Site Walkthrough (Part 4)
Here is the final part of the Cochrane Centre site video tour! This final video takes us up to the third floor of the Annex building.
The Annex building was initially designed as a Sunday school with a capacity of 300 children, and over the years the space was repurposed and used by various other groups. Now, the entire floor has been remodelled into ten supportive housing units.
Walking up the stairs we pass by the brand new elevator shaft on the right, and step into what will soon be a common reading area which overlooks Bannerman Street. Next, we step into one of the apartments; each will have their own bathroom, kitchen and living area along with 14ft ceilings and beautiful large windows facing the harbour or Government House gardens.
At the end of the hall is a large unfinished room which was fornerly the location of the choir room and adjoining storage closet. This is the future location of one larger fully accessible apartment as well as a shared laundry room.
As we walk back down the hallway, it is amazing to realize that much of this floor sits on the new lowered ceiling of the former gymnasium below. We return to the third floor residents' common area, and take one last look out the window onto Bannerman street to conclude the tour.
Thank you for watching!
Site Walkthrough (Part 3)
Here is Part 3! This video shows the true scale of work being done in the Annex building.
First we see that the former organists office has been cleared out. This room and two smaller adjacent rooms are being made into washrooms. The old nursery has been remodeled into a meeting room, which will also double as a rehearsal/green room for the performance centre.
The old gymnasium and lounge areas will soon be a large multipurpose space perfect for community meals and events, corporate functions, private events, receptions, rehearsals, performance, and much more. Thanks to the brand new fully-equipped commercial kitchen being installed, the space can also be used for professionally catered events, dinner theatre, etc.
In the old gymnasium the ceiling went up two floors, but the ceilings are only 14ft high now. That's because the space above was needed for the amazing transormation of the third floor. Check back tomorrow to see it in Part 4!
Site Walkthrough (Part 2)
Here is Part 2 of our video tour!
In this video we visit the first floor of the Annex building. This floor, which was previously occupied by a daycare for 40 years, is now completely empty while we finalize arrangements with a new occupant. We take a walk through the old mechanical and furnace rooms which have now been upgraded with new all new electrical and plumbing.
After that, we take a look at the new elevator shaft and the beginnings of the new ramp being installed at the Stewart Ave entrance. These improvements will make all three floors of the Annex building fully accessible.
Be sure to check back tomorrow afternoon for Part 3!
Site Walkthrough (Part 1)
Curious about what's going on inside the doors of Cochrane Centre? Here is the first of four "site walkthrough" videos for we made for our first AGM in October 2016.
In this video we take a brief walk through the Performance Centre and into the main stairwell. The accessible lift has been enclosed for protection from the heavy construction above. Up one floor, we take a look at the current state of the two offices and see that the old staircase to the 3rd floor has been removed entirely.
Part two coming soon, stay tuned!
