It’s Mental Illness Awareness Week. 🧠🤍

Mental Illness is not always visible. It isn’t always seen, I spent way to many years hiding my struggles. I’m longer silent and scared.

I am not invisible.
I have an invisible illness.

Mental Illnesses can be almost entirely invisible. I made this image over a month ago and I’ve been holding off posting. I wanted to make a big moving and powerful statement but I don’t feel loud, inspirational or powerful today. I don’t have words today and I don’t want to feel like I NEED to have wordsy words to share. I made this because i was processing this idea of invisible illnesses. If I’m honest I made it after I took picture number 2. I was feeling very alone and misunderstood. Making things helps me work through my moods. I truly believe that creating , sharing and showing up here for myself is enough.

Having an invisible illness is so so hard for so so many reasons.

I am not invisible.
I have an invisible illness.

That’s it.
Thats what I want to say today. That’s the post.

Stay Messy and Beautiful,
Shaley xo

I am BEYOND EXCITED to share this conversation with you all. Elizabeth Nguyen if is a psychiatrist, author and all around delightful human being. Although Elizabeth does not live with bipolar disorder, she has family and works with bipolar youth and adults regularly. It was such a treat to talk about Elizabeth’s debut book ‘Aloha Vietnam’. It is a book with a main character that has bipolar disorder and is not a stereotype or a villain. Fair and kind res presentation of folks with bipolar disorder is rare in most of the non fiction I’ve read. I want everyone to read it because I believe that it will help us bipolar warriors see ourselves in the character of Ahn as well as educate those who don’t understand bipolar disorder.

I loved asking the questions we had for a psychiatrist that understands mood disorders. Elizabeth’s thoughtful answers both taught and confirmed me.

Be sure to check back to listen very soon!!!!

Elizabeth Nguyen, MD was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents were refugees from Vietnam who arrived in Honolulu in 1975 at the end of the Vietnam War.
She received her BA from Stanford University in Human Biology, her MD from Northwestern University, and her Psychiatry Residency and Child Psychiatry Fellowship training at UC Davis. She started her career in community mental health, with specific interests in cross-cultural psychiatry, the intersection of spirituality and mental health, and the healing power of water and the natural world. She is currently in private practice in Davis, CA. Aloha Vietnam is her first book and her first novel.

I can’t even 💔💔💔💔💔 I cried all morning. It hit hard. I remember watching him on SYTYCD. I watch his dancing videos as well as his wife’s when I was severely depressed. Tea & I did their family live dance workouts during lockdown.

Please please don’t be afraid to talk about su***de ideation, thoughts & plans. If you are worried ask! I interviewed a su***de attempt survivor and one of the things that stopped her was a friend called when she was on a cliff & checked in. She told her that she cared & hoped to see her tomorrow. Knowing that one person cared and wanted to see her again stopped her from jumping. Check in on your friends. Even the strong, seemingly happy, successful ones. You never know!

Repost •
“ I hope he found freedom and peace in breaking through his last cloud.

If you follow my stories you know - I’m a dancer. Dance is a huge part of my life that I don’t often share in my feed, but it owns my heart as much as drawing does.

I’ve always admired Twitch and how he tied humor and pulsating love through his movement. I couldn’t help but smile and move every time I saw him doing the same. He mirrored my joy of dance right back to me. I was even walking out of dance class today when I saw the news.

I know, it’s natural, as a society to want to jump into this important conversation when we lose someone this way - especially one where the signs were not clear (to us - strangers who didn’t know him personally.) it’s confusing and we want to find answers by talking about prevention. We get fearful we may be missing signs of those we know, personally. My point, is that yes all the conversations we are opening up today ARE important. It’s important we know what to really look for and how to really reach out for help when we find ourselves no longer able to see beyond the dark black swallow.

With that being said, today I just want to remember the impact he left. I don’t want him to just be known by how he left - but what he brought us. Tomorrow we can talk about prevention- today let’s talk about how amazing he was and how he inspired and loved so many.” 💖
