The “Neither Mountains nor Water” series delves into contemplative abstraction by blending painting and printmaking techniques to evoke the fluidity of time and the emotional resonance of nature. This body of work, created as part of my MFA thesis, draws on Chinese ink painting principles, moving beyond literal representation to capture the inner essence of landscapes rather than their outward forms. Through the use of an earthy palette and bold calligraphic strokes, as well as unconventional methods for spontaneous expression, I aim to strike a balance between structure and fluidity. The layering process reflects a journey of attachment and release, embracing imperfections and evolving through each stage. Ultimately, this series blends ancient Eastern philosophies with contemporary abstraction, reimagining landscapes in a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation.

“Painting these coastal vistas is not just about representing what I see, but expressing how they make me feel.”
– Kai Liu

The journey of an artist is often reflected in the brushstrokes they leave behind. For Kai Liu, each cloud and coastal horizon carries a story of personal growth, cultural adaptation, and artistic discovery.

His latest series, Unforeseen Clouds, draws on his experiences immigrating to Canada and discovering his identity through art. Clouds – ephemeral and ever-changing – symbolize Liu’s reflections on transformation, adaptability, and the fluid balance between the known and the unknown.

The exhibition opens with a reception on January 9th at Lipont Gallery. Immerse yourself in Liu’s world of introspective beauty and connect with the artist firsthand!

“Destination” by Wu Yang
This stunning oil on canvas, “Destination (归宿),” by artist Wu Yang, captivates with its thought-provoking exploration of human vulnerability and resilience.

Measuring 36 x 36 inches (91.44 x 91.44 cm) and completed in 2023, this piece blends surrealism with symbolism. The delicate floral-patterned hands emerge from a stone form, suggesting a powerful contrast between strength and fragility. The submerged bed adds an air of mystery, evoking themes of displacement, memory, and a longing for stability.

This work reflects Wu Yang’s signature ability to blur the lines between reality and illusion, using her art to delve into the complexities of human nature.

Wu Yang, Two-Faced Person, 74.8 x 67 inches (190 x 170 cm), 2024

Woman and Two-Faced Person are two large-scale fabric installation works: graceful and unrestrained, straightforward and agile, chic and charming. Wu Yang, who was trained as a dyeing and weaving fashion designer, expresses the characteristics and spirit of women in a clear and confident way with her installations: “Women are not only orchids in the valley but also can be clang roses.” “Women are not only ocean water but also can be blazing flame.” Women are a hemisphere of life potential and an indisputable half of the world.

Wu Yang uses the power of art to break through obstacles, constantly explores, ponders the world, and uses her unique style to open a window of hope, allowing us to see new time and space, and new insights, wherever we look.

As we near the end of "Memories of Richmond – Paintings by Horae Jiang," we invite you to take a closer look at two standout works that embody the heart of this exhibition. 🎨

The first painting draws you into a serene yet complex interplay of earthy tones and abstract geometric forms. Warm browns, yellows, and greens evoke the feeling of groundedness, while the swirling lines suggest the fluidity of memory and emotion. This piece beautifully mirrors Horae Jiang’s personal journey, blending the tangible beauty of Richmond’s landscapes with the abstract nature of nostalgia and reflection.

The second painting bursts with vitality and energy, showcasing bold yellows, deep blues, and cosmic swirls of black and red. It feels alive, almost as if it’s in motion, capturing the vibrancy of Richmond while reflecting an introspective journey into the depths of memory. The dotted bridge and glowing homes subtly anchor this piece in the real world, while the swirling textures remind us of the emotional whirlwind that comes with rediscovery and change.

Together, these works tell a powerful story of transformation, healing, and inspiration—universal themes brought to life through Horae’s masterful touch.
