Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed in the 1500s by African and Indigenous slaves in Brazil as a form of self-defence from their oppressors. It is marked by its agile and tricky movements that may be executed anywhere from an upside-down position to a gravity-defying kick. Capoeira develops mental balance and physical conditioning. Grupo Axé Capoeira was created in Recife in 1982 by Mestre Barrão, with headquarter in Vancouver. The group continues to flourish as one of the world’s leading Capoeira organizations in over 20 countries worldwide. Grupo Axé Capoeira is renowned for its promotion of the history, music, art, and culture of Brazil and for its interactive and educational demonstrations

Capoeira is often seen as a martial art disguised as a dance, but in reality it encompasses much more. It is a harmony of forces, that gives power, flexibility, endurance, and self-discovery through an uplifting cultural experience. Capoeira is a positive experience which welcome all types of individuals of all ages, background, and levels, and all play together in mutual cooperation and respect.

Still feeling the axé from last week’s Batizado e Troca de Corda!
This was the first event of its kind here in Kingston, and it filled our community with the rhythm, movement, and energy of capoeira.

A huge shout-out to all our students, families, and friends who came out all weekend — participating in the workshops, sharing their energy at the showcase, and helping in so many ways. We’re so grateful for your support and spirit!

Thank you to all our incredible guests who led the workshops, rodas, and music. This event wouldn’t have been possible without you.
A special thanks to our grand master, Mestre Barrao , for supporting this event and trusting our teacher and leader, Graduado Baiano, to continue representing Axé Capoeira in Ontario.

We’re deeply grateful to all of our visiting teachers for their guidance, inspiration, and dedication: Mestre Testa Kevin Brett , Mestrando Osso Duro, Professora Onça Axé Capoeira Comox Valley, Professor Faísca, and Instrutora Formiguinha.

Finally, a heartfelt thank-you to all our supporters and sponsors who helped make this event possible: Paradise Construction, Ballytobin Foundation, RMGE Contracting Inc. , Big Sky Dog Centre, Koketsu Kai, Tiger's Den Martial Arts, Rampant Kitchen , , Juniper Cafe, and ABAFA.
