Thanks to Janis Cleugh for this article about Roy Forbes next Saturday night! Get your tickets today!
He’s a little bit country.
He’s a little bit rock ’n roll.
And folk and soul and R&B and pop and jazz and the blues.
“Genres have always been a challenge with me,” the legendary B.C. musician Roy Forbes said. “It’s been that way for 50 years. I love all kinds of music. It’s hard to pin me down.”
From his days as Bim and one-third of the band UHF, with Shari Ulrich and Bill Henderson, to his country music covers and Christmas tunes, Forbes spans nearly every style in his songwriting and in performing.
And on Saturday, April 27, music lovers can hear him play and tell stories at his one-man show that closes the second season of the Inlet Theatre Music Series — a production organized by Forbes’ longtime friend Bill Sample and his partner Darlene Cooper, both Port Moody residents.
In an interview with the Tri-City News, Forbes said he’s honoured to have been selected to wrap up the season that has featured top acts such as Dee Daniels, Norman Foote and Blue Moon Marquee.
A North Vancouver resident, Forbes said his acoustic show at the Inlet Theatre follows two sold-out performances in Courtenay and Victoria on April 12 and 13 — “just warm-ups for Port Moody,” he said with a laugh.
He’ll be playing about half of his album Edge of Blue, released in 2020, as well as his hits from the past half century plus a new song, too
He’ll also play "Lifting My Heart," a song he wrote with UHF that’s now highlighted in Dianne Whelan’s new feature documentary 500 Days in the Wild.
Although it’s the same set list as his Vancouver Island gigs, “it’s not the same show. Every time I sing a song, it’s slightly different vocally … It’s a fluid situation.”
Being alone on stage is how Forbes likes it, he said, comparing a solo performance to a “tightrope walk. I’m playing the bass and the lead parts. I am the band.”
Still, “I’m the most alive when I’m on stage. It’s a creative act in itself. If you can push all the stuff aside and be in that two-set moment, who knows what’s going to happen and how I sing any given song?”
Forbes said his spring tour gives him a chance to not only promote his work, but also to connect with his audience, many of whom have followed the JUNO Award nominated singer–songwriter through the years.
"We can’t think of a better way to wrap up the second year of the Inlet Music Series than with a concert by the great Roy Forbes, aka Bim," Sample told the Tri-City News today, April 18.
"Thanks to all who came out and supported live music in Port Moody and we look forward to seeing you Sept. 21 as we kick off Year 3."

We are thrilled with the news that Port Moody City Council has agreed to support the Inlet Theatre Music Series for another 2 years!
The shows will go on in Port Moody.
On Tuesday, March 26, council voted to extend for two more years an agreement to waive rental fees at Inlet Theatre for a series of musical concerts.

In a report, Devin Jain, the city’s manager of cultural services, said the Inlet Theatre Music Series, organized by longtime musicians and promoters Bill Sample and Darlene Cooper, has “filled a gap within the cultural landscape of Port Moody.”

He said the up to eight concerts a year presented during the fall, winter and spring months have “brought a consistent and professional music series to the community.”

During a presentation to council on Feb. 27, Cooper said several of the concerts have been sellouts, drawing patrons from as far away as Bellingham, Wash.
“We’ve put Port Moody on the map as a bit of cultural hub,” she said, adding the series has also been well-received by the artists.
They’ve included local acts like the gypsy jazz ensemble Van Django and touring award-winners like Blue Moon Marquee.

Cooper said the quality of the musicians can’t be supported by ticket revenue alone and the city’s continued commitment, as well as help from sponsors and a corp of volunteers backstage and at the front of the house will keep the series affordable. Prices for advance tickets for shows in the series’ second season ranged from $20 to $35.

Jain said while the Inlet Theatre can accommodate only about 200 patrons for concerts, its technical features and acoustics have made it “a wonderful venue for live music.”
But, he added, the city doesn’t have the resources, staff or industry connections to be able to take full advantage of the facility on its own.
Jain said waiving the rental fee for the music series for another two years will cost about $3,712 annually.
“This is a good return on investment to the city and residents,” he said, adding Port Moody will also continue to promote the series in its regular community newsletter, on its website, social media channels and digital signs.

There is one more show remaining in this season's series; Canadian folk-rocker Roy Forbes appears April 27.

Here's a little interview about Dee Daniels by Janis Cleugh.

*Be sure to get your tickets soon as they are going fast!!

- Dee Daniels knew she had become a big fish in a little pond.

She just needed a nudge from LeRoy Neiman to get her out.

The American artist was in Seattle to do a painting for the Mariners baseball team when he heard Daniels do an impromptu performance at a reception hosted by a mutual friend — an art dealer — in his honour.

Neiman had been a fan of Daniels, but had never heard her sing live.

Afterwards, he immediately pulled her aside and asked, “What are you doing here?”
She had to leave for a bigger city, the Minneapolis native insisted.
“I knew he was right,” Daniels remembered, “but I wasn’t sure where to go: I didn’t want New York or L.A. so I moved to Europe. And it was the best thing that I could have ever done for myself.”

From 1982 to ’87, while based in The Netherlands and Belgium, she grew personally and professionally, Daniels said, performing with top-notch jazz, blues and gospel acts around Europe and with touring bands from North America.

She was the vocalist on the bills of such legends as the Sir Roland Hanna Trio and the Tommy Flanagan Trio, among many others.

But after five years of the grind and knowing her parents in Seattle were getting older, Daniels returned to be closer to home.
“I started thinking about what it all meant,” she recalled. “If I don’t have someone to share this with, what does it mean? I worked around the globe. I saw incredible places and met incredible people, but when you come home to an empty house, it’s just you. There’s no nobody.”
In 1985, following an invitation to perform in Vancouver, when she met her soon-to-be husband, Daniels decided make Canada her new home.
Since then, she’s performed extensively; recorded; collaborated with artists, universities and jazz festivals; and reached out with charities.

Next week, Daniels will be in Port Moody to sing jazz, blues and gospel standards, as well as a few original tunes off her album with Denzal Sinclaire, Let It Shine! Let It Shine!.
The recording was released last year by the Grammy award-winning Cellar Music Group — founded by saxophonist Cory Weeds of Coquitlam.
Her Feb. 24 program in Port Moody “gives me an opportunity to share an assortment of material that I really love,” she said.
Her performance with
Miles Black on piano,
Andre LaChance on bass
Dave Robbins on drums
is part of the Inlet Theatre Music Series organized by veteran Port Moody musicians Bill Sample, a pianist whom Daniels met shortly after landing in Canada, and Darlene Cooper, with whom Daniels has also worked with on Marcus Moseley Music projects.

"We are thrilled to present Dee Daniels in concert at the Inlet Theatre,” Sample told the Tri-City News.
“Dee performs in major venues all over the world so to hear her in the City of the Arts in an intimate setting, it's definitely a special treat.”

Laila Biali is comin' to town!
Huge thanks to our season sponsor - Placemaker Communities Inc.

Janis Cleugh at Tri-City News writes:

Juno award-winning jazz musician Laila Biali has performed with the likes of Sting, Chris Boti and Suzanne Vega. She'll be in Port Moody on Saturday, Dec. 16.

North Vancouver native Laila Biali has been on the road a lot this year. And tomorrow, Dec. 12, the Juno award-winning jazz musician kicks off the western Canadian leg of her tour that includes only one stop in the Lower Mainland: City of Port Moody.

Biali, who is also the host of CBC Music’s Saturday Night Jazz, will be on the Inlet Theatre stage on Saturday, Dec. 16 to perform new and original tunes she composed during her Banff Centre residency in a show called Wintersongs & Holiday Classics — a preview of her full album release next year.
The concert will be the biggest to date for Port Moody musicians Bill Sample and Darlene Cooper, who launched their Inlet Theatre Music Series last fall.
Speaking to the Tri-City News from Toronto today, Dec. 11, Biali said she looks forward to returning home to Metro Vancouver, albeit for a short visit.
It’ll be the second time the singer–pianist–arranger has played Port Moody, “which is such a little jewel in the Greater Vancouver area. The only times I would come out to the Tri-Cities were for soccer games on Sundays, so to get a more meaningful time in this beautiful city, that’s very special and unique to me.”
Biali promises a full program for her Port Moody crowd, starting the first half with Wintersongs accompanied by a string trio that includes Rebekah Wolkstein (violin) and Katrina Chitty (viola).
The second half will be more informal, she said, with “the old familiar fare” for the holidays, including a rendition of My Favourite Things.
Appearing with her on tour are saxophonist Jane Bunnett, bassist Dan Fortin and drummer Ben Wittman, Biali’s husband.
As well, the ensemble will play a tribute to the Canadian icon Joni Mitchell in honour of her 80th birthday. Mitchell’s music, Biali said, has a jazz “sensibility” that gives rise to storytelling.
“She’s a national treasure,” Biali said.
Sample told the Tri-City News that Biali is a rising star herself, having sold out venues in Europe and Asia; released nine albums (including Your Requests this year); and collaborated with the likes of Sting, Chris Boti and Suzanne Vega.
“Laila Biali’s clearly on the short track to global stardom,” Sample said.
“You can catch her right here in Port Moody at what will be her only performance of Wintersongs in the entire Lower Mainland on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.”
For tickets at $35 to see Laila Biali on Dec. 16 at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr., Port Moody), go to Eventbrite.ca. Tickets are $45 at the door, if available. For more details, visit portmoodymusic.com.

This Saturday in Port Moody at the beautiful Inlet Theatre … Laila Biali

Thanks, Wave 98.3, for this shout out!

Getting to Know Our Stars
10 Questions for Laila Biali

Laila Biali brings her Wintersongs and Holiday classics concert to Port Moody’s Inlet Theatre this Saturday December 16th.

1. How old were you when you first started playing piano?
I was three and a half (according to my mom) when I first climbed up onto the piano bench and started plunking out the melody to Sesame Street. I started formal piano lessons in North Vancouver when I was four.
2. Who was/is your biggest musical inspiration?
I love Joni Mitchell's music so much – her storytelling, the melodies, her phrasing. There's the feeling of Jazz in what she does. I have many other favourites, too – Sting (who I've been fortunate to work with), Björk, Keith Jarrett, Bono, Bobby McFerrin. The list goes on…
3. Where do you make your home?
Toronto, but I’m originally from Vancouver and spent a lot of time in Brooklyn (7.5 years)
4. Do you have any pets?
I don’t! I love animals but I have allergies. Our 13-year-old son is obsessed with dogs, so we often go to local dog parks to “dog watch.” He especially loves the Shiba Inu breed.
5. What is the best concert/gig you have ever done?
Singing background vocals for Sting at Durham Cathedral in England (where they filmed the Harry Potter movies).
6. What is the best concert you have ever attended?
Toronto Mass Choir (they’re on my latest single, Joy to the World) performed at a local church and blew off the roof. People were dancing in the aisles. It was AMAZING.
7. Do you have an all-time favourite song or album?
I absolutely love Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah – especially how k.d. Lang sings it. That’s my favourite song. For albums, I have many favorites: Björk’s Vespertine, Norma Winstone’s Somewhere Called Home, Earth Wind & Fire Greatest Hits, Vienna Boys Choir (for this time of year), The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and many more…
8. What musician would you still most like to work with?
Bono. I’d just love to talk to him about his career and the incredible humanitarian work he’s done.
9. If you weren't a musician what would you be?
A naturopath.
10. What is your favourite thing about Vancouver
The mountains and hiking!

FAMILY SHOW at INLET THEATRE - NOV 26th at 3:30pm

Janis Cleugh wrote:
Juno award-winning international children’s entertainer, Norman Foote, appears at the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody on Sunday, Nov. 26th at 3:30 for a fun family matinee sing-along.
Norman Foote, a North Vancouver resident who grew up in Squamish, will be on stage at the Inlet Theatre to play his classics, as well as try out a few new fresh songs that he’ll include on his upcoming CD recording.
Foote will appear with his longtime collaborator Bill Sample, a Port Moody resident who, with his partner and fellow musician Darlene Cooper, is inviting top-notch acts to the venue as part of their Inlet Theatre Music Series.
Foote is the third performer in the second annual run, following Cayla Brooke in September and Blue Moon Marquee last month,. He will also have on stage the kids and junior choirs from the Coastal Sound Music Academy.
Earlier this week, Foote came out to the Tri-Cities for a rehearsal under the artistic direction of Diana Clark.
“She is such a dedicated musician,” Foote told the Tri-City News yesterday, Nov. 16.
“I’ve worked with her several times. The kids nail my material.”
Foote said he enjoys having children’s choirs pipe in as they create a lot of energy for the crowd, which responds.
On one of his new tracks, for example, he has animal sounds and families are invited to imitate Canadian wildlife.
He has a song about a lost Sasquatch, too, who befriends a human boy; his parents send the Sasquatch to school.
“But something happens at the school,” Foote teased, “so you’ll have to see the show to find out what happened.”
Foote’s touring schedule has been quite busy this past year — “doubling up since COVID ended, and I’m thrilled to be busy,” he said — with 45 concerts around B.C. and in Alberta, California and Nevada since January 2023.
Recently, Foote created the music for this year’s North Pole Express in Squamish, a project he worked on in 2022.
Sample told the Tri-City News that he and Cooper look forward to sharing the Inlet spotlight with their friend.
“This will be the first time we’ve featured a kids’ performer, but it must be noted that parents and grandparents are big fans of Norman, too,” Sample said

Norman Foote is at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr., inside Port Moody City Hall) on Sunday, Nov. 26. Doors opens at 3 p.m. for the 3:30 p.m. show. For tickets at $20, visit Eventbrite.ca ($30 at door if not sold out).
