Good morning, and welcome back to with !

Today's fun fact is about the month of October!

In ancient Rome, October used to be the eighth month of the year, with "octo" coming from the Latin word for eight. This is because the original 12 month calender created in 45 BC. (called the Julian Calendar) began on March 25th! The current Georgian Calendar, which accounts for leap years and starts in January, was adopted in England on January 1st, 1752. This choice allowed the passing of the year across Europe to be consistent.

Prior to the Julian Calendar, Old England referred to October as either Winmotha (the month wine was made), or Winterfylleth! At that time, the first full moon of what we now call October used to mark the beginning of winter!

Did you know, September 27th is National Chocolate Milk Day?

Chocolate milk first appeared in Jamaica! As far back as 1494, a warm milk beverage has been made using fresh cacao and cinnamon. By the 17th century, Hans Sloan became the first documented person to provide a cold chocolate milk beverage!

We at Can Do Events hope your weekend is happy and safe. Enjoy some chocolate milk today!

Good afternoon and welcome back to with !

Did you know that the Autumn Equinox is this weekend? Specifically, Sunday September 22nd around 8:44 am!

This special day marks the official first day of fall! It is also when our Earth's axis reaches a rotational point of not pointing toward, or away, from the sun. This results in equal lengths of day and night!

World wide, many different cultural celebrations will occur around an Equinox. Also, due to an increase in geomagnetic activity, viewing the Northern Lights becomes much more likely!

We hope your official start to the fall season is happy and safe!

Good morning and welcome back to with !

Today is Friday the 13th, and we will be taking a look at the origin behind the superstition!

Some people associate a religious connotation, and others believe the arrest of the Knights of Templar in 1307 prompted the unlucky date.

However, it seems the oldest mention comes from Norse mythology! The story says when Loki, the god of mischief, gate-crashed a banquet in Valhalla, the number of guests becomes 13. The mischief caused by Loki at this dinner ends in disaster, and eventually this story spreads from Scandinavia through Europe! This is when the story of the Knights of Templar, and the Biblical connotations, add to the superstition of Friday the 13th being unlucky!

Do you feel that this day has a special meaning, or is a time to be careful? Let us know down below, and have a safe and happy weekend!

Good morning, and welcome back to with !

School has begun, and soon enough, the autumn season will be upon us! Today, we would like to share some information behind the chemistry of color in our beautiful local trees!

Chlorophyll is the chemical which makes tree leaves green. As the seasons change and temperatures cool down, trees begin breaking down chlorophyll. This process creates the chemical pigments that are responsible for the vibrant ambers, reds and yellows of autumn! A few of these pigments are called carotene, and xanthophylls.

Did you know some of these chemicals are the same ones that give carrots (beta-carotenes) and egg yolks (luteins) their colours?

Good morning, and welcome back to with !

With the Salmon Derby wrapping up in Owen Sound, today we are sharing salmon facts!

Did you know, salmon are anadromous, which means they live in both fresh water, and salt water? Salmon hatch in fresh water, and move to the ocean after several months to years. When it's time to spawn, salmon come back to the same freshwater location they hatched in!

Salmon are also considered a Keystone Species. This means that the surrounding ecosystem experiences a disproportionate impact based on the volume of salmon in the area! Too many, or too few, creates a greater environmental change than many other animal species.

We at Can Do Events hope you all enjoyed your summer, have a safe and happy back to school season!

Have you seen the maiden from Spirit Rock? Do you know of any other local legends? Let us know in the comments below!
