Third year of growing strawflowers, but this has been the best year for them. Tall healthy stems, HUGE blossoms! Been a weird weather year, a few things that did great last year are doing poorly this year and vice versa. A lot of flower farming is learning through experimenting and figuring out first hand what grows best in your soil and climate.

07/27/2023

I once had someone ask me “Don’t you ever actually work on your farm? Every time I drive by, I never see you working.”

I laughed 🤣 and told him, “That’s because most of the work is done while everyone else is still sleeping.”

Ok, that’s a bit of an overstatement…  but it’s true that much of our farm work is done very early in the morning or in the evening.

Here’s why. Flowers are the most hydrated and firm in the morning, when the stems are filled with water. 💦

As the day progresses and the heat rises 🔥, the water flows down the stems into the base of the plants and the flowers begin to dehydrate, which means the stems can get floppy and wilty. 😫

Flowers that are harvested in the heat of the day are wilty, floppy and expire faster.

This is why we ONLY harvest flowers in the cool of the day, either early in the morning or late in the evening.

Our goal is to begin harvesting before the sun rises and finish before about 9 or 10 am, when it gets too hot.

After the flowers are harvested, we bring them to our workshop, dry off the dew with fans and transfer them to clean buckets before storing them in our walk-in cooler ❄️.

We allow the flowers to fully rehydrate for 24 hours before arranging with them. This makes sure we have high quality flowers, harvested at just the right stage, harvested at just the right time and cared for in just the right way to make sure you get the best quality flowers.

Our afternoons are spent arranging the flowers from the previous day’s harvest (this is why we’re closed on Monday - we try our best to take a break from harvesting on Sundays!) and wrapping them up for you. 💐

There’s a lot of “behind the scenes” work that goes into growing cut flowers… and if we’re doing our job well, you probably won’t ever see the work that goes into it. 😀

If you’re feeling like you’re behind today… I hope this “Behind the Scenes” peek at our farm makes you feel better.

Feeling like you’re behind makes you feel terrible. But what if you’re not behind at all? What if everything is exactly where it SHOULD be?

This time of year, I get lots of people asking “Where are all your flowers? I don’t see anything growing. I thought this was a flower farm.”

I used to get pretty upset… but then I realized these questions are actually an incredible opportunity to educate!

On a flower farm, we plant our seedlings when they are very small, about 1-2 inches tall.

Unlike the Annuals you buy for your landscaping that are in full bloom, we never want the seedlings to be in bloom when we plant them. In fact, if the seedlings begin blooming in the tray, I chuck them in the compost pile and start over! Those seedlings blooming at 3 inches tall will never reach their full potential.

Instead, we want the seedlings to focus on growing strong roots for the first few weeks. Only then are they able to send up the long, strong stems that are required for cut flowers (18-24 inch stems are standard).

What this means is our fields start out looking incredibly unimpressive. Once transplanted, the seedlings take about 6-8 weeks to bloom.

In Michigan, because of our cold weather ❄️ and late frosts, we often can’t plant out the seedlings until the end of May… which means the flowers don’t begin blooming until mid/late July.

And this is all normal! This is how our growing season works!

On our farm, peak bloom time is late August/early September, which makes sense when you realize nearly all cut flowers take 90-120 days from seed to bloom. 🌱🌸😍

In a world that wants instant results, it’s helpful to be reminded that good things take time… and it’s this waiting time that makes the rewards so much sweeter!

Year 3!
This time of year I like to take some time to reintroduce myself to anyone new here :)

My name is Emma, and I am the owner of Maple Holme Flowers. I am the fifth generation in my family to be growing on on our home farm. I have a BFA from Queen’s University.

I’ve been a part of the fabulous Floral & Decor Team at since Fall 2020 but this July will mark my first full year as the Head Florist! The highlight of 2022 was seeing my work featured in Today’s Bride Magazine 🤩

Although, I work with blooms imported from all corners of the globe at Aquatopia; 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐈 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦, 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐩. These flowers have never seen the inside of a truck or airplane, and have never been wrapped in plastic.

I love giving people the opportunity & choice to support local farmers, and to feel good about buying flowers. You can feel guilt free about enjoying these 100% locally, field grown flowers!

Thank you for following me on my flower farming journey, I hope you will continue to grow with me!
