Claudia Shen – Artist Statement
I am an artist who explores the intricate relationships between nature, life, and human thought. My creative process is not confined to any specific material, allowing me the freedom to experiment. Still, I often gravitate towards ceramics and painting as primary means to express my concepts. These mediums enable me to capture both the fragility and strength of the human experience and the natural world.

Psychology plays a central role in my work. I am deeply fascinated by the complexities of the mind, particularly how emotions and subconscious thoughts shape our perception of reality. Through my art, I seek to explore these inner landscapes, inviting viewers to consider their mental processes and the societal challenges related to collective thought. My pieces often grapple with the psychological issues we encounter in everyday life, from personal struggles to broader societal concerns, whether through abstract representations or more literal depictions.

My work strives to evoke contemplation on the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of humans and the environment. By examining themes of symbiosis and the collective consciousness that binds society, I aim to create a space where viewers can pause and reflect on their place within these larger systems. Ultimately, my goal is to provoke thought, inspire dialogue, and foster a deeper awareness of the delicate balance that exists between life, nature, and the human mind.

Toface is my exploration of human complexity and the multitude of possibilities in life; it is also a journey of self-redemption. At one time, I struggled to find harmony within myself and a way to exist comfortably in the world, feeling at odds with my surroundings. Through the creation of these portraits—depicting people with whom I have shared emotional connections—I found a way to gradually shed the weight of my emotions.

Each completed work is a moment of setting aside these past burdens. As I look back on these paintings now, the memories remain vivid, but the emotional intensity has settled. I can revisit these moments with a sense of calm and acceptance.

Through the Toface series, I hope viewers can experience this process of “putting on” and “letting go” of emotions. Perhaps those feelings that once constrained us may ultimately soften, leading us toward inner freedom. My paintings are not solely personal expressions; they are also bridges to connect with those who have traveled similar emotional paths. Each face is a story, and each work is a journey. I hope these pieces resonate with viewers, evoking a shared sense of understanding and encouraging a more peaceful approach to one’s inner world.

Toface began ten years ago as a painting diary, a way to manage my anxiety and depression. In 2015, I transitioned to ceramic sculpture, and Toface evolved into a series of sculptures, paintings, and woven pieces. Over the years, it has become a reflection of my personal growth. This work also speaks to the quiet resilience of women, who bear immense responsibilities and pressures at every stage of life. Toface explores the balance between vulnerability and strength, embodying the journey of finding inner peace under the weight of societal and personal expectations. I hope Toface inspires others to reflect on mental health, recognize the often invisible burdens women carry, and draw strength and healing from the process.

Xin Wen – Artist Statement
All phenomena arise and cease in an instant. These paintings capture moments of impermanence, inspired by the constant flux of change. Through the body, which contains the five aggregates of form, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, I explore the ongoing stream of thoughts that are forged within the mind. Sometimes this process is natural, while at other times, it feels forced—an attempt to seize fleeting continuity.
