12/06/2024

Today, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the 14 young women who were killed at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6, 1989. In their memory, and in the memory of all those women who have been lost to violence, we acknowledge the call to take action to end gender-based violence in our homes, communities, and country.

The United Church of Canada's Sara Stratton has written an Advent prayer for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls:

God of hope and love,
Today we stand somewhere between peace and joy,
unsure where to find them
in a world where women continue to be subject to violence
because they are women, because they are Indigenous.
Today it is hard for us to imagine the lamb and the lion together,
to know that our hearts will rejoice at the arrival of justice.
And yet we persevere.
We remember, and we persevere.

Amen

Frank Hepditch; - BA, MA

Passed away peacefully on November 28, 2024, at the Mariposa House Hospice, in his 85th year. Born October 17, 1940, in Clattice Harbour, Newfoundland.

Frank Hepditch of Orillia, beloved husband of Sharon Ruth (nee Miller) and the late Gayle Arthur. Predeceased by siblings Sarah Margaret Hepditch, John Hepditch, Mary Coleman, Patrick Hepditch, Ray Hepditch and Leo Hepditch. He will be fondly remembered by his large extended family many who still live in Frank’s homeland, Newfoundland.

Beloved brother-in-law to Marlene and Walter Bulas, Paul and Barb Miller, Murray and Lynn Miller, and Patricia Miller. Adored uncle by many nieces and nephews.

Frank had a passion for teaching not only students but other colleagues through many catholic school boards, always wanting the best for others. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, fundraising for his community through St. Paul's United Church, playing bridge, and was an elite member of the "Romeo group" where many golf games were had, and treasured friendships were made.

Following cremation, a Celebration of Frank's Life will be held at the Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St. N., Orillia, on Friday, December 6th from 11 a.m. until time of service in the chapel at 1 p.m. If desired, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society or Mariposa House Hospice would be appreciated.

Day 6 of Against Gender-Based Violence: Remember, Reflect, Rebuild 🕯️🤍

We invite you to join us for a Candlelight Vigil to honour those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence, including the 14 women murdered 35 years ago in the Polytechnique Massacre in Montreal.

On December 6, 1989, a gunman targeted female students at the École Polytechnique, specifically because they were women, in an act of extreme misogyny that shocked the nation.

This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing epidemic of gender-based violence that affects countless women and girls across Canada and around the world.

This vigil provides an opportunity for us to come together in solidarity, reflect on the lives lost, and renew our collective commitment to ending violence against women.

📅 Date: Friday, December 6th
⏰ Time: 5:00 PM
📍 Location: St. Paul's Centre
🎟️ This event is free for all to attend

Green Haven Shelter for Women is honoured to partner with Orillia, Elizabeth Fry Society Simcoe Muskoka, and Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie, to host this event, where we will light candles in memory of the victims of the massacre and all those affected by gender-based violence.

We are excited to share this year’s nominees for the 2024 Orillia Regional Arts & Heritage Awards. Leading up to the awards night on Wednesday, November 27, we will be featuring each of the 18 nominees. ⁣

With that, let us introduce our 17th nominee…🥁⁣

And the nominee is...for the Qennefer Browne⁣
Achievement Award…..Mary Lou Meiers. ✨⁣

Mary Lou’s project, Call To Action #83, grew out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which had 94 Calls to Action. Call 83 encouraged artists to create pieces that helped with “truth-telling” and what the reconciliation journey might look be. Mary Lou has gone to extraordinary lengths to recruit, encourage, cajole, and loving navigate the challenges of bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists into completing three rounds of beautiful and powerful artistic expressions. Congratulations Mary Lou on your nomination!⁣

The awards are supported by Capital, North Simcoe Arts and Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH).
