It's an interesting time of the season. We've had a few nights that have dropped below 0, but things are still hanging on. There have even been a few surprises (talking to you, cup and saucer vine!). Most of the blooms look beautiful from afar, but have many imperfections up close. All that really means is that I, and the neighbourhood, get to enjoy the blooms for as long as they last.

I did some cutting last night. With it being Thanksgiving and my studio team all battling cold and flu season (myself included), I forgot my bucket of fresh cuts in my vehicle. I could easily have brought it in at the end of the day, but we are closed for the long weekend, and... With the end of the season so close, I thought it would be nice for them to be enjoyed for as long as possible. And, sometimes in the rush of, well, ALL the seasons, I forget to remember how amazing my careers are. To grow things. To share their beauty with others. To have that beauty highlight all kinds of moments, each with their own importance.

This beauty greeted me upon my arrival home tonight. I wish I could say that the words out of my mouth were of admiration, but instead they were, "Are you f*cking kidding me? 8 months and you're going to give me a bloom THE NIGHT BEFORE FROST?!"

I suppose this Diva wanted a fashionably late arrival.

Cup and Saucer vine.
Beautiful, but it may be a pass for me next season.

It never stops.

Cover crop in the large anemone/ranunculus bed has been sown, and now it's time to get some late summer seeding started to take the place of other crops as they fade.

I've definitely felt like I've been floundering these past few weeks. Unexpected changes (are somehow expected but still take you by surprise) have definitely slowed me down on the patch front, as my focus has had to be at . But there have been some high points. The sunflowers have started blooming and they are so gorgeous (pictures to come). I seem to only have thrips and some weird small beetles that attacked the remnants of my stock. Which is FINE, as I was about to dig them up anyways, but still. When they come, they come in strong.

I'm not sure what the coming weeks will bring. Temperatures are supposed to drop into the low twenties, with some nighttime temps being anywhere between 6-10 degrees. The dahlias have finally started to bud and bloom...

Is it weird to be tired, but still in awe and already planning for next season? What weird, new addiction have I gotten myself into?

P.s. My hands and feet are always dirty these days.

Some surprises on the patch tonight!

We had some wicked wind storms after some direct sowing in the spring. I waited with the hope that things were left to germinate but it seemed like a pretty barren bed. So I added some different seeds in as well as some other plants (can't let a whole bed go to waste!), only to find... THESE! I've been doing the whole, "are you a w**d? Or are you a seedling?" for a month now. And I'm happy to report that they are SEEDLING!

Photos in order: delicate Venus' Navelwort (looks very similar to the pure white forget me nots!), Tw**dia, Godetia, a surprise pansy hiding in the foxglove, Foxglove bud!!, Delphinium, and poppies!

Tw**dia, Foxglove and Delphinium were not surprises but it's so nice to see them finally starting to bud out!

😮‍💨 What a month July has been! Today was my first full day off from the floral studio since it started, which means I have been going full force in the garden trying to play catch up.

The Anemone and Ranunculus beds have been turned. So now it's just a matter of tidying them up and preparing for cover crops and some mid summer newbies.

There was also an insane amount of w**ding to take place. Luckily not much in the actual flower beds, but in surrounding areas around the property.

Thrips have made their debut, and the aphids are stubborn AF. But I've been trying some new concoctions so fingers crossed we are going to see some progress on that battle front. Good news is the lady bugs have also arrived and are becoming just as plentiful! I'm hoping we will consciously join forces and triumph.

In the meantime, I am swooning over the first blooms in the Dahlia patch, and the champagne double holly hocks are just GIVING. Not to mention the zinnias (who I just love for their bright cheerful appearance and sturdiness).

I feel like I've just done about 1000 squats between last night and today, but it feels good to be back in the garden.

Tomorrow we fertilize and do some planting. 🫶

When Whitney said, "I wanna feel the heat with somebody." ...Yeah, I don't think this is what she meant.

High 30 temps mean the Anemones and Ranunculus are quickly slowing down, so I'm trying to cut as many as possible in the coming days. I'm so sad to say goodbye to their pretty faces. But, it's also been nice to see the growth on those heat loving plants who have been patiently waiting for their time to shine.

It's officially Anemone season at the Patch!
Anemones were the first to bloom, but seemed to go through a dormant period with all the weird, early weather. But now? Now it's like they're telling the ranunculus to take a load off -- they've got it covered from here...
