Ours is a church with a rich, progressive, and continuing history of welcoming all in the name of Jesus Christ. We feel honoured to house so many community organizations and events in our grand sandstone building

on the corner of 4th Avenue and 11th Street South, but Southminster is so much more than the building that shelters us from the strong southern Alberta winds. We are a place of unconditional acceptance, appreciation, respect, and the sharing of God’s light and love. Southminster is its people, and it is in them that we find our spiritual home. The United Church of Canada was created from a union of several Christian denominations in 1925, who came together in order to serve a specifically Canadian context. Throughout its history it has embraced people of all backgrounds and orientations. It was the first denomination in North America to ordain women to the ministry in 1936, as well as the first to ordain LGBTQ2IA+ persons to ministry in 1988. Today, we are committed to becoming an inter-cultural and anti-racist Church. Please know that whoever you are, and wherever you are in your faith journey, there is a place for you here. As we join together at Southminster as a family of faith, we seek connection to God, the source of all life. Drawing upon the ancient wisdom we find in our sacred text, the Bible, we look to Jesus as our teacher and model for living. Worshipping God who is expressed as Creator, Christ, and Spirit, we receive forgiveness and love. As a community of faith we enjoy one another’s company and seldom turn down an opportunity to work, play, and eat together. We extend to you an invitation to join us here, where with God’s help – and yours – we can continue to live out our motto: “Open hearts, open minds, open doors.”

This month’s q***r film night will be on the 22nd, rather than on the 15th.

The film is 1946, a documentary that follows the story of researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a mistranslation of the Bible in 1946.

We’re partnering with McKillop United Church, Southminster United Church, Lethbridge, and Lethbridge Public Library in putting on this event.

Given how the weaponization of Christian scripture has hurt so many of us, hopefully this is a film we can see a lot of people at.

The United Church of Canada marks with deep respect the passing of The Honourable Murray Sinclair. We give thanks for his life, for his service to Indigenous communities across Turtle Island, and for the challenge he put to Canada as a whole.

Senator Sinclair was dedicated to achieving justice for Indigenous peoples. He did this as a mentor, as a lawyer and judge, and as the Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. It was as Commissioner that The United Church of Canada knew him best. He pushed us to tell the truth, and to act with integrity in the TRC process. In so doing, he helped to shape the vision of the reconciling and anti-racist church that we aspire to be.

As Commissioner, he heard many difficult things. This must have been a heavy load, even for a man with such broad shoulders. He also spoke very clearly and directly of the obligations that Canada, the churches, and other institutions owe to those we have harmed, and continue to harm. He was encouraging of the difficult work of reconciliation, saying most notably, “We have described for you a mountain. We have shown you the path to the top. We call upon you to do the climbing.”

As Murray Sinclair now journeys back to the Creator, we send prayers for him, his children, and all his family. We include in those prayers our intention, as individuals and as a church, to continue the path he has marked out for us.
