RETAINERS ARE NOT A SCAM

The idea of a “retainer” or “non-refundable deposit” is common in service-based industries, especially when booking wedding or event vendors. It’s meant to secure the vendor’s services for a specific date and prevent others from booking them, which is crucial in businesses that rely on limited availability and high demand.

Here’s a breakdown of the purpose:

1. Retainer as Commitment

A retainer, often called a non-refundable deposit, is a fee paid upfront to secure a vendor’s availability. By paying this fee, the client essentially “holds” the vendor’s time and commitment for a specific date, ensuring no other clients can book them for that period.

2. Holding Dates

For wedding and event vendors, each date is unique and valuable because they can typically only work one event on a given day. By holding a date with a retainer, the vendor is making a commitment to the client, turning down other potential work for that time. If the client cancels, the vendor might struggle to fill that date again, potentially losing revenue.

3. Compensation for Potential Loss

A non-refundable deposit helps the vendor cover lost opportunities and potential business costs if a booking is cancelled. Since the vendor has effectively committed their time and resources, the deposit ensures they’re compensated at least partially if the client backs out.

Why Non-Refundable?

For clients, non-refundable deposits can sometimes feel restrictive or unfair, especially if plans change. However, they’re a protective measure for the vendor, helping ensure their business remains viable even if some bookings fall through.

In essence, a retainer isn’t a scam but rather a way for vendors to guarantee their time and resources are valued and accounted for, given the unpredictable nature of booking-based work.

Leaving your corporate life to carve your own way is not the easy path, but for someone like me it was the obvious one. I was never one to stay doing a job unhappily. Nope, not for me.

I’m delighted to introduce our new hire today:

Welcome Jennifer Troietto, aka The Wedding Pixie!

I’ve worked alongside Jennifer for MANY weddings over the years, and I’ve seen her experience and attention to detail shine. She’s a full-time certified wedding planner who continues to evolve and streamline processes, and that’s what we’re all about here.

I had to have Jennifer as the wedding planner for my own wedding two years ago. She’s incredible at what she does, and even more an incredible human. I’m honoured to have her join the inTUNE team!

Jennifer’s words:

“I’ve been a full-time planner and coordinator for the past 10 years but I’ve been obsessed with weddings since I was 7. Yes, you read that right, since I was 7! My love for weddings began when I volunteered to be in the church choir for my Grade 2 teacher’s wedding. Every detail from the beautiful blooms to her fairy-tale dress left me with googly-eyes and wanting more!

A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS

I la-la-LOVE red wine, sprinkled donuts, anything and everything Disney, the scent of vanilla, people with positive vibes, daily walks along the beach path (I’ve got to balance out those donuts!), sharpie pens, sticky notes, to-do lists, using happy faces and exclamation points in emails (because I’m just so darn excited) and wandering aimlessly in Indigo. You too? High five!”

How do you react when things don’t go EXACTLY as planned?

Expect this with weddings! We’re all about working closely on all details leading up to your day; however, we also are clear in our communication in setting expectations around having things go exactly as planned.

Are there times when weddings seem to go flawlessly? Absolutely! However, there are many weddings where little things happen - dinner is a few minutes late, a speaker gets nervous and postpones their speech to a later time, the flower girl gets overwhelmed and decides to not walk down the aisle. Whatever happens, let it be!

Your day will be absolutely amazing if you let it!
