Dream:
a cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal.

I have always been a dreamer. When I was little I dreamed of one day becoming a teacher and owning a bake shop in the summers while I was off. As a young teen, I would give my mom a list of ingredients that I needed from the store and bake for our family and mess up our kitchen (some things never change). As an adult who achieved my goal of being a teacher, I would bring food themed activities and cooking experiences into the classroom. Recipes with fractions to teach math and cooking with my students with intellectual needs as a more hands on way of learning. I loved cooking with my grandma as a young child but with age came an increased love of cooking, watching food bring family and friends together, watching my own children get excited for a meal or helping with picking different fresh foods at the grocery store or enjoying a market as much as I do. The JOY of preparing food lingered throughout the years to a point where the dream of owning a cafe got more difficult to hush.

Covid hit, my dad passed and something in me changed. I realized I had been living my life with fear in the background. I think this came to the forefront after losing my dad, because he didn’t. He loved life, he lived it to the fullest. He took calculated risks and he took some that weren’t so calculated. His life was full of adventure. Everyone always tells me I am just like him, but I differed greatly in that I lived in fear. We aren’t talking my fear or heights or fear of needles (I still struggle with those things) but the kind of fear that leaves a dark cloud over you just enough to hold you back. I’m a perfectionist (big surprise, I know), not in the way of needing everything to be perfect around me. I like a little chaos, after all I have 4 boys! My perfectionism is more being the best I can be, striving to do better and be better all the time. This isn’t always healthy, I know it’s not and it’s a working progress but I realized that this ideal was holding me back from living out a dream I long desired and the older I got the less I wanted to live within the confines of fear.

Fast forward to covid where cooking (and my family) were all I had and some version of teaching that didn’t feel much like teaching at all. I went to Blake (my Facebook famous husband) and said, I really want to buy the local bakery. We explored it but it didn’t feel just right. We then decided that I would bake from home, as a way to help people through the monotony of covid, to bring them a little joy through a home cooked meal. It took off and 6 months later I was standing in a brick and mortar store, living out the dream and wondering how the heck it all happened?

Life returned to normal, as normal as it could at least. I had to make a decision to leave my career as a teacher, the original dream and commit to growing the bakery or return to teaching and shelf my dream of owning the bakery and cafe until the opportunity came up again, later in life.

I loved teaching and this was not a decision I took lightly. With friends and family split between supporting this choice and feeling like I was crazy for giving up something stable and valued, I decided to turn to only Blake and make the decision that was right for us and our children. This is the part of the story where you can envision Blake riding in on a horse with armour or something like that, he said “I know you loved teaching but the system was tough for you to do it your way. It brought you joy but not like this does.” And with that reassurance, I resigned and was one step further in my mission to not let guilt and fear rule!

Why do I tell you this? I don’t know, partially because I want you to know if you are scared, I’m here. I’m no different than you. Partially because I think dreaming and chasing dreams is becoming a lost art. Living your authentic life is rare. It’s all trends and fads and a total lack of originality. This makes me sad. Part of it is because rumours or perceptions, which I am certain exist. I have learned that some people are going think this is the dumbest risk and my live videos are annoying, and it all must be an act. It’s not, I promise, I’m not perfect and am who I am. Ask the poor girls who have to work with my hyper, disorganized ass daily.

But mostly, it’s because, if you made it this far in this post, I wanted to thank you for being a part of the dream. I wanted to ask you during our slow months to continue to support my dream (and other small businesses run by dreamers). Growing this dream requires your business to help push and pay for Reno’s of our new space. We will continue to work hard to stock freezer meals and provide lunches and work with you on your special events but honestly, we need a little boost right now. One final push to launch us into the next step of the dream, where hopefully I can support so many of yours.

After all, I said I was a dreamer. I dream of building a space, where you can dream while sitting at our tables.
