time to start a certain seedling is fast approaching? Do it now. So, when a neighbour advertised they had free phlox from established plants they had just divided, I grabbed the sumach by the staghorns and got some roots in the ground!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times! A carpet of beautiful blue scilla. And the dreaded, unrelenting garlic mustard... and... is that poisonous parsley? Say it ain't so!!! Any guesses as to the plant those deeply cut leaves belong to? Is it friend or foe?

Aaaaand.... I had my back turned to build my flat pack VegTrug mini nursery to get these babies to safety as soon as possible, and she decided to sit in a seed tray! Ironic that I named my cat Petal and she is intent on destroying all plant life! Thank goodness she sat on the ones that haven't sprouted yet. I still have some hope.
