McRAE POINT – MAY 10, 2024
SUBJECT: UPDATE – Park Opening / Emerald Ash Borer
Dear Ontario Parks visitor and/or local resident,
Ash trees at both Mara and McRae Pt Provincial Parks were infested by the invasive Emerald Ash
Borer, a wood boring beetle that kills 99% of all ash trees. These trees were removed this winter and
spring and the majority of this project work is complete.
• Thank you for your patience during this massively impactful and important project!!!
• There are only a handful of campsites closed in response.
• Park staff will continue to work to rehabilitate affected areas in May and June with equipment
use, grass cutting, gravel deliveries and spreading and invasive species (Garlic Mustard)
removal. Please be aware and safe as the team continues their important work.
McRae Point Provincial Park annually opens the 2nd Friday in May. However:
• McRae Point is unfortunatally closed to camping and vehicular access from May 10 to May 15
due to seasonal flooding from Lake Simcoe and abundance of spring precipitation.
• McRae Point will open to camping and vehicular access for the season May 16th
• Gates will remain closed until May 16 at 0800 hrs.
• Some campsites will be closed from May 16th to May 21 and reservation holders will be
contacted and will be eligible for a full refund.
• Mara Provincial Park is open for camping and day use.
Pedestrian access is permitted and encouraged.
If you require and further information or clarity, I welcome you to contact me directly at

Thank you again for your patience and understanding!
Sincerely,
Scott Thomas, Park Superintendent, Bass Lake, Mara, McRae Pt, Provincial Parks
