Preconceptions.
Many people believe a horse must be ridden, that it was born to be ridden and that there is no life for a horse beyond use. Nothing further could be truth. I can tell you, almost NO HORSE cares whether it's ridden ever again. There are horses that are fine with it, that even LOVE IT, yes, and enjoy the outings and time with their person. But what if they could have outings and time together, without riding?
Would you be ok with that? Seriously, think about that... because before I had any horse at all, I was talking to a rescue about adoption and they asked, 'do you need to ride?" and I thought... "no". I do love riding, but some of my dearest equine friends have never worn a saddle, I've not been on their back, and we have a very close friendship, a friendship I can't imagine being without. But before I was asked that, I just sort of assumed that I needed my adopted horse 'to ride'.
So yes, adoption for riding is fun, but maybe there is a different way to look at this. Bomb sniffing with your dog may be fun, too, as an optional activity, but most of us just hang out with our dogs, enjoying each others company.
We have created an area here we call 'the outdoor living room', with a picnic table for the humans, and grass and scratching posts for the horses, and we all just hang out in the summer. Different paddocks are connected farther out, like a ring, so we can let horses into this central area as we choose. And we all just spend time in a place that is comfortable for all. It's not set up as a 'gym' for anyone, there is no purpose beyond socializing.
It's fun.
There are many horses that enjoy humans, and attention, and would be very happy in a small herd with 1-3 horses and a few people as members of their tribe. Maybe their knees are blown or their arthritis is bad or they were never trained, and are now in their teens and that moment has passed, but they are intelligent, gentle, social, sensitive, not to mention beautiful, potential friends, for you.
Are there enough homes for horses?
There would be... if more humans accept and allow themselves to enjoy horses without riding.
Think about it.
That few acres you try to maintain all summer? A few horses would love to call that home.
Those few extra pounds you need to lose, and you hate that ugly exercise bike in the basement? Put up a small barn and clean it, while hanging outside with your equine friends.
Those veggies you need to eat more of? They would grow great with the fertilizer your horses will help make for you!
That carpet and couch you need to clean inside because of your indoor pets? Your horses won't bother you in the house, and will get you outside more to enjoy life and the planet.
Horses are closer to nature than any human, and will be the bridge you need to re-connect to the natural world. You will love grooming them, playing ground games, and sharing your secrets. You will love having horses in your life, no riding necessary.
Think about it.
Some just need permission to go ahead and love them.
