Following up on yesterday’s post, let’s talk about some more next steps once you’ve completed an informational interview and/or a job shadowing:

- Leverage your new connection

You can leverage your new connection by inquiring about new opportunities or conversations if they change their role or company. You can also ask them about their network and if there is anyone they can connect you with who could be a great addition to your network.

- Post on LinkedIn about your experience

Did you have an interesting talk with someone during an informational interview? Did you have an outstanding or curious experience during a job shadowing opportunity? Share it! You can post on a blog if you have one or on LinkedIn to share your takeaways and any advice or suggestions you may have. This information can be useful to some people in your network and increase visibility and engagement. You can always contact us about your experience; we will pass it on to our community!

- Find courses and newsletters that would be a good fit for your pursuits

An essential next step is to ensure you’re not stopping there. If you are interested in the role or company you’ve discovered, find their newsletter or others to help expand your knowledge. Take some free or paid online courses to upskill and ensure you’ll be a great fit when applying. Sometimes, finding volunteering positions or contracts can also help you gain adequate experience to excel in your career.

- Engage in more informational interviews/job shadowing

It might be a good idea to seek out more than one opportunity to compare your experiences. This will also help you expand your network more quickly!

Let’s chat about how to make the most of newly formed contacts/experiences after information interviews or job shadowing:
Share your experience and give back
Actively reflecting on your experience can help you gain some valuable insights. Consider making a LinkedIn post and sharing your experience.
Write a Thank You note
Although this may come across as old fashioned or unnecessary, it is a kind gesture that may benefit you by helping you stand out. If you take the time to create a template that you can then adapt to each person, it will save you time in the long run and keep you fresh in your new contact’s mind.
Periodically check in with you new connection(s)
It may seem difficult to manage a new professional relationship, but sharing relevant information, opportunities, or contacts with your new acquaintance will help strengthen the relationship and help it last beyond your first interaction.

If your goal is to secure a job shadowing opportunity, these questions are still valid and can either be considered as you go about shadowing the individual, or you could ask them for some time to ask your questions. During shadowing sessions, it’s also important to ensure you see/participate in the usual activities, not a pseudo-day where they’ve curated the experience for you.

4. Tour the workspace. Depending on your experiences, company spaces can be different from what you expect. Job shadowing is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into other companies’ workspace.

Whether you use these questions or develop your own, take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the role and/or company that interests you.

6. What strategies does the company use to ensure open communication and how would you adapt this to improve the transparency of communication at all levels?
7. What current trends and issues should I be aware of? What do you envision for the future of this field?
8. What tasks do you have to complete that were not advertised in the job description?

Consider the gaps in your knowledge regarding the person’s role and build your questions from there. (Keep in mind that you can use some of these questions in a job interview, too!)

Some other questions could include:
6. What kind of lifestyle does your work allow? What is the company culture like?
7. What is your growth trajectory or that of someone in a similar position?

“It’s always been a bit intimidating to approach people in person or online to ask them for a connection or to ask them for 15 minutes of their time because I feel like I’m burdening them. Milieux has shown me more strategic ways that I can do so without feeling like I’m imposing on people’s space or time. It’s not about what you need but what you can offer as well!
