“All little kids like art and nature. I’ve never met a little kid who doesn’t like art and nature. But most normal human beings grow up around the age of 12 and go on to more grown up things. I just have not grown up yet.” ~ Robert Bateman

What an uproarious evening last night at “Juliet: A Revenge Comedy” from Vancouver’s Monster Theatre. Laughter took the roof off with this clever take on Juliet’s refusal to die and realizing she can change the narrative, she brings other famous heroines destined to die on a journey to escape the boundaries of Shakespeare’s plays and the author himself. Local references made their way into the dialogue and really connected with the local audience. The production said it was one of the best audiences it had experienced and that drove the energy of the actors themselves. What a hoot!

Like so many other non-profits across the country and here at home, ArtSpring is experiencing the serious impact of the Canada Post strike. As the Globe & Mail recently published, holiday giving is down as much as 50% due to mail interruption. With nearly 40% of our annual budget reliant on donations, we urgently hope you will consider giving this year through one of the following ways:

1. By credit card online or by phone
2. Through Canada Helps (one-off or monthly)
3. By secure e-transfer ([email protected])
4. By dropping off a cheque by December 20

Donations received by December 31 of $20 or more will receive a 2024 tax receipt. Should you find it necessary to mail your cheque, as long as it is dated 2024, it can be processed when service resumes.

For those who have already donated, we express our deepest gratitude. If you haven't yet, but have ever been to a concert, performance, production, film screening, school show, workshop, lecture, or exhibition at ArtSpring that made an impression on you -- we encourage you to support us at any level you can.

This 25th Anniversary year has been a true celebration of arts and and community — past, present, and future. Your contributions make a direct and immediate impact within our unique community, making it possible (and accessible) to engage, connect, and inspire as only the transformational power of the arts can do.

Salt Spring Film Festival presents US, OUR PETS AND THE WAR | Wed Dec 11 | $ 14 | TICKETS NOW ON SALE.

Amidst the worst of circumstances, courageous Ukrainians are risking their lives under Russian bombardment to rescue animals left behind by those forced to flee.

From dogs & cats miraculously surviving in demolished buildings & abandoned shelters, to exotic wildlife helplessly stranded in the nation's zoos, unbelievable rescue efforts are underway to extract animals from the war zone and bring them to safety.

Some of the rescued animals unexpectedly become online celebrities, such as Patron the Jack Russell terrier, who was awarded the Order of Courage by President Zelenskyy for his work locating unexploded landmines.

Inspiring the very best of the human spirit in the face of mortal danger, ordinary people do extraordinary things in this astonishing celebration of our bond with animals, which won the Audience Choice Award at the Irish Film Institute’s Documentary Festival in September.

Co-presented by the Salt Spring “Friends of Ukraine” Committee & the Salt Spring BCSPCA.

TUE DEC 10 7:30pm | $5 Youth, $35 Adult, $15 Angel Tickets NOW AVAILABLE upon request.

Monster Theatre's "Juliet, A Revenge Comedy" asks the question – what if Shakespeare’s Juliet didn’t die? In this popular and award-winning show, we find Juliet stuck in an endless loop of turning a dagger on herself. But what if Juliet breaks out of her tragedy in search of a reason for her tragic demise? On the way, she recruits a team of Shakespeare’s most famous female characters to find out why they’ve been forced to die. Can they alter their fate or are they doomed to play out the same tragic tales for the rest of eternity?

Carly Pokoradi reprises her Jesse award-winning role playing over 20 characters including Lady Macbeth and Ophelia to bring this canon-bending comedy to life once more.

“...a delightful tale that’s equal parts feminist critique, Renaissance romp, and bravura acting not to be missed.” (NOW Toronto)

Why are the arts relevant? The arts may be the last bastion of providing a safe space to have a difference of opinion. To have different responses or feelings without judgement. To be engaged, entertained, or enlightened. To stand next to your neighbour and 100% disagree over what you are experiencing, yet walk away as friends. The ultimate act of freedom of speech and expression.

The arts may be the biggest community-builder we have as a resource, and we hope you join us in our ongoing mission to keep this venue alive, relevant, and accessible to all on Salt Spring.

Thank you for your support this year.

WED DEC 4 | 7:30pm | "Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story."

Presented by Salt Spring Film Festival, join us for this "Best of the Fests" screening. Once you hear Jackie Shane sing, you’ll never forget it. With an outsized stage presence that eclipsed even the greatest R&B artists, the Nashville-born transgender soul singer shattered barriers in Montreal & Toronto in the late 1960s and early ’70s with raw talent, courage and an unbreakable commitment to living as her authentic self.

Through dazzling state-of-the-art animation, never-before-heard recordings and an incredible soundtrack, the full scope of Jackie’s extraordinary life is revealed in this unforgettable portrait of a largely forgotten star miraculously brought back to life on the big screen.

Co-presented by Gulf Islands Community Radio and the Salt Spring Jazz & Blues Society.
