Want to get the most out of your day? Have a first look or private ceremony!

I’ll always encourage couples to spend as much time together as possible on their wedding day. I’ve seen ceremonies take place at 6pm without a reveal - that’s your whole wedding day spent apart!

Either have a reveal or a private ceremony late morning or early afternoon. This way you’re leaving plenty of time to enjoy the day together and celebrate with your guests.

The tradition of a bouquet toss is quickly fading. Instead, I’ve seen some pretty creative alternatives to preserving the bridal bouquet.

My favourite - gifting your bouquet to a loved one on your wedding day. It’s a meaningful gesture that symbolizes gratitude and love. It’s a beautiful way to create lasting memories.

Looking for a DIY project that will save you money?

Pull together your own florals! I’ve started to see a lot of couples source their own ceremony and reception florals, while turning to professionals to manage their bouquets, corsages and boutonnières.

Start by finding a nearby flower farm and order in bulk well in advance. When it comes to your final look, keep it simple. (see previous post!)

Some couples will enjoy pulling the florals together, or leave it to your wedding coordinator. They’ll have to be assembled the day before or morning of your wedding.

A typical wedding day does not include many moments of privacy. Even when you’re taking photos or having your first look, there’s a photographer or videographer there to capture the moment.

Try to sneak away at least once to simple hang out and chat, no photos. The optimal times to do this without interfering with your day are:
• breakfast, before getting ready
• private first look
• immediately following your ceremony

Looking for a DIY project that will save you money?

Start early to source your own pre loved centrepieces and decor. You’d be surprised how much you can find at thrift stores!

Start by collecting inspiration photos online and keep an open mind. You can never go wrong with a variety of small vases amd votives. A timeless look that quickly fills the space without feeling cluttered. Bonus, a single flower and some baby’s breath or greenery is also much more affordable than bouquets - and easy to prep yourself.

Remember, less is more. You’ve chosen your venue for its unique characteristics so just some soft touches to complement your colour theme is all you need!

The last thing you need on your wedding day is feeling rushed.

Things happen - hair and make-up delays, traffic, waiting for a rain cloud to pass, dress or shoe malfunction, photography challenges, kids acting up, wedding party forgot rings, groom forgot vows, bus breaks down on way to first look…I’ve experienced it all! With extra time added, there’s no need to stress.

Even if everything goes to plan, you won’t regret having a bit of extra time throughout the day to take a breather and enjoy the moment. 🤍

Looking for a DIY project that will save you money?

Send digital wedding invites! Depending on your guest count, this could save you a good chunk of money and countless hours of work.

Digital invites are growing in popularity as they’re a sustainable choice and you can track rsvp’s, meal choices, and allergies with ease.

Going digital doesn’t mean you have to compromise on design. Stay consistent with your wedding website and when sending digital save-the-dates, invites, and thank you’s. Then incorporate your design on the day with your welcome sign, seating chart, placecards, table numbers, etc.

If you’re planning for time outside on your wedding day, even if it’s just for photos, always be prepared for rain.

Most of the time it’s a game time decision to move indoors, so planning ahead will make a significant difference as your vendors can then easily make the shift ie. photography lighting, ceremony seating, decor, music, etc.

Your wedding coordinator will suggest some options with you. It’s important that you’re pleased with the backup plan as it will help ease your mind on the day, if needed.

And remember, rain is nature’s way of adding a little romance to your special day. 🤍

Looking for a DIY project that will save you money? Use cheesecloth as table runners! It’s an inexpensive fabric that adds a soft, romantic touch to your tables - ideal for long tables.

Simply buy in bulk and cut to size. Nowadays they come in various colours, or you can die them yourself to support your theme.

Tips:
• The higher the grade, the finer the weave - opt for Grade 90 or higher.
• If dying the cloth, add some length as the process will shrink the cloth, and test the colour first.

Typically during cocktail hour your guests mingle while you’re off taking photos.

If possible, try joining cocktail hour for at least 30 minutes. The day will go by quickly so insert yourself in as much of the celebrations as possible.

Enjoy this time to mingle with your guests and enjoy the hors d'oeuvres. It's also an opportune moment to raise a toast, adding a personal touch to the festivities.

Here’s Josh and I in 2005 - my 19th birthday 🤍

We met at 16 at a house party, became close friends, and started dating when we were 18.

Fast forward through 4 years of dating adventures, life nudged us in different directions. I jet-set across Europe and dove into the wild world of Advertising, while Josh set up shop in Tobermory, conquering the mortgage game.

A decade later, a twist of fate brought us back together. We now call Clearview home, with our little boy, my 2 step-kids, 2 dogs (plus probably a foster dog).

We got engaged in Summer of 2021, so stay tuned for some wedding planning content 🤍

Why did I start Pure Dutch?

I had the best time helping my bestie decorate her wedding - that’s where I fell in love with all things weddings! Pure Dutch came to life in 2014 and I earned my certificate with Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. I started as a wedding designer - planning, sourcing, and setting up decor and florals.

I then took on a role as Maitre’d with Pearl Hospitality where I coordinated 100+ weddings at Cambridge Mill. I learned a ton but missed the intimate and personalized approach when running my own little business.

So now I'm happily offering wedding day coordination. It’s truly a passion project so I limit the amount of weddings I take on each year. I absolutely love it and can’t wait for the 2024 wedding season! 🤍

Most wear white on their wedding day. This has been a popular tradition ever since the royal wedding of Britain's Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840 - who wore a light-coloured satin gown. European leaders and those living in luxury followed suit and started wearing white on their wedding day. It is also said to symbolize purity and virginity in Victorian culture.

As decades passed and clothes became more affordable, most of society adopted this tradition which is still quite common today, however, we're starting to see champagne, light pink, and even black wedding dresses - anything goes!

Availability, experience, and pricing are typically the fundamentals when hiring vendors. But do you connect with them?

As availability is limited due to the backlog of weddings as a result of the pandemic, I’ve seen couples this year rush to secure vendors. Before moving too fast, make sure you genuinely get along with them and feel at ease. Choose the right team to be by your side on your most magical day.

Cake-cutting is typically done after dinner and just before dancing begins - it's the last 'official' event of the evening. That said, wedding cakes are quickly being replaced with champagne towers and donut walls - I've even seen a cake piñata! And these can occur at any time of the day or night. If you're on the fence or looking to cut costs, consider only serving dessert or cutting your cake and having it plated for your guests.

Incorporating a unity tree planting ceremony is not only the perfect way to give back to earth, but it will also leave you with the ultimate keepsake. Planting a tree on your wedding day symbolizes your relationship as it takes root, grows, and blossoms alongside your marriage.

For outdoor weddings, plant the tree in the ground on-site if possible. Or if indoors, use a pot first and relocate. Either way, prepare most the work so you're only adding some soil to complete the project.

Before printed press was invented, weddings were announced by the town crier and anyone who heard was welcome to attend. Newspapers started to be used in the 1600s where the wealthier, literate class would print their wedding announcements in their local paper.

In the 1800s printed invitations were mailed to specific people. Today, mailed invitations are still the most popular choice, however, some have opted for digital save-the-dates and invitations.

You may assume your venue will provide crisp, smooth linens but this is not always the case. Make a note to ask your venue coordinator to steam your linens before your photographers take photos of the space. They'll thank you for it!

To limit stress, it's best to start planning early to determine your budget, secure your venue and key vendors, and send out save the dates. Staying within budget will significantly reduce stress. As venues and vendors book up quickly, get this done early so there are no letdowns. Schedule a time each week to get something done and use a wedding email address to stay organized.

If there are multiple guests commuting from the same area, consider arranging an eco-shuttle to reduce your environmental impact. You can also limit the amount of travel by having the same venue for your ceremony and reception, and include a note in the invite to encourage your guests to consider carpooling. Small efforts make a big difference!

It’s believed bridal showers originated in The Netherlands in the 16th century when the bride’s family could not financially support her, or when the father of the bride refused to provide a dowry because he did not approve of the marriage.

Today bridal showers are still common where the bride’s family and close friends shower her with well wishes, love, and gifts. Wedding showers are also gaining popularity to be more inclusive of all those involved.
