Tomorrow (Friday) night.

In addition to the great Michael Creber and family (second set), I will be joined by some very musical friends.

A long time ago, the CNIB put together a showcase of blind and visually impaired musicians. I was lucky enough to perform with these talented musicians at the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse Theatre. Next we toured British Columbia together, and finally we performed for ten days at the Arts Club Theatre.

For years it has been on my mind to bring these talented musicians friends together for a performance.

We hope to see you tomorrow evening at the Deep Cove Coffee House.

See poster fro details.

Coming soon.

June 21st will be a special evening.

In addition to Michael Creber and Family

Opening feature set

John Lyon and Friends

For many years it has been on my mind to organize a concert featuring musical friends from the blind community.

Several of us performed together many years ago, and on occasion have enjoyed some fabulous jam sessions since then.

Marilyn Rushton, Peg Mercer, Diana Brent, Betty Nobel, and Richard Marion, are superb musicians and performers. I learned a great deal from Marilyn, Peg, and Diana, plus original members Mary Brunner, BrianLendrum, Linda Jentz, and Patricia Palmer when we performed together many years ago at a CNIB-sponsored concert at the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse Theatre. We spent a month together the following summer on a bus touring British Columbia, and also performed together for a week-long engagement at the Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver.

We are proud to include Betty Nobel and Richard Marion in this long overdu reunion.

Coming to the Deep Cove Coffee Hous June 21st, 2024.Michael Creber and Family. And there’s more. Stay tuned.

Michael Creber and Family.

And there’s more. Stay tuned.

05/19/2024

The June 21st, 2024 Deep Cove Coffee House will be another doubleheader, with two feature acts:mJohn Lyon and some of his oldest and most talented musical friends, and Michael Creber and Family.

I wanted to say “the brillient Michael Creber” but I like to avoid hyperbole.

We can’t wait!

We are featuring more doubleheaders at the coffee house because we only have 10 performances a year, but a very large number of fabulous performers. We will return to the original format with two opening acts, and the feature act, from time to time. I do like the doubleheader because we get to feature more of the best musicians in town.

Earle Peach and Illiteratty. Earle is an exceptional songwriter, band leader, singer, and instrumentalist. Illiteratty showcases Earle’s original songs and arrangements. Earle and Barb Jackson also run the popular monthly East Vancouver music venue Bests On Broadway.

What can I say about Miles Black? I consider Miles to be one of the great talents in the local music scene. For this performance I asked Miles to choose any musicians he thought would be suitable for our coffee house. He chose vocalist Glenda Rae and guitarist/vocalist Brett Wade. I can’t wait!

From Jane Osborne:

“We have a fabulous double feature – Andrea Superstein at 9pm and Kristina Olsen at 7:30pm – at this month’s Friday, February 16th coffee house event at Mount Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Ave, North Vancouver (details and directional map at end of e-mail).

About our double feature:

Late Feature 9pm: Andrea Superstein
Super is one of the most versatile voices in music today. Dubbed as "redefining jazz" her debut performance at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival earned her a Galaxie Rising Star nomination and launched her squarely into the limelight. Her soul-jazz stylings exemplify powerful vocals, evoking the gentle and the strong, deep blues to pop confection, often in the same song. She lithely navigates the colours of the emotional spectrum, luring us in deeper with killer improvisational instincts and exceptional storytelling. Her newest album Oh Mother is a multimedia tour de force which has already received rave reviews from All About Jazz, Broadway World and JazzIz.
Super (https://andreasuperstein.com/) will be joined by Chris Gestrin on a multitude of keyed instruments. (https://www.chrisgestrin.com/)

Opening Feature 7:30pm: Kristina Olsen
Kristina Olsen is one of the most entertaining and compelling performers on the international acoustic circuit. A superb multi-instrumentalist (acoustic guitar, steel-body slide guitar, saxophone, concertina, banjo, mandolin and piano) as well as an award- winning songwriter with a big bluesy voice, Kristina has audiences around the world coming back for more. Her mix of powerful songs ranging from sassy bottleneck blues to lilting ballads to swing jazz to ra**ch and roll (as well as her hilarious storytelling) makes for a diverse and satisfying musical experience, on stage, on disc and in book. Born in San Francisco and raised in Haight-Ashbury during the 1960's, Kristina's approach to music and life was formed by that environment of vital cultural expression, social activism and diverse musical influences. With thirteen recordings under her belt (four on the Philo/Rounder label), a live DVD, an enhanced eBook with music, (They Paid Us in Tub Time) and a new album due out in May 2024, she has a wealth of music and stories to pick from. The Deep Cove Coffee House. What else?

Here is Jane’s first mailout for the December 15th Deep Cove Coffee House

“The Ilhan Saferali Quartette is headlining our Friday, December 15th coffee house event at Mount Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Ave, North Vancouver (details and directional map at end of e-mail).

About our headliners:

- Ilhan is a Canadian musician currently based out of New York City. After making a name for himself as promising young talent on the Vancouver jazz scene in his late teens, Ilhan moved to New York to study jazz performance at The New School and develop his professional / artistic career. He is a trumpet player, pianist and composer who has worked and studied with many Jazz greats such as Reggie Workman, Jean Michel-Pilc, Jimmie Owens, Allison Miller, Neil Swainson, Brad Turner, Christine Jensen and many more. For Ilhan this is a nostalgic return to a venue that he remembers visiting with his Dad. (https://ilhansaferali.com/)

- Ilhan is joined for this performance by Miles Black (piano), Maverick MacMillan (drums) & Brock Meades (bass). Miles needs no introduction to the Deep Coffee House stage and we are delighted to have him return on piano for this gig (https://milesblack.ca/). Maverick is a professional musician currently living in California. He is making a special trip up to Vancouver to play the drums for this gig. Brock on bass hails from Shawnigan Lake and rounds out the foursome. You are in for an exciting evening of music with a dynamic and entertaining jazz quartette.

Opening for our feature:

- Jessica Heaven with Mary Sparks & John Lyon. It’s wonderful to be showcasing a local North Vancouver trio as the first opening act for the December coffee house. Welcome back Jessica! We look forward to hearing you perform with Mary Sparks and our very own John Lyon. (https://www.jessicaheaven.com/)

- Linda Szentes & Jazzlinks are the second opening act. They are a band of equals - Linda on vocals, Mike Toth on guitar and Joe Worst on bass. This democratic trio performs jazz mostly, but can easily slip into R & B grooves when the temperature rises! Linda loves another Linda - Linda Ronstadt - and will treat audiences to a signature tune or two when she and the guys are feeling the love! (https://lszentes26.wixsite.com/linda-szentes)

Jane’s recent post.

“Chris Ronald had to cancel because he injured his guitar plucking hand in a bad fall! We wish Chris all the best with his recovery.

Jennifer Scott & Rene Worst are the new headliners for our Friday, October 20th coffee house event at Mount Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Ave, North Vancouver (details and directional map at end of e-mail). Big thanks to this wonderful jazz duo for stepping in to replace Chris!!!!

About our headliners:
- Jennifer is an amazing talent who’s collaborated with the likes of Tommy Banks, Kenny Wheeler, and Clark Terry, vocalist/pianist Jennifer Scott “brings a striking emotional intelligence to everything she sings, no matter the context. As much a song stylist as an improviser, she puts her stamp on material through her supple sense of swing and deft, slippery phrasing. Her partner bassist Rene, has worked with renowned artists such as David Bowie, Freddie Hubbard, and Chet Baker, creatively harnessing jazz, folk, rock, and fusion for five decades. Together, their chemistry absolutely crackles as they draw from original compositions and interpret the American Songbook, pop, and global folk music.

Opening for our feature:

- Brenda Bennett is a captivating singer/songwriter who blends the storytelling genius of folk artists like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez with the mystical flare of Ann Mortifee. Her magnetic voice carries a depth of wisdom that draws the listener in as she paints pictures from her life, poetry, music and dreams through song. Brenda is currently in the process of recoding a solo album to be released in 2024.

- Poole & Craib are Gary Poole and Kevin Craib, a song writing duo from B.C.’s Lower Mainland. They are delighted to be returning to DCCH. It continues to be one of their favourite venues. Poole & Craib’s thoughtful guitar work creates the foundation for melodies and lyrics that tell compelling stories and explore memorable people and places. Their DCCH set will feature some new songs, as well as tunes from their recently released second album, “Kindness for Free.”

About our headliner:

- Since emigrating from his native England in 2002, Chris Ronald has earned a place as one of Canada’s finest singer-songwriters creating and performing Contemporary Folk music. Ronald's stand-out signature sound is steeped in his British background, poetic lyrics, and a buttery fusion of Roots and Americana music. His first full-production studio album, Timeline, catapulted Ronald to a new level in his career with, among other accolades, a nomination for “Songwriter of the Year” at the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Shortly afterward, he was signed to esteemed Canadian folk label Borealis Records to release Fragments (2017) followed by Light & Dark (2021). Both albums achieved top 10 on the FAI Folk Radio chart. About our feature performers:

And most of all we love to sing and make harmonies together.

Jane Osborne’s most recent message:

“The Deep Cove Coffee House proudly presents: "The 2023 B.C. Swing Camp Bursary Fundraiser". B.C. Swing Camp is a popular annual week-long workshop held in August in Sorrento B.C. for musicians at all levels.

http://www.bcswingcamp.ca/

There are week long master classes and daily workshops focusing on solo and group performance of American Songbook jazz, for vocalists, guitarists, pianists, ukulele players, horn players, bass players, and other instrumentalists. Guitarist and Swing Camp instructor Bill C**n likes to call Swing Camp the “happiest place on earth”. The instructor’s roster from Swing Camp has included some of the very best jazz players and singers from the lower mainland, Seattle, and across Canada and the U.S., including Michael Creber, Jennifer Scott, Rene Worst, Tom Keenlyside, Karin Plato, Juno winner Mike Rud, Rueben Gurr, John Knowles (who played with Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau), Kristina Olsen, and Guido Heistek, to name a few. This year we have invited Ray Piper (from Brazil).

Several of our most successful and well-attended Deep Cove Coffee House concerts have featured these talented Swing Camp instructors. The atmosphere and ‘culture’ of Swing Camp is one of total support and respect for participants. "World’s safest and happiest place indeed."

Until Swing Camp was suspended during Covid, every year, director Rosemary Campbell organized a fundraiser concert to provide bursaries and financial assistance, so that everyone who wanted to could come to Swing Camp. The 2023 Swing Camp fundraiser will be presented by the Deep Cove Coffee House on July 7th, at Mt Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Avenue in North Vancouver. Doors open at 7:00 P.M., music starts at 7:30. All profits from the bursary fundraiser will go to support Swing Camp participants who could not afford to attend otherwise.

Like past fundraisers, the July 7th concert will feature performances from both Swing Camp instructors and talented participants. This year we have invited Karin Plato and her husband Gorm Damburg, Kristina Olsen, Rita Dickson and her partner Matt, Mary Sparks, John Lyon, Kathy Francis and Andrea Smith (Pearl), and a few surprise guests who have offered to come if scheduling permits.

Since this is a Deep Cove Coffee House concert, there will also be free tea, decaf coffee, and fabulous home-baked goodies.

Cash at the door, $15. Extra donations will be gratefully accepted.
