We have a very exciting announcement! Hillsdale Flower Farm workshops are now open for registration!! We’ve been asked a lot if we’re doing Alberta Open Farm Days and while we really wanted to, the dates just didn’t work for us. So instead we’ve opened up 6 workshops for you to come and enjoy our little slice of paradise. Each session will include a welcome beverage, farm tour with plant education, a hands-on, guided flower arranging lesson, and a chance to shop from our farm including vegetables, herbs and eggs. I’m a sucker for poppies, their blooms are irresistible. But they are finicky as a cut flower. Instead we let them go to seed, to share our love of poppies with you, and to use the dried pods in arrangements.

Waking up the dahlias today. 🙌🏼

We clean them up, check em over and divide where we can. Every “eye” that’s showing signs of life is so exciting! There’s lots that are looking great, a few that very clearly didn’t make the winter and a whole bunch of, “I dunno”’s. I’m not giving up on them easily though because last year we ended up with a few dahlias growing in the compost pile 🤷🏼‍♀️. Still learning!

Today is my birthday! And of course every dream gift is a trailer of the best soil from my fav nursery! It’s basically the official opening of the ‘23 growing season and I’m so excited to get dirty.

Happy first day of spring! If you’re like me, today makes you itchy. (Snow mould may also be contributing). I get all kinds of antsy to get planting and starting my seeds. Then I remember where I live and for the vase majority of what we grow at our place it’s too early to start. Instead I will scratch the itch by planning out our gardens. Here’s the plan on our raised hoop beds which I’m dedicating to vegetables this year. With the cost of groceries ⬆️ I’m planning on growing more to feed our family.
Bed A will be shelling peas, we’ve grown Green Arrow for years and they are fantastic! Since these beds have hoops that we can close, we’re able to sow the peas quite early and then that bed will be turned in to a lettuce, arugula and nasturtium wonderland.

Bed B I’m doing Kale, Broccoli and Cabbage in together so I can cover the bed with a floating row cover or cabbage moth net. Last year they were in Bed C, it’s important to move cabbage and brassica family to different soil each year to mitigate pest problems.

Bed C will be snap peas in the back row (so daisy dog can’t reach them 🐕), Artist Gherkin Cucumbers (another tried and true seed from West Coast that are perfect for pickling) and yellowfin zucchini. I always like growing yellow squash because they’re easier to find 👀. And then we’re trying a new variety of squash with tromboncino which will grow along a hoop trellis from bed C to bed D.

Bed D will have Luffa squash growing on the other side of the hoop trellis from bed c. And then I’m alternating tricolour beans and touchstone gold beets. The beets are another family favorite because they are sweet and delicious and don’t scare my kids like red beets do. Not sure how they’re going to do together in that bed but my thought is as soon as the beans are done I can pull them and give the beets more sun. Again because we can close the hoops I’m hoping to give the beans a head start for a quicker maturity.

Thursday and Friday nights are “premier prep” days at our house. If you’re a volleyball person you know what I’m talking about. Two kids in club volleyball = premier tournaments every other weekend. Tomorrow half of the family heads to red deer for a tournament so rice bowls are getting pumped out of our kitchen. Happy to be adding some of micro greens from our kitchen garden to the bowls for some vitamin boosts. Need some vitamin boosts of your own? We’re stocked on micro greens at for you. The other half of us will see you there!
