The Markham Cenotaph at Veteran’s Square stands as a memorial to the men and women who gave their lives in service. The family history of Thomas Tomlinson, whose name was originally recorded on Unionville Cenotaph, has proven a mystery to historians for more than 35 years. His name does not appear on any service record.
George Thomas “Tommy” was born in Markham in 1923 to George Ivor and Mary Whylle Tomlinson. He enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II. Research shows Tommy serving as a Fire Fighter / Water Tender aboard the SS El Occidente, a civilian cargo ship deployed on the Murmansk Run to supply Russian Allies. Convoy PQ17, an ill-fated voyage on April 13, 1942, suffered heavy losses with only 11 of 34 ships reaching port. A German U-boat fired upon their ship and struck its engine. 21 crew members, including Tommy, were lost at sea.
We now know of Thomas’ identity thanks to a friend of his brother, Harold Tomlinson. In handling the late Harold’s estate, they reached out to the Markham Museum concerning the possible donation of a 1950s Centennial commemorative coin. The mystery of the unrecorded Thomas was swiftly resolved with the assistance of Melanie Cardullo who confirmed the brothers’ relation.
Rest in peace, George Thomas Tomlinson (1923-1942). Your community honors and remembers you.

During the Second World War, more than 600 Canadians of Chinese descent volunteered to serve. Despite risking their lives, they did not have the right to vote.

Rifleman Kew Dock Yip (1906-2001) joined The Queens Own Rifles in 1942, where he met fellow reservist and law student Irving Himel. After graduating in 1945, they formed ‘The Committee for the Repeal of the Chinese Immigration Act’ which successfully repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act and granted Chinese Canadians citizenship and the right to vote.

Lieutenant William Lore (1909-2012) tried to join the Royal Canadian Navy but was rejected three times because of his ethnicity. His enlistment was finally accepted in 1943 on the strength of his specialized skills as a wireless operator (radio). He became the first naval officer of Chinese descent in the British Commonwealth. In 1945, Lieutenant Lore was the first allied officer to enter Hong Kong, helping to liberate Canadian, British and Hong Kong prisoners.

Wishing you a Happy Halloween!

Remember, kids will be out tonight for trick-or-treating. Be alert and drive safely, obey traffic lights and stop signs, look both ways, and make sure no one is in your blind spot before moving.

If you are taking your little ones out, remember to wear reflective clothing and use a flashlight to be seen.
