Sofiya Mukhachova – Artist Statement
Why are we in the Universe? In its astonishing vastness where we know so little and mean so less, you feel so helpless but still assuming there is a place where everything is possible. With your thoughts and ideas you can send them as a signal into this black void in hopes for it to materialize and not get drown in eternity. You expect your signal would become a part of the whole and the infinite, where everything is subject to a yet unknown law of being. Where everything bad and terrible loses its meaning and transforms into a pixel, line, beauty and into pure light.

Sabine Simon – Artist Biography
Sabine Simons is an East Vancouver abstract artist who uses a variety of media, paints, materials, textures, and colours in her work. When starting a new piece on the floor, a table, or an easel she usually decides on a palette and then lets her intuition be her guide. At times, Sabine has a certain theme in mind, a landscape perhaps; at other times, her work is completely free-flowing, without a set plan, and themes emerge unexpectedly. Occasionally, she works on several pieces at the same time, and she finds that this process helps her to loosen up, break free from conventional representational norms, allowing her to let creative ideas develop unrestrainedly.

Colours and how they interact with each other and added elements such as shapes and lines are an important part of Sabine=s process. Through layering, blending, scraping back, incising, line work and other techniques, she strives to create pieces that show the history of the work. For Sabine, the most important goal she endeavours to achieve with her art is to express and stir emotions. Since she considers herself an optimist, she likes to keep these emotions positive.

Maude Ren – Artist Biography
I am a multimedia artist originally from Fujian, China, now living in Richmond, Canada since 2023. I graduated from Quanzhou Dongfeng Art School in Fujian, China in 1999. My art practice encompasses drawing, painting, photography, and video. I have participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in China. My first show, titled “The Starry Night of Quanzhou” was held in my hometown Quanzhou. Last year, I participated in a group show, “The City of Treasured Gods: Quanzhou Art Collective Exhibition.” During this time, I created multi-material works using local natural materials such as oyster shells and colored clay. Notable pieces include “Rising Dragon,” “Heritage Maritime Silk Road Scroll,” and “Nine-Dragon Wall of Quanzhou,” which garnered significant attention both online and offline, with related reports in the media. I have also been commissioned by various institutions and companies to create public art. In addition, I work in graphic design, creating logos and mascots for multiple organizations and companies. My self-created series “Wobbly Neck Quanzhou People” has been featured in newspaper and TV interviews multiple times and has been licensed for commercial use by several companies, including well-known Chinese enterprises such as Poly Real Estate and Peak Group. This series has also become a cultural icon of Quanzhou Old Town. I have received awards for both my art and design work, and some of my pieces have been collected by private collectors and companies.

Grace Tao – Artist Statement
Art is an expression of emotion. If the process of touching oneself can also be conveyed to the viewer, it is an effective and silent resonance. Like many artists, the rich experience in life is my source of inspiration. Years of immigrant life, family life, and work experience have continuously enriched what I want to say as “painting”.

Post-Impressionism, Byzantium and David Hockney are the schools and painters that have a great influence on me at this stage. Their mechanisms, colours and compositions are never boring to watch.

Machinery is one of the subjects I like to paint very much, because it is very similar to my experience of life. It has both the layered beauty of the structure, which is fascinating, and at the same time, it also makes people trapped in some degree of irresistible operation. The process of painting machinery is like an outlet for emotions. By 2024, I began to add another favorite element-nature, such as wood and flowers. This sense of picture makes the expression more complete: real and unreal, perfect and imperfect, the entanglement of freedom and discipline, the collision of nature and man-made, impossible connection, contradiction and harmony.

I once wondered why the people in Rembrandt's paintings all wore these uniform black suits with white lace cuffs. I felt, at the time, that in the 20th century, people had more freedom to express themselves. Then I happened upon some family photographs from the 1960's. 17th Century Holland Revisited.

Paul Pettiford had once been a dancer in the Alvin Ailey dance troupe of New York City. When I met him, he taught dance at The Three Schools of Art in Toronto, where I worked and studied. June Yun
Although art is her passion and painting is her meditation, June Yun considers herself a mixed media artist. Besides painting and drawing, she works with printmaking, video and installation.

During the past decade, water and clouds are the other predominant subjects of her art. She uses them as metaphors conveying aesthetics of her Chinese background: simplicity, tranquility, and solitary. Oriental people’s perception and admiration of water have informed the wisdom of the East. That is also why traditional Chinese art assumed ink and water as the medium and the language of landscape paintings. The mercurial forms of water and its reflections build a dreamlike mirage on June Yun’s canvases. Floating clouds are another form of water. They seem vague, unreachable, ethereal and even intangible for some humans, yet June Yun can transcribe her fleeing memories through the water, clouds and mist in her art.
“Your mind is like a beautiful pool of water reflecting the world around it.” – Hugh Kidd
