What does a wedding planner actually do? And do I need one?

Most people know what happens behind the scenes before the wedding day. What a lot of people don’t know is that our work doesn’t end when the planning ends. A lot of what I do for you is actually make your day feel as stress-free and seamless as possible.

While many people think I spend wedding days standing around and “overseeing” the event, I actually spend a lot of time doing odd jobs you wouldn’t expect. I will carry your train while you walk, pin your groom’s boutonnière, light your candles, remove your veil, fix your hair/makeup, direct your guests, grab you food and drinks, and so much more.

I’m there to be your wedding day bestie and personal attendant, which means taking on some strange tasks sometimes so that you can enjoy yourself. That being said, since we’ll see so much of each other, we need to click on a personal level (think about it, you don’t want someone you find annoying in your face all day at your wedding).

So if you need someone to help you put your heels on, guard the bathroom door, track down your grandpa, keep those feet warm, get you both laughing for the camera, or refill your champagne glass, I’m your girl!

This was supposed to be a dark and gloomy day. The week before we had to wear heavy jackets to rehearse because it was so cold. Somehow, the sun shone down on this incredible couple and they had a perfect (warm) outdoor wedding in October!

K & J are so genuine, kind, and in love. I’m so thankful that I got to be a part of their wedding and I can’t help but be filled with joy when I look back at their gorgeous photos.

What a beautiful day this was celebrating K & P!

While they couldn’t have their pup be a part of their ceremony, this couple didn’t want to miss out on having him in their family photos.

The New Year often comes with a lot of “firsts”… some fun firsts and some not so fun.

Pro tip: when it comes to your wedding, it’s easy to miss out on some of those important firsts. Plan them ahead of time so that they are memorable and you can cherish them.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I will be taking some much needed time off for the holidays over the next couple weeks to celebrate with my family. We have a bunch of family traditions that I’m excited to enjoy.

We always celebrate with the grandparents on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so we take Boxing Day to ourselves and we make our own special breakfast and dinner and we open presents and do some Christmas baking in front of a Christmas movie. It’s a fun way to extend the festivities and make special memories with our kiddos.

Any suggestions for the Christmas movie we should watch this year?

I used to cry at every wedding I attended. Nowadays it takes a lot more to bring me to tears, but the amount of love between these two definitely had me wiping my cheek a couple of times.

Also, do you prefer a choreographed or spontaneous first dance? I tend to like spontaneous dances with a couple of choreographed dips and twirls thrown in.

Unpopular opinion: I still love bright and bold colours for weddings.

The world as a whole, including the wedding industry, has an obsession with pretty neutral colours. And don’t get me wrong, I love neutrals too! In fact, they are usually my preference for a beautiful elegant wedding.

But once in a while I get to work with a really fun bride who wants a lot of bright colours to reflect her personality.

Here’s the thing… you don’t have to have to follow a trend or do what’s normal just because everyone else does. Your wedding is a reflection of who you are! If you want bold colours instead of neutrals, or you want a wedding pretzel instead of wedding cake, do it!

Just make it true to you and I promise it’ll still be beautiful.

This girl squad had so much fun celebrating their bride!

One of the things I always tell people when they are selecting their bridal party is not to choose people based on how long they’ve known them or if they’ve been a bridesmaid for them.

Choose people that you’re close to who are genuinely happy for you and are going to be willing to help you and celebrate you along the way. You don’t want a bridesmaid who isn’t happy to be there or makes things about them.

Choose your wedding details carefully and make sure your photographer gets some beautiful photos for you to remember them!

I remember distinctly choosing jewelry that was gifted to me by my mom and my aunt for my wedding. They were pieces that they gave me when I turned 16.

I also wore the perfume that I wore when my husband and I first start dating because he remembered it and it was special to him.

I’ve even saved some things for my daughters to use if they want!

If you want some really beautiful detail shots, bring a copy of your invitation suite and ask your photographer to come a little early to take photos of everything while you are getting ready so you are not rushing to put on shoes and jewelry so you can leave.

It’s pouring rain out today which usually has me a bit bummed, but looking back on this beautiful rainy wedding from last summer has me remembering the bright spots on a dark day.

Some tips for hosting outdoor weddings in our unpredictable Canadian weather:

💧 Always have a backup plan like an alternative location (barn, inside the hall, etc) or a tent as backup.

💧 It never hurts to have some umbrellas on hand and some planners bring them for their couples. Cute rain boots can make for some fun photos too!

💧Ask your photographer what their rain plan is. This photographer had all her rain gear on hand, including something to protect her camera so she could shoot outdoor photos.

Couples are often worried about tall centerpieces disrupting conversations, but on round tables they actually don’t make much of a difference!

Here’s a little secret, and a tip to help you out:

Usually at a round table people only chat with those beside them. Also, the guests across the table are far enough away that the centerpiece doesn’t really block them.
If this is a concern for you, stick to low centerpieces on harvest tables and use these high pieces as accents on round tables.

I was rewatching an episode of today and realized that this venue was actually one of the amazing Toronto locations featured in the show!

As a wedding planner, when I ask about decor, I often hear couples say “our venue is so beautiful, we don’t really need much to decorate it.” This is definitely the case at this historic venue in Toronto.
