Subject: Urgent Meeting for Kent Curling Club Members – Update on Ice Preparation and Liquor License
Date: Thursday, November 28, 7:00 PM
Location: Rexton Recreation Centre (formerly Ice Shack)
Greetings Members
We encourage all of our members to attend the meeting this coming Thursday. The Board needs your feedback on how to proceed regarding having bar service available as well as providing an update on when curling can commence.
Bar Service
For an additional $1,000 a month, Five River has agreed that we could request a Liquor License, use their bar but we would be responsible to manage it. This would include purchasing the liquor, selling and keeping the proceeds of all sales.
At $1,000/month, this cost will create an even greater loss for the curling club as we are only allowed to sell liquor to our members and guests. Most days we have only 32 curlers and at that level it isn’t possible to break even. Their original request was for $1,500 and it was reduced when we advised we couldn’t accept it. We also advised we were disappointed in the $1,000 as well.
What we need from you is our opinion on:
1) Do we pay the $1,000 per month and have bar service?
2) Do we go dry this year, and get a special event license just for our mixed and men’s bonspiels?
3) If we go dry, will we lose curlers?
When can we expect to curl
As many of you may be aware, the reason for the delay is that the Brine Pump needed to be replaced or repaired. What caused the delay:
1) Five Rivers was made aware of this early this summer, however, with staff turnover the Village didn’t act upon this until board members of the curling club met with Five Rivers in early September to inquire about the pump.
2) To our surprise we were made aware that they hadn’t ordered the pump yet.
3) Based on our encouragement they quickly adjourned a Council meeting to seek approval to have a new pump ordered.
4) This was done and a new pump was ordered in mid September with an expected installation date of November 19th. This would have allowed us to begin curling the first week of December.
5) To date the pump has not arrived and Yvon Williams has been following up with Five Rivers requesting the Mayor to pressure the company to expedite the delivery of the pump. As of this past Friday evening we haven’t had an update.
6) Once the pump is installed it will take 10-12 days to get the ice ready for play, so at best curling beginning the second week of December.
We look forward to your feedback this coming Thursday. Thank you.
