Happy International Women’s Day!

In a male dominated industry, being the “sound girl” can seem like a novelty.

I’m so grateful for the clients who trust in me to entertain their guests, and create the right soundtrack from their big wedding celebration. Thank you for supporting a woman in the music industry.

In 2023, the seventh annual report, “Inclusion in the Recording Studio?,” on the music industry from Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, sponsored by Spotify, provides an in-depth analysis of inclusion on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart. The study examined the gender of artists, songwriters, and producers across 1,100 songs from 2012 to 2023. The investigation also analyzed how often underrepresented women worked across those three roles. Additionally, the study assessed every Grammy® nominee receiving recognition in the categories of Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Producer of the Year for the same time frame as well as the inaugural Songwriter of the Year category.

The share of female artists involved in last year’s biggest chart hits in the US has increased to 35%, according to the study. n 2023, the number reached the highest it has been for any year going back to 2012.

The study also examined the Grammy nominations in full, noting a significant increase in the main categories, but pointing out that not a single woman was up for producer of the year.

Smith credits the rise to “the work of numerous groups working to support women in music”, adding that “advocacy and activism is propelling change in the industry”.

May we continue to advocate for equal opportunity in all industries, including music production and entertainment.
