ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: SOKOTTA

Daniel Shrum, also known as Sokotta is a house and techno music producer based in Ottawa. His raw passion for electronic music began in 2013 when he first heard the genre and fell in love with everything electronic.

Sokotta’s distinctive sound is all about the underground. His musical ethos fluctuates between groovy house and bass beats, and a flare for female vocals. He has an affinity for ‘mature wubs’, a term he proudly coined.

Sokotta spends all of his free time in the studio, refining his vintage underground bass-y sound, and playing his music in Canadian clubs and Festivals across Canada. His most recent releases were signed by Rock Bottom and Sorta Kinda, and had a very positive reception in the dance community.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DJ SILENT K

Karyn McKay aka DjSilentK, has been playing music since 2006. She picked up the hobby and love for electronic music easily, beginning her journey through sound at Mavericks Bar at their infamous Relapse Monday event, an event that would prove to start her on her path in the club scene.

She performed at Lotus Lounge in Ottawa ON, BPM afterhours and Euphoria afterhours in Gatineau, the legendary Mercury Lounge, Café Deckuf, and many a house party.

Normally known for her Tech House and Minimal vibes, she played her first festival in the woods with her DnB style at An Aptly Named Summer Festival at Paradise campground.

Since moving to BC Canada, she has found gigs are few and far between in her smaller-than-Ottawa town of Port Alberni, but Pride in Port Alberni welcomed Karyn as part of their entertainment last year 2023.

Being able to change genres and mix seamlessly, Karyn has shaped her career as a DJ with club moves and festival vibes. Catch her at the Black Rabbit Private event playing DnB this August 2-4 2024.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: RICK LAPLANTE

Born in Ottawa, Canada, Rick Laplante's main musical influences came in the early 90's during his university years in London, ON, due to its proximity to Detroit and Toronto. Frequent weekend visits to those major cities exposed him to some of the most groundbreaking underground sounds heard in the world during the early 90's. Rick has now been professionally DJing for over 30 years.

Rick's preferred club style is anything described as groovy and/or bouncy tech-house, yet he also draws influence from his eclectic music collection. A highly technical mixer, Rick includes flashes of myriad genres when playing house music sets, ranging from techno to disco, breaks to jazz, and from latin to lounge. He hasn't forgotten his musical roots from running the Detroit-Toronto corridor for years, you can always expect the unexpected while Rick blends several different auditory flavours into his Dj sets.

As well as being the founder and a resident DJ of White Rabbit events in Ottawa, Rick has performed in notable venues in Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City, Portland, Hartford, Portsmouth, and many other cities across north eastern North America.

Spinning, throwing jams and running borders since 2000, Mz. Revolution brings the wikkidest sound to the massive.

In the early 2000s, Mz Rev held down Ottawa's Chicks with Decks and was the main organizer of Ottawa's original graffiti art parties, Beatz and Piecez.

In the mid 2000s she toured across Canada from Whitehorse to Vancouver to Halifax and represented the fresh sounds of new school Canadian ragga jungle in Europe, dropping tunes in the Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Highlights included headlining for Let It Roll in Prague, playing in Amsterdam on the 60th anniversary of the Canadian liberation of the Netherlands.

From 2008 - 2012 she promoted Konkrete Jungle 613, bringing in Canadian and international talent for monthly shows.

Jungle luminaries she has played alongside include Aries, Nicky Blackmarket, Liondub, Marcus Visionary, Rene Levice, Krinjah, Ladylite and many more.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DASA

DASA is a local Ottawa DJ/producer and Basscamp founder/resident DJ who got started with music playing bass in progressive metal bands. Growing up in the 90s, his influences draw from the sounds of classic video games, punk, grunge and metal. With a focus on Deep, Progressive and Techno genres - he aims to bring people together, make them feel and make them move.

He made his debut with MAP (Music.Art.Ppl) in Ottawa, and has since graced stages across Ottawa (City At Night, Mercury Lounge), Montreal and Toronto. He, along with his beautiful partner Stacey, run Basscamp - a local event group that aims to capture the essence of some of their favorite festivals, creating welcoming experiences where people feel free and safe to dance, express themselves and make genuine connections.

He will be returning to the festival circuit in summer 2024 with dates at Sonic Springs, Summerdaze, Black Rabbit Campout, Front Rite Republic as well as River & Sky Festivals!
