Hi! Itā€™s been a while!

This has been the wildest, most wonderful year filled with travel, family, friends, animals, and opportunity. I am so grateful and full of joy, and feeling encouraged and challenged in a way that I havenā€™t felt since before Covid.

and I are deeeeep into planning for next year. Weā€™ve been busy with proposals for clients, designing our big, daunting showcase in January at the NAC, making huge purchases for our inventory, and even renovating our studio to prepare for all the growth.

Next year is gearing up to be bonkers in a great, healthy way and I love it. I feel inspired and hopeful again, which is something I havenā€™t felt in a long time. Iā€™m so excited to see what is to come and feeling ready for this next chapter, which will be very different from anything Iā€™ve done in the last 12 years.

Normally we would already be settled in Bali for our standard 6 months abroad, but weā€™re grounded for the time being while we see what the NAC has in store for us. So, we adopted 3 cats and bought a bunch of sweaters lol.

So cheers to an incredible year, we hope everyone has a wonderful holiday for those who celebrate, and for those who donā€™t, we hope you get some deserved time off!

Want to know how to design a šŸ–¤ minimalist šŸ–¤ wedding thatā€™s still cool? Hereā€™s how:

Minimalist wedding design isnā€™t about having nothing; itā€™s about making small, impactful design decisions so that it looks curated and sophisticated without clutter or decor with no intention. šŸ’”

Here, our bride (a graphic designer) created chic acrylic black signage accents to modernize rustic wood harvest tables. With selective placement of white flowers in bud vases, elegant tapered candles in glass for a glow, cheesecloth runners for texture, and a little greenery vines for the tables, we were able to achieve a simple but beautiful, minimal but intentional, clean but warm experience.

Weā€™re back from our wonderful winter away and already back into the full swing of things at our studio!

Lee & I spent 3 months in Bali (our home away from home), did a quick visa run to Hanoi, Vietnam, and then spent 1 month touring around Italy. It was absolutely incredible.

Thank you so much to .blooms for all your hard work while we were away, covering us when we had absolutely no internet, and keeping our events moving forward.

We had our first 3 events of the season this past weekend, and they were all perfect. Itā€™s a great feeling after so many months away.

Thank you also to everyone who followed our adventure on .and.frid! Itā€™s always a blast sharing my travels with you ā¤ļø

I havenā€™t shared a real photo on here since I was in Japan in December, whoops! And now thereā€™s this new Threads things that I just donā€™t want to bother with; clearly this is hard enough to keep up with. Iā€™m done feeling guilty about social media as a business owner, but I figured that maybe having a photo of me in Tokyo isnā€™t the best last photo to have posted, it kinda looks like I never came home lol.

So for anyone who hasnā€™t seen my Stories and thinks I might still be in Japan or dead, Iā€™m still here :) Iā€™m just comfortably busy and trying to stay off my phone more and more these days. That being said, Iā€™m slowly getting back into the habit of sharing on this app again, I just needed a hell of a lot of time to decompress after last yearā€™s psycho-season.

K bye again! šŸ˜˜

Hello from Tokyo! šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ

With the wedding season over and travel restrictions lifted nearly everywhere, I can finally get back to my old routine of heading to the other side of the planet for the entire winter! This time, I have a man tagging along ;)

Weā€™ll be back from Japan and Bali in April, and sharing our adventures in Stories here and on my travel account .and.frid

Weā€™ll still be working while we travel, donā€™t worry! Weā€™ll just be doing it from different time zones in much better weather šŸŒ“

We need a break! Weā€™re closing over the long weekend. Weā€™ll be at the cottage all weekend, then Lee and I are hosting Thanksgiving at our home on Monday.

We donā€™t have much time to be with our family and friends before we move to Bali at the end of the season, so weā€™re taking advantage while we can between weddings.

Plus, ā€œHell Weekā€ officially starts on October 17 (we have 3 back-to-back gorgeous but huge weddings) so weā€™re mentally gearing up for the hardest week of the year. Weā€™re all really excited for it though.

Pressure is on! But weā€™re almost at the finish line!

NEWS:

I became a planner because I wanted to design weddings. I got annoyed with passing my designs off to others to execute though, so I started doing my own floralsā€¦ then my own stationeryā€¦ then I found suppliers and started sourcing rentals to subcontractā€¦ now I even subcontract vendors like photographers and officiants on my contracts. It simplifies the process for our couples so much and it just makes sense (one payment plan).

However, itā€™s a LOT to manage. Itā€™s been good in the past, but lately weā€™ve been having a lot of issues with suppliers. Wrong orders getting sent, missed delivery windows, no stock, missing items at weddings, etc, all things we find out day-of and leave us scrambling. I know itā€™s a volume/supply problem, but I donā€™t want to deal with the unknown anymore. Iā€™m a professional planner. Obviously Iā€™m a complete control freak.

Soā€¦ I bought all the rentals. Allll of them. Lee and I have been pouring over proposals and wholesalers for weeks on end. Every single item weā€™ll be working with for the next 2 years between my 63+ weddings, 4 companies, and all the bonkers things I invent, I either now own or weā€™re creating from scratch. Iā€™ll only be renting if I trust and love the supplier dearly.

At the same time, Lee has been building the most beautiful bars, display walls, champagne walls, donut walls (lots of walls), lighting stands, ceiling structures, tables, compotes, arches, pergolas and so much more for me. Each piece has something smart about it too, like they are reversible or can be combined, etc. Weā€™re building for functionality and unique aesthetic.

So just like that, weā€™re now also a full blown, self-sufficient and *rapidly* expanding rental company too.

For now, Iā€™m only offering rentals for existing clients of ours, but Iā€™m exploring my options (next year though, this year is way too nuts).

I canā€™t wait to show you all the new things, but our inventory is exponentially growing with more to come and weā€™re BURIED under boxes, packing supplies, saw dust and paperwork.

(And dirt. Because weā€™ve also started growing cutting flowers for my orders, but thatā€™s a whole other thing for another dayā€¦)

Coordination

All wedding coordination services tend to manage the same elements:

Review and finalize the Wedding Day Timeline;
Final confirmations with vendors;
Final confirmations with the wedding party and VIP guests;
Leading or overseeing the Rehearsal;
Leading the wedding day.

If youā€™re only being hired for Coordination (which is typical for a new planner) then the couple will be passing you their designs and plans and expect you to take the baton and run with it.

There is an incredible amount of stress and complications that happen on a wedding day, no matter how perfectly itā€™s planned. My course on Coordination breaks down each of these responsibilities and walks you through it all, from what youā€™ll need to include in your final confirmations to vendors, how to lead a rehearsal, how to manage vendor arrivals and set up, how to run speeches during dinner, and so much more.

How do we stay organized for couple's big day?
Checklists.

Both viewing the Checklist by date and by category serve different functions. My team uses a blend of both. First, we look at where we are in the planning process. If we look at the date view and see that we are 10 months away from the wedding and itā€™s time to book a caterer, we will then flip to view the tasks by the Catering category and see how many we can knock off the checklist at once. We also like to assign our own team with the tasks weā€™ll be completing as their planners, and then we assign the couples with their specific tasks and give them specific deadlines so that they know exactly what they are responsible for compared to what weā€™ll complete for them. It really helps them to understand how much we are doing for them, and they like to track the progress as well.

Sweets and such.

Discussing cake preferences or other sweets table items like donuts or cookies, interviewing bakers, scheduling tastings, booking the contract and updating our budget and payment plans, buying a cake topper, knife and server, and adjusting the final order depending on the final guest count are all tasks in the Baker category.šŸ§

If you're going for a floral wedding cake, be sure to include it in your flower budget. And don't forget to consider any cake table arrangements as well.

06/01/2022

Catering costs are usually presented as "per-person" charges, sometimes abbreviated in wedding brochures as "pp" after the amount. But be awareā€”the per-person charge often doesn't include everything: Tax and the gratuity (sometimes called the "service charge") might be extra, and there may also be separate per-person charges for the meal, drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and even setup. So your actual per-person charge might end up being considerably more than you expect. Bring your calculator along when meeting with potential caterers to help you arrive at the real bottom line.

There's more to consider. Nowadays, many caterers offer a range of services in addition to catering. Some are actual "event producers," providing props, special effects, dĆ©corā€”in other words, complete event design. They might also be able to assist in finding a location, coordinating your affair, or lining up vendors. One thing a caterer can't do, however, is cook up a 5-course Beef Wellington dinner for $20 per person. When planning your menu, be realistic about what you can serve given your budget and the size of your guest list.
A lot of factors come into play when selecting a caterer, so don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to!

Flowers, flowers, and more flowers.

With so many for one event, it is easy to get overwhelmed by all the possibilities, but they can be broken down into simple categories: Personals (think what gets worn or carried), Ceremony, and Reception.

Personal Flowers includes:
Bride's Bouquet
Floral Crowns and Hair Flowers
Bridesmaids' Bouquets
Tossing Bouquet
Flower Girl's Bouquet or Basket of Petals or Pomander
Groom's Boutonniere
Other Boutonnieres
Corsages
Nosegays

Ceremony Flowers includes:
Entryway
Welcome Table Arrangements
Altar/Chuppah Arrangements
Pew/Chair Arrangements
Aisle Decorations
Tossing Petals for Guests

Reception Flowers includes:
Cocktail Table Arrangements
Bar Arrangements
Es**rt Card Table Arrangements
Centrepieces
Newlywedā€™s Chair Decorations
Wedding Cake Flowers
Buffet Table/Food Station Arrangements
Lounge Area Arrangements
Powder Room Decorations
Getaway Car Arrangements

Even if choosing not to do all the florals it is still useful to know where the main opportunities are. šŸŒ¼

Weather Policies ā˜‚ļø

Specific vendors might have policies in their contracts that make it so that they cannot or will not perform their duties. If the vendors like the bartenders, catering team or performers are forced to be out in the direct sun all day or work in heavy rain or storms, they will likely have a right to end their contract (which I think is quite fair). Confirm whether they require certain things like tents for their equipment or sun shade before finalizing the layout and rental orders.

Dress up your table surfaces also known as, Tablescapes.

Tablescapes is a design term for the landscape of the table - what will be on the table tops.

When planning design you will need to find images that showcase the colours of the linens and the general style of the centrepieces as they carry throughout the space. It will help to envision how the different styles could all look together.

Carefully consider the colour palette here too, and the texture of the linens. Even how the stationery like menus, place cards and table numbers will be situated on the tables should have images to back up your ideas.
