The Beginning

Historically, Festival Hall was a part of the Armory known as the shooting range and was transformed into an assembly hall. It later became a gymnasium used by Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. In 1988 the gymnasium was leased to the Red Deer Folk Festival Society. With the support of member groups, the City of Red Deer, the Government of Canada and many volunteers, the gymnasium was renovated to create a warm and attractive community facility. Festival Hall was chosen as its name to reflect the origins of the Society. The west side of the Armory is now the Memorial Centre theatre. The Red Deer International Folk Festival changed its name to the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society in 1996 to better represent its member groups which include many of Red Deer's ethno- cultural Societies.
