#TBT to our 2022 In the Soil Arts Festival! 📹 Fourgrounds Media Inc.
In June 2022, Suitcase in Point Multi-Arts Company launched the 14th annual In the Soil Arts Festival. In the spirit of planning for the unknown, Suitcase in Point designed a festival program that was delivered throughout the entire summer and began with a robust launch weekend in downtown St. Catharines.
From an unstoppable program of live music featuring Great Lake Swimmers, Radio Radio, Witch Prophet, Strong Water Singers, The Ferns and more, to an eclectic variety of site-specific experiences like Trophy's immersive listening party "Remixed", @APED Studio’s "Immanuel", an enveloping post-human VR experience, and Sean Aileen McClelland and Iain Ellis’ "Soft Animals" sonic duet in the courtyard of the Old Courthouse that weaved together stunning vocals, guitar and the poetry of Mary Oliver. For those lucky enough to catch Hercinia Arts Collective’s "Peep", a marvellous program of performances were eaten up from within the confines of an 8’x8’ box.
We were also thrilled to partner with Blackowned905 and James St. Market (Ruby Red Beautiful & Cozy Bones) on our Vendor Bender launch weekend market!
Our festival launch weekend was nothing short of bombastic and kicked us off into a summer series of new theatre, including Roselyn KS’s "Sister Warriors" at Oddfellows Hall, Re:Current Theatre "New Societies" at Robertson Theatre and Red Beti Theatre's "Blackberry" at Merritt Island park in Welland. The series also included a photography exhibit by Juliana D'Intino ("Connecting Rods" at an empty building on James Street) and a special live-streamed performance by JFM ("River Rider", streamed from the banks of the Welland River).
A huge thank you to the fantastic roster of volunteers who came out to help us deliver our ambitious festival. Thank you to Wabanan Anangokwe for your thoughtful sensitivity training and to our amazing sponsors: Ontario Power Generation, Marilyn I. Walker Sch

Mark your calendars for Julianna D'Intino's "Connecting Rods", on display at 401 St. Paul Street from July 22–24 as part of our Summer Series. Free admission // suitable for all ages.
The artist, Julianna D’Intino, has been documenting the slow demolition of 285 Ontario Street since 2015. The former factory was a driving force of the Niagara economy for over 100 years. It now sits a shell – stuck in limbo between its past and its future.
Through images, archival materials, interviews, and reflections, the artist explores the history of and familial connections to the location, and how the changing uses of the site have reverberated in the community.

About “Sister Warriors”:
When young Rhania is bride-napped, Eyaliya gives up everything to rescue her. Sister Warriors is about sisterhood and crisis of faith. Bride-napping is the practice of abducting and forcing girls into marriage. Eyaliya’s ambition to live in a monastic community is derailed when Rhania is abducted. To rescue her, Eyaliya has to face her doubts about God and decide what human life is worth. Dharini, the sister of Rhania’s abductor, tries to help Rhania to cope. Even the abductor husband Angelo is doing what he thinks is his duty to uphold his family legacy. In a world where sex crimes are tradition, everyone is bound by the system, even those who seem to hold power.
Warnings: Not appropriate for children. May trigger audience members with descriptions of sexual assault, violence & suicide. A psychotherapist will be on hand, should any individual require help.
