Gustin House

Gustin House Music and the arts! Annual concert series featuring international and local artists. Join us!

The activity of Gustin House is inspired by the brilliant piano teacher Dr. Lyell Gustin (1895-1988), who moved from Quebec to Saskatchewan at age 17, already an award winning pianist. In his Saskatoon studio, he mentored and inspired hundreds of young musicians during his 70-year career. Today, a non-profit charity based in his restored home/studio continues his ideals: Gustin/Trounce Heritage Co

mmittee Inc. presents musical and cultural events, gives piano scholarships, and also maintains Gustin House, a Provincial Heritage Property.

More comments have come in from our Andrew Haji & Helen Becqué recital:

“a singer of phenomenal talent . . . we sat near the front, could see both performers and their artistic interaction very clearly. Amazing recital, most enjoyable.”

“besides the actual performance, which left me speechless, I admired the shape of the program, the wonderful arc of a lighter beginning with operetta to the big dramatic opera ending, and the range of emotional ‘frankness’ in between!”

“the concert on the 26th was fantastic! Really beautiful music . . . many thanks to the Donor!"

“I’m a pianist who loves playing for singers. Helen was fantastic at the keyboard, sensitively playing to the text, emerging into richer volume when solo piano phrases came along, then gracefully sharing the limelight again with the singer. A very gifted collaborative pianist, performing with that marvellous tenor––what a thrilling evening!”

Thank you to everyone who attended the final
recital of our 20th season. Here’s what some people are saying about Andrew Haji and Helen Becqué’s performance….

“This was one of the best vocal recitals we have had in Saskatoon in many years. His tone control and projection were incredibile. And his abilty to adjust to the space was so intuitive……”

“ A titanic voice and an intensely demanding program…..”

“Helen Bequé’s collaboration provided the perfect balance and partnership”

“It was a fine recital-comedy, variety, artistry and exemplary singing and playing by both Andrew and Helen. Terrific examples of how a recital can be designed and presented for those that attended. Thank you to the Lyell Gustin Recital Series for bringing in such high standards to Saskatoon, and indeed, to Saskatchewan!“…..

Very happy for you!

It's RELEASE DAY! You can now hear MAIER FRANCK SCHUMANN worldwide:
https://orcd.co/duoconcertante

This is a really meaningful recording for Duo Concertante. The Franck and Schumann have lived alongside us and given us a deeper understanding of ourselves for decades as artists and life partners, and we think they pair beautifully with the more recently discovered and thrilling romantic masterpiece by Amanda Maier.

We want to thank the many people involved in making it possible, starting first with Records - what a joy it has been to work with this top-notch team. Thank you to the folks at church for the beautiful venue in Edinburgh. ArlanVriens, a former student and all-around brilliant guy, wrote the excellent liner notes. Funding from Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council and University, Newfoundland and Labrador made it all possible. A final huge thanks to all our friends and supporters for listening and coming on this journey with us!
