The Root Cellar

The Root Cellar Food is political. Thanks for supporting The Root Cellar Organic Restaurant 2012-2020 and The Root Cellar Upstairs Events 2023-2025 :) Established in 2012.

The Root Cellar is a farm to fork organic restaurant located in the Old East Village in London, Ontario. We serve all-organic lunch, dinner and Saturday brunch, focusing on seasonality and local procurement of ingredients. Brought to you by the crew behind On The Move Organics (London's finest local & organic produce distribution company, specializing in bike delivery and farmers' market retail),

The Root Cellar grew out of a desire to forge relationships between London's rural food producers and urban food consumers. With The Root Cellar, we hope to find a happy medium between food politics and pleasure, so come explore what it means to be rooted in a local economy, a local food system, and a vibrant and resilient community.

**The Root Cellar Organic Cafe Statement of Intention:
We believe that food is political, that the choices we make about food--what we choose to eat and who we choose to support by doing so--resonate through our community, our economy, and our planet. At the foundation of this project is a commitment to invigorating our community, discovering the plenitude of our local foodshed, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, and working cooperatively.

✨✨Bry Webb & Cots, March 28!✨✨ Bry first played a hometown show here at The Root Cellar nearly 10 years ago, and now he's back -- this time, with Steph Yates' mesmerizing solo project, Cots. Whether you've been a Bry fan since The Constantines days, or you've been following his and Steph's recent community-building events in Guelph, please join us for this incredible evening of beautiful music in the .

About Bry Webb:
About six years ago, Bry Webb (The Constantines) stopped playing and releasing music entirely, sold instruments and recording equipment, and convinced himself that he was done.

In early 2023 his personal life exploded. In the process of dealing with that, he started writing music again and recording at home. His therapist said he needed to figure out how to ask for, and accept, help from others. He sent early recordings of songs to friends made across twenty-five years of music-making - many folks he hadn’t connected with in years - and asked if they’d contribute anything to the songs. People came through in ways that overwhelmed him. He felt incredibly cared for.

Now, surrounding the release of a new record that came out later that year, Run With Me (Idée Fixe), Webb has been performing live again, often accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Steph Yates, with shows as far flung as Haida Gwaii, Halifax, Dawson City, Mexico City, and Brittany, France. The album, and these performances, are all about death, transition, asking for help, and finding hope.

About Cots:
Cots is the solo project of Canadian composer, singer, and guitarist Steph Yates. Blending elements of bossa nova, folk, jazz, and classical against a modern art backdrop, Cots’s subtly unconventional compositions and poetics permeate her debut record Disturbing Body, produced by Sandro Perri. During the pandemic, Yates teamed up with producer Olivier Fairfield to create the otherworldly and off-kilter follow-up EP Moonlit Building. Yates tours regularly with accompaniment from multi-instrumentalist Bry Webb.

is a forward-looking folk duo.
Braiding organic vocal harmonies with organ, accordion, singing saw, and guitars, Tragedy Ann’s arrangements are as delicate as they are driving. Their concerts emanate “…the honesty and enthusiasm of people who can’t help but create and perform.” (Jon Farmer, Georgian Bay Roots).

With their latest album "Heirlooms" (May 2022), Liv Cazzola and Braden Phelan issue a call for deeper connection with each other and with the natural world. The answer to this call is reflected both in the collaborative creation process and the meaningful ways in which "Heirlooms" is being shared. Setting these intentions rooted them and provided the insight needed to nourish the project and create something lasting.

Tragedy Ann has performed in Europe, the United States, and across Canada at such venues as the National Arts Centre, Celtic Connections, Haliburton Folk Society, Egersund Visefestival, Blue Skies Music Festival, Clonakilty International Guitar Festival, Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival, and Hillside Festival.
Hillary Watson is a singer-songwriter and multi-disciplinary creative.
She is a classically trained musician and a member of the London-based 3-part harmony folk group, The Pairs. Influenced by a wide array of music throughout her life, from folk to rock to musical theatre, Hillary's music is a blur of genres. Percussive and thought-provoking, her words of honest human experience are relatable.

Part of our FALL FOLK FRIDAYS: a cozy concert series. Check out our other concerts on Friday Nov 8 (Tragedy Ann & Hillary Watson) & Friday Nov 29 (Zachary Lucky) ;)

"Alternative indie folk singer Rory Taillon has a voice that needs to be heard. Since 2012, Rory has released three albums and two EPs with his fourth full-length album, Now It’s Quiet, out August 20th.

Trained as a classical singer from a young age, his years of study are evident in the power and control that he has over his voice. He uses his warm guitar tone, haunting lyrics, dynamic voice, layers of looping, and the thumping of his kick drum to take the audience on a journey through his set from exhilarating highs to emotional lows.

'Wish You Would Stay' is the second single from his [newest] LP. Not one to shy away from difficult subjects, his music confronts loss, grief, and the struggles of mental health issues."

- Jenna Melanson, Canadian Beats

🌙Friends, please join us for an evening with Zachary Lucky on Nov 29! Tickets at the link in bio.

Canadian roots troubadour returns to London with his sixth full length recording "The Wind" for an intimate show at The Root Cellar.

"Zachary Lucky is unapologetically old-school country, armed with a husky, baritone voice. The Grandson of Canadian Country Music pioneer Smilin' Johnnie Lucky, he often receives comparisons to songwriters such as Gordon Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson. He sings of Canadian places and people as knowingly as he might Townes Van Zandt or the Rio Grande. It's a relatable show on many levels, and conjures universal feelings that have passed through our collective timelines. Already hailed as a master storyteller by outlets ranging from No Depression to The Globe and Mail, Zachary is becoming a legend in his own right and has safely reserved his spot at the table of Canadian roots royalty."
