The MAC - McMillan Arts Centre

The MAC - McMillan Arts Centre The McMillan Arts Centre is a community arts centre serving the Oceanside area of Vancouver Island, The MAC started life as the McMillan School in 1913.

Mothers of WWI soldiers erected a cenotaph directly in front of the school building, which sits at the intersection of McMillan Street and Memorial Avenue. Trees were planted along Memorial Avenue up to the frontage of the school building and remain to this day a beautiful boulevard leading to the Arts Centre. The school closed in 1976 and the Oceanside Community Arts Council took ownership in 198

6, continuing the tradition of education and arts through the School for Creative Arts. Galleries, gift shop and studios celebrate and support local artists work. The Makerspace organization and the Metal Arts Guild share the lower level of the MAC.

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS. There is nothing more beautiful than a hand blown glass bowl or vase which shimmers as light passes through the colours of glass.
Glass artist Toni Johnson studied glass blowing at Sheridan College in a program started by Robert Held. She is a member of the Stolo Nation and lives in Campbell River.

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS We have a fabulous selection of wooden boxes handcrafted by talented Oceanside artists in our Gift Shop. Each box features the warmth of exotic and domestic wood. The beautiful colours of these different types of wood have been crafted into practical boxes that make a welcome decorative piece.

For our last Artists Opening Reception of 2024 we turned it into a Christmas party with mulled wine, spiced apple cider punch and trays of yummy appetizers arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree. Close to 70 people turned up to celebrate the artists and the season. What a great afternoon!

Announcing our Annual General Meeting next Wednesday Nov 27th at 7pm. We'll have progress reports and board elections, but more important will be the strategic planning for 2025 and beyond.
We developed a big capacity to grow, gather and distribute fresh food to our neighbours, so it will be exciting to talk about where to go from here with all this momentum. Opportunities to get involved and get creative with our local food systems will be available.

Our Story

The MAC is a place to appreciate the arts and to extend your own artistic skills. It is a venue for art exhibitions, music performances, storytelling and other arts and culture events. The MAC is also home to our School for Creative Arts and offers workshops and classes including our popular Art Bites series designed to encourage everyone to explore a new art form.

The MAC is operated by the Oceanside Community Arts Council (OCAC). This is a volunteer organization and there are many volunteer opportunities available. We have many events happening throughout the year and they will be promoted on this page as well as on our website and Instagram. We also have a wide variety of workshops and classes for all ages, from beginners to experienced artists. If you are looking to organize your own event, contact the MAC has rental space available suitable for a variety of needs.
