Guy Fawkes Event, Orangeville REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER! Gunpowder, Treason and plot. For 400 Years bonfires have b As years progressed, however, the ritual became more elaborate.

The tradition of Guy Fawkes-related bonfires actually began the very same year as the failed coup. The Plot was foiled in the night between the 4th and 5th of November 1605. Already on the 5th, agitated Londoners who knew little more than that their King had been saved, joyfully lit bonfires in thanksgiving. Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebra

tions. Effigies of Guy Fawkes graced the pyres. Still today, some communities throw dummies of Guy Fawkes on the bonfire (and even those of a contemporary politician or two), although the gesture is seen by most as a quirky tradition, rather than an expression of hostility. Preparations for Bonfire Night celebrations include making a dummy of Guy Fawkes, which is called "the Guy". Some children even keep up an old tradition of walking in the streets, carrying "the Guy" they have just made, and beg passersby for "a penny for the Guy." The kids use the money to buy fireworks for the evening festivities. On the night itself, Guy is placed on top of the bonfire, which is then set alight; and fireworks displays fill the sky. The extent of the celebrations and the size of the bonfire varies from one community to the next. Lewes, in the South East of England, is famous for its Bonfire Night festivities and consistently attracts thousands of people each year to participate. Bonfire Night is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries. It was actively celebrated in New England as "Pope Day" as late as the 18th century. Today, November 5th bonfires still light up in far out places like New Zealand and Newfoundland in Canada.

A number of people have reached out to us this year regarding the event. Guy Fawkes Night here in Ontario has faced its share of challenges over the years. First and foremost is the Venue. Not too many places are agreeable to hosting an event that includes a bonfire, fireworks, and alcohol sales! Venue costs and insurance have continued to rise over the years and it has become a real struggle to make it all work.

Balancing the cost of keeping the event affordable against the continually rising costs has become more and more difficult. These are costs that are carried by us, the organizers until funds are recouped by ticket sales. We have been relatively fortunate in past years to have had fairly decent weather, however, should the weather not cooperate one year, ticket sales will not cover the cost of the event. This is a personal risk that has become too great to bear.

As the event has grown, the number of hours spent planning and organizing has also grown exponentially. This was a grassroots event organised by a couple of ex-pats and grew into an amazing night each year. However for this night to stay alive and successful in Ontario, it needs a number of things:

Volunteers. Volunteers are required to assist in organizing the many behind-the-scenes facets of this great night.

A principal sponsor. A sponsor is required to help cover the upfront costs in return for sizeable exposure in front of a very targeted audience.

And last but not least, a suitable venue.

We still have the rights to the website which is currently on hold. But sadly, until we can sort these issues out, this event is suspended until further notice. If anybody knows anyone who would like to host, sponsor or volunteer, we would be more than happy to continue the event.

Thanks so much to everyone who has come out to celebrate with us and hopefully at some point we will all meet again. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
